Under his scrutiny and in the face of his revelation, she had grown pale and returned to her chair.
‘Oh, they told me … they told me I should not come!’ This time her green eyes were tear-filled as they searched his face which remained stern, unfathomable. ‘I fear you may be the one person I must not speak with, to whom I must not disclose my identity.’
The girl buried her face in her hands and wept. As the candle guttered and the fire burned lower yet, he was in turns perplexed, amused and angered.
