Synopsis
In the sun-drenched fantasy lands of Alkebulan, where magic is born in the blood, in jewels and in song, Sunbird is the fifth novel in the Quests of Alkebulan series.
Taraji Ardashir, an upper mid-level student of kenemic magics at the famed Mutabezi Earth academy, is set apart from most of her fellow studetns. Although the select few allowed entry in the school come from a mix of nearly every prominent clanHouse of the Leggba Triummverate, she is one of a very few who is also a D'uad-Imir, a descendant of one of the so-called outsider races of Alkebulan. These peoples once battled the native-born of the land in the service of a false god, compelled by sorcery and lies. Though generations have passed, and the gods themselves have shown forgiveness, for some, old hates are very hard to kill.
Even now, generations later, there are still strictures and prejudices against her people and as a result Taraji, now a young woman in her second decan, has come to believe that only knowledge and power will gain any measure of true freedom and acceptance in her world.
Tricked into a forbidden magical Challenge by a jealous would-be rival, Taraji is forced in an exile through no fault of her own. Apprenticed to a Set of earthsingers who are among many other things, artifact-hunters; neither are they at all what she expected. Under their unorthodox tutelage, she learns to explore and expand her own true kenemic potentials and finds herself caught up in sorcerous conspiracies and a race against time to stop an old evil from being reborn.
