As any rabid fan *cough me cough* knows, garth Nix loves somewhere in north Sydney. i was wondering if anyone thinks that it would be a realistic hope to see him appear for the Sydney Kick-Off/TGIO party/ies?

Not that I'm really hanging out for it, but it would be super amazing. After all, if he's in Sydney on those days -- and we had contact details -- we could invite him down.

I've never met Garth or read any of his books, but a few months ago I discovered that we share something in common - we both graduated from the University of Canberra with a Bachelor of Arts (Professional Writing) degree. Garth was at CU from 1984-1986, while I was there from 1989-1991.

The big difference between us, of course, is that Garth went on on to a hugely successful literary career, whereas mine has yet to begin.

Contact details? Hmm - this might help ->

On his OzEmail page (http://members.ozemail.com.au/~garthnix/) he lists the following ways to get in touch with him, although particularly in regards to postcard requests. Still, he does say he personally reads all communications, so who knows?

Okay, who wants to help me construct an invite (try email first? I'll send it)? We can send it when we figure out where we're having it.

We could also invite him to become the official ambassador of Sydney NaNoers to the rest of the world! We have a local pep-talker!

*bounces like an idiot*

Okay.

Dear Garth Nix.

Thank you so much for deciding to Pep-talk for the NaNoWriMo community. Most of us are very excited to know we'll find a letter from you in out inboxes during November!

The reason for this email is that a group of the Garth fans at the Sydney region of NaNoWriMo thought it would be a fun, exciting and fan-girl thing to have you come to out Kick Off party on October 28th (that's a Saturday) and/or the Thank God It's Over Party in early December. A large group of us thought this was a very good idea and we all wish to see you there!

Thanks Garth,

Any one got anything to add?

I've only ever read the first book from 'The Seventh Tower' series...

I do own a copy of Sabriel though, I just haven't read it.

You should. I love it. Full of Zombies (with different names and lore surrounding, of course, but the elment is the same). Silly me only bought Sabriel. I had to go out and buy the other two a week later after I drove my parents mad.

I do that well when I'm talking about books. July 20th 2007 was a weird day. I was locked in my room for the day because I was hyper at the launch of HP 7 the next day...

Anyway, I thought of a new paragraph for the letter (you can all add to it if you want!)

We would also wish to invite you to be our World-Wide NaNo Ambassador - The first, I would think. We came up with the idea when we realised that we had a pep-talker living in our own backyard. It would probably just mean a lot of gloating on Sydney's part, but [you Sydneyers can add to that if you want.]

Yeah, awkward paragraph. Oops.

Hey guys,

this is a great idea, however the kickoff is on a Sunday, rather than a Saturday, probably at 1pm and probably at Kino's if I can swing it again. But hey, we were wonderful last time, how could they not want us back, eh? ;)

Oh btw, we'd best check and make sure that there arn't any other writers that have adopted any other chapters before we go saying he's the first. Could end up a little embarising later if we don't.

For some reason I thought he was a musician and I was going to make Karl Urban jokes. :(

Ah, thanks for fixing that, ML! That would definately be embarrassing! Anyone want to volunteer to look around? Or should we just place 'one of' in front of the word 'first'? I'm lazy, so you lot can pick.

Edited letter, with corrections:

Dear Garth Nix.

The reason for this email is that a group of the Garth fans at the Sydney region of NaNoWriMo thought it would be a fun, exciting and fan-girl thing to have you come to out Kick Off party on October 28th (that's a Sunday) at [Kikos], and/or the Thank God It's Over Party in early December. A large group of us thought this was a very good idea and we all wish to see you there!

We would also wish to invite you to be our World-Wide NaNo Ambassador - The first, I would think. We came up with the idea when we realised that we had a pep-talker living in our own backyard. It would probably just mean a lot of gloating on Sydney's part, but we wanted to ask you in case anyway. Someone could make you an icon or something to stick on your site ot wherever. Yes, some of us do visit your UK site. *raises hand guiltily*

If anyone wants their name on the bottom of the letter, can you say so please? I'm going to send it on the 15th (Monday), as I think we now have the place for our KO party. If not, can someone tell me please?

Ladies and Gents, I sent the email off this morning, after some very annoying setbacks. Hopefully we'll hear from him soon!
