I made the decision in 2010 to get serious about my fiction writing and NaNoWriMo helped me complete my very first novel. I'm halfway done with the 3rd draft of that first novel, and also have the sequel's first draft under my belt from NaNoWriMo 2011. This year my NaNo novel is a break from my norm of writing things with a fantasy/supernatural/magical bent by being a YA Contemporary.
