Synopsis
This is the third book in the Onycan trilogy. It focuses on Marigold, a young refugee who has been unexpectedly thrust into the position of a queen at the end of Book 2. She is given the task of settling a nation in upheaval after it survived attacks by both a foreign army and a home-grown rebel faction. To make her job more difficult, there are rumors of dangerous supernatural forces awakening throughout the nation, and a class of priestesses is vying for a share of the power to rule the country. In the middle of this turmoil, Marigold falls in love with a general of the enemy's army, and both are condemned for this act. To save the general from certain execution, she puts herself at the mercy of the priestesses, and ends up paying a heavy price. It is a race against time for Marigold to build allies with the surrounding nations and various people (both human and non-human) within her land before she dies as a result of the bargain she made with the spirits. Her only ally is Princess Tiqa from Jula, a desert district that the majority of Onycans only know through legend and myth - and it is Jula that may hold the keys to Onyca's future.
