I. The Beginning. Not Just Another Friday Night With The Guys.
It is difficult to determine where it all began. For me and my crew, the trouble started out at Freemont Lake. At first we assumed that it was an isolated event involving our little group and no one else. We now know that it was happening all over the country at such a rate that there is no way to know where it really began. Experts have formed innumerous panels and committees trying to get to the bottom of things but so far, there has been no consensus.
Some believe the plague started in the cities and spread outward as people fled into the country to escape it, but there is also evidence to suggest the opposite. The only thing people can agree on is that it spread quickly. No one can pinpoint Ground Zero and opinions are varied. Likewise, there are a multitude of conflicting explanations as to what caused the outbreak in the first place. Conspiracies abound and there is no shortage of “official” explanations.
Some say that radiation from nuclear power plants is the culprit. A handful of radicals insist that it must be secret government experiments gone awry. Others point to chemicals in the water, toxic run-off from factories that has been polluting us for years. There are even those who claim that it is divine judgment. Bowls of God’s wrath being poured out upon a wicked and perverse generation. Revelation and Armageddon…Seven Seal and the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse…that sort of thing. I really do not have a clue how or why it happened but I do know that it changed everything. For all of us, Friday, October the thirteenth, 1989 is a day we will never forget.
