Bass trembled into my chest; my whole body beating like a heart. The white 1991 Toyota Corolla bounced with the beat, and so did we. The red traffic light glared into our eyes, and we rolled to a stop. My sister flicked the radio station to a traffic report, so she could decide which route to take home.
The usual chatter of road blockages and car accidents were cut off by a young woman anchor, who reported, “The body of Melissa Callaway, missing since February 7th, has been located. Autopsies have revealed her kidnapper also raped her several times before bludgeoning her with a blunt object. Full story at 8 on channel 4.”
I hurriedly lunged to the front and turned off the radio. We sat in a sullen silence for a few moments, too horror struck by the news to react. Melissa was our neighbor; my brother, sister and I took turns babysitting for her parents. I grew enraged.
“She was only six fucking years old. Six fucking years! Who the fuck would do something like that to such an innocent little girl?” I screamed in spite, “She was someone’s daughter!” With the last syllable, I slammed my clenched fists onto the seat next to me, and tears of anger welled in my eyes.
