Day 13 Word Count Goal : 21,671

Today’s Word Challenge : Pancake
Noun: a thin, flat cake of batter fried on both sides on a griddle or in a frying pan; griddlecake or flapjack.
Verb: (of an airplane or the like) to drop flat to the ground after leveling off a few feet above it

“Whether a character in your novel is full of choler, bile, phlegm, blood or plain old buffalo chips, the fire of life is in there, too, as long as that character lives.” —James Alexander Thom

Day 10 Word Count Goal : 16,670

Today’s Word Challenge : Kraken
Noun: a legendary sea monster causing large whirlpools off the coast of Norway.

“We’re past the age of heroes and hero kings. … Most of our lives are basically mundane and dull, and it’s up to the writer to find ways to make them interesting.” — John Updike, WD

Day 11 Word Count Goal : 18,337

Today’s Word Challenge : Ruminate
Verb: to chew again or over and over
Verb: to meditate on; ponder

“There are no laws for the novel. There never have been, nor can there ever be.” — Doris Lessing

Day 7 Word Count Goal : 11,669

Today’s Word Challenge : tesseract
Noun : the generalization of a cube to four dimensions.

“Making people believe the unbelievable is no trick; it’s work. … Belief and reader absorption come in the details: An overturned tricycle in the gutter of an abandoned neighborhood can stand for everything.” — Stephen King, WD

Day 5 Word Count Goal : 8,335

Today’s Word Challenge : Ashura
Noun : the tenth of the month of Muharram, an important fast day for Sunni Muslims.

“The greatest part of a writer’s time is spent in reading, in order to write; a man will turn over half a library to make one book.” — Samuel Johnson

Day 3 Word Count Goal : 5,001

Today’s Word Challenge : Yett
Noun: Iron lattice gate at a castle entry (origin Scottish)

“Keep a small can of WD-40 on your desk—away from any open flames—to remind yourself that if you don’t write daily, you will get rusty.” — George Singleton

Don’t let Saturday get in the way of your writing…. let writing get in the way of your Saturday, okay Rough Writers?

Day 2 Word Count Goal : 3,334

Today’s Word Challenge : Whirlwind
Noun: any of several relatively small masses of air rotating rapidly around a more or less vertical axis and advancing simultaneously over land or sea, as a dust devil, tornado, or waterspout.

“The difference between the almost right word and the right word is … the difference between the lightning bug and the lightning.” — Mark Twain

We are not going for lightning today folks. Having a hard time thinking of the right word to use and losing valuable seconds? Use “whirlwind” instead and come back to in on December 1st.

Day 1 Word Count Goal : 1,667

Today’s Word Challenge : Delicate
Adjective: Very fine in texture or structure; of intricate workmanship or quality.
Noun: A delicate fabric or garment made of such fabric

“You don’t actually have to write anything until you’ve thought it out. This is an enormous relief, and you can sit there searching for the point at which the story becomes a toboggan and starts to slide.” — Marie de Nervaud, WD

This is true.... except during NaNo! Sitting there is going to mean you have 0 words by the end of the day.... so put your fingers to they keyboard and type out whatever is going through your head, right now! Then, place some quotation marks around it, followed by the phrase "s/he thought to herself why the real story appeared in its glory. For lack of time s/he left the unedited, incoherent mess and continued on with the new plot."
