Synopsis
Brother discovers that will of dead sister contains a bequest to someone he has never heard of. The novel charts his attempts to discover who that person is and the consequences of him finding out.
Excerpt
Amy soon finished with her previous client and Susan was shown into her office. Susan expressed satisfaction with the draft of the will and explained to Amy that if the person to whom she wished to bequeath certain items predeceased her, that was it, there was to be no entitlement for next-of-kin or heirs. Susan explained why. Amy was clearly surprised, but not shocked, Susan thought. For many years, there had been things Susan had to keep quiet about. She always tried not to lie to anyone. Her sins were mostly of omission not commission. Of course, many people would think her sins were of both omission and commission, but she did not feel she had harmed anyone by what she had done. In the case of her solicitor, Susan felt there was no reason not to be honest about the situation, and she had been.
