I'm planning to kill a character by gasing her to death, using nail polish remover. As far as I've understood it's far from healthy to breathe in the aceton in the nail polish remover, and that it also goes to gas form at quite low temperatures.

The character is getting locked in a small bathroom (about 3 square metres), and the nail polish remover will be in the bath tub. The window will be locked, and the ventilation is not exactly the best. Is normal room temperature enough? And how much nail polish remover is needed? It's important the character doesn't get a lot of time to call for help.

And how will the whole dieing procedure be? Will she pass out first? Is it painful? What signs of this is it on the body? What will happen when you actually open the door and let out the gas?

And, what would be the best way for the killer to do this? Should he first make her unconsious and drag her in to the bathroom before he fills the bath tub with the nailpolish remover, or should he prepare the gas chamber before? What consequenses will this have on his body? Can you trace him in any easy way?

And I'm only going to murder my character using this method, not a real, living, breathing, nonfictional person.

Sadly, I don't think nail polish remover is the best choice for gassing someone. It would take a massive volume of remover to generate the kind of gas concentration needed to asphyxiate someone in a small room. By the time enough of it evaporated into the air, some of it would have escaped through the walls and cracks around the windows & doors.

Another way (if you are determined to stick with the gas chamber) would be to just put a big canister or two of compressed gas in the bathroom with them, open the nozzle, and wait awhile. Compressed gas isn't hard to obtain. It might not even have to be a noxious gas- compressed nitrogen, helium, or carbon dioxide are all odor-free (compared to acetone, anyway). If the concentration of oxygen around the victim is low enough, they would lose consciousness (basically drift asleep), and then die fairly peacefully. There wouldn't be a lot of pain, since they would be unconscious.

Once the victim is dead, the killer could open the doors and windows, let the gas dissipate, remove the canister, and flee. If it wasn't a deadly gas, they could breathe it for a bit without hurting themselves.

Note, I have no idea how much exactly how much gas would be required for this, and it definitely isn't an efficient way to kill someone (not compared to a plain old gunshot or stabbing). Still, it probably wouldn't be detected in an autopsy, especially if the victim was drunk/drugged/had a history of heart problems, or otherwise might be expected to drop dead suddenly or asphyxiate accidentally.

yeah, nail polish would be hard to kill someone with.

i read this memoir of an abuse child (david pletzer or or something). his mother would lock him in the bathroom with cleaning products... bleach and mopping liquid and stuff like that. it didn't kill him because he kept a wet towel around his face... but i'd imagine it's be pretty deadly.

why don't you just gas them with a modified car? carbon monoxideing people like that is popular and easy!

Do able but you would need an upwards of 10 hours. And that would be if the bathtub was full. Best to have a chemical that ranks a 2 or 3 of the health portion of the NFPA 704 or fire diamond. what you also need to think of is a bathroom is a poor choice, manly because they could unplug the tub. and flushing the toilet would prolong life. A closet with a bucket of the chemical on the top shelf would be better. and the edges of the door on the out side would need to be duck taped for maximum effect. A good chemical would be liquid drain cleaner containing sodium hypochlorite (bleach), sodium hydroxide (lye), or potassium hydroxide with concentrations up to 40% their chemical write up is http://www.ilo.org/public/english/protection/safework/cis/products/icsc/...

I would also jack the heat up makes it go faster. as in turn up the heat outside of the room. 4 hours at the very most until they pass out another 2 or so until they die. they're lungs will burn a lot this stuff is corrosive so when they are found their throat and lungs will be partially melted red goo depending on how long they are in there. I would go to a store and figure out which brand has the highest concentration of each chemical for most effectiveness. If there is anything else I forgot than message me.

Chlorine bleach and ammonia is the way to gas someone quickly - mix the two together and you get chlorine gas.

I'd knock them out and then toss the chemicals into the tub (which has the stopper up) and leave.

Good luck killing off those characters!

Now, a closet sounds even better. I honnestly hadn't thought about those things like unplugging the bathtub. And a closet is even easier to lock someone in to.

Thanks for links and suggestions on other chemicals. I will have a look at it.

Hm, tempting tempting, but if they have a car they might escape, and that's bad.
