Author bio:

This year, I'm writing what works for me. And it's not a novel really - it's more like many many loosely connected words.

In years past I've fallen on many crutches - long and self-centered dream sequences, movie plots, books that my characters suddenly start reading, random events that don't really fit in with the overall story - just because I got bored with my story. I would look back at my page for another day and think: "Oh wow, I just don't feel like writing about these guys anymore."

And then would come the crazy dreams that didn't make any sense.

Not this year. This year I didn't have much time to plan, and while I think pantsing is an excellent way to get started, I have a hard time staying interested when I've begun by pantsing and made too many decisions too early on in the story. So this year, I'm doing something else.

Small stories - one for every day or every few days that are connected only by the experiences that the characters have in a mysterious fantasy dream-state.

NaNo challenges participants to break out of their comfort zone. To try something new. To try telling a story that matters to them. I'm taking that challenge a little differently. I see people's amazing work every day. Sometimes, when I ask them about it, they're sure to note that they were paid for their work. That's all well and good, but I want to do awesome things because they matter. Because they excite me. By the challenging myself to find the time it takes to do the work for NaNo, I'm hoping to create a space in my life that I can use for those things that excite and interest me.

To them, I say

Yes you stress that you're getting paid for what you did but I want to do stuff that matters. I know this little nano thing doesn't matter too much to too many people but it matters to me. And I'm hoping that it'll help me carve out a space in my crazy life to do those thing that really do matter to me. You're my inspiration. No matter how indirectly you got there. "
