Synopsis

A SciFi Thriller with alien/human culture clashes, genetic engineering, artificial lifeforms + memory manipulation on a distant world where...there's always a Plan

Shayla didn't ask to be a Councillor. In fact, she doesn't even belong to this world. She only came here when the Seven Chiefs told her to, to go with Raif, into his world, to do whatever he said. Because they had a plan. The Seven Chiefs always had a plan, but she had plans of her own now, after 13 years here.

Raif had never intended for things to go this far. A few months, maybe a year, and he could send the little Phoenician girl home, back where she belonged. Her people's leaders, the Seven Chiefs, had gotten him started on this quest for answers about his own genetic history. Problem was, the further he'd dug into the mystery, the more questions he had. After producing a Designated Heir, he finds himself in competition with his own progenitor for control of his future. But nothing is as it seems and no plan survives first contact with the enemy. Ask not Who is the enemy and what is their Plan? If you're smart, you'll ask Whose Plan is this anyway?

Baldwin hooks you into her world so deeply and completely, you'll wonder if you've been Adjusted yourself! You'll think about this book even when you're not reading it. You'll wonder if that was the Plan all along. More of a mystery than a thriller, you'll still find yourself on the edge of your seat, unable to stop yourself from turning the next page--and dreading what happens next. The only bad thing to say about this book is that it ends! You'll hardly be able to wait for the next book in the series to come out!

Excerpt

Conditioned Response is actually the second book in the internal chronology of the series. The first book hasn't even been written yet. The other 4 books were written during the period 1986-1990, and were solicited, submitted and reviewed by an editor then at Del Rey Books. He read and commented on all 4 books and was quite enthusiastic about them but for one thing. His one big concern, preventing him from buying them at that time, was that the series books were too inter-dependent. I've been editing Conditioned Response since July of 2011 and used Nanowrimo 2011 to write new material elminating some of the inter-dependencies. I also changed the setting to an off-Earth location, thus November was spent doing world-building of the new planet where humans first encountered Phoenicians...or is it? :)

Edits continue but the expected release date for the eBook of Conditioned Response is December 31, 2011. A paperback version will follow approximately 3 months later. I may have to delay the e-release past New Year's Eve if the final edits and reviews by selected readers don't progress as quickly as I'd like (given the Christmas holiday season, most people are booked until after New Year's)
