Excerpt
I'd dreamed my whole life of being a superhero. Like a lot of kids, it started from watching the saturday cartoons about caped crusaders, it was fueled by all the news reports about the Order and the Alliance and the Amazing Eleven, and only encouraged by the comics I bought with my allowance. Unlike a lot of kids, I never grew out of it. I worked my ass off to stay in the best shape possible from the age of ten on. I took ballet, gymnastics, kickboxing, tae kwon do, aikido, krav maga, yoga, and tai chi. I studied the fighting styles of my favorite vigilantes, found videos of their fights and watched over and over. I read every book on heroes I could find, sitting in the library and reading for six hours at a time because half of them were reference only. I went to hero camp the summer I was eleven, but I quickly decided it was bullshit because 1) there was a very strict no fighting rule, and 2) they gave us these really bad store brand oreo knockoffs at snacktime.
