I had a story
I had characters
I had places, traditions, cultures, themes, landscapes, religions...
...and then a new character popped into my head demanding to be written about and he refused to fit in. The selfish git wants a story of his own. And I sort of want to give it to him.
What should I do!? Is anyone else having this problem?

It's happened to me -- granted, they were characters from an idea I'd had five years before, but they nevertheless hijacked last year's novel. Good thing, too, because I had no desire to continue the story I'd started with.
You have a month to decide which of the two you want to do... or if you want to do both. It's possible to do two (or more) separate novels or you can find a way to combine them.

One of my best friends has done NaNo a few times. The first (or was it only? I can't remember) time she won, she had everything ready to go and at 11:59pm October 31 a whole new idea popped into her head and she went with it.
So sometimes it works. :)

Go for it what's the worst that can happen, you just go back to the other plot. If you don't you've got a plot to work on sometime after NaNo.
