No one saw it coming.
Even though we were expecting it – were counting on it – there was no warning, no chance to retaliate.
From inside the carriage I heard only the swish of loosed arrows, the grunts of the men struck, a few shouts brutally cut off.
The hiss of swiftly drawn swords and spat curses as more loosed arrows whistled through the air.
The thuds of bodies hitting the forest floor.
The wild whinnies of spooked horses, the stamp of their restless hooves, the screams of the dying few…
And then there were no more shouts, no more drawn weapons…only the ominous pounding of approaching feet.
