Hope we have a good group again this year. looking forward to seeing old faces--and some new ones too!
We will have our first write-in on Saturday November 3, 2007 at 6 pm at the Borders Cafe. Hope to see everyone there! I will make a regional announcement later this week.
Any questions? E-mail me at phenila@gmail.com. Please put NaNo in the subject.
Yes, I'm ready and rarin' to go. Good to see everyone rallying around again! I'm going to win this year - I can feel it! I'm going to try to get my hands on an AlphaSmart this year, since I'll be traveling for a few days right at the start of November. I think that will make all the difference for me. I was going to order one this month, but had to pay vet bills instead (the dog is fine now, my checkbook isn't). But I'm seriously considering ordering one right away first thing in November...
I'm super-excited about my novel this year - a romantic suspense novel tenatively titled "The Chameleon". I've got characters, plot, intrigue, mayhem, and enough unknown occurances that it shouldn't be too hard to keep myself interested in the whole works. I've also got a lot less going on, having gotten rid of my "second job", which will leave me more time to write.
My only problem now is trying not to plan *too much*. I've purposefully kept myself from outlining just yet...I'll wait until the last few days before we start to do that. ;-)
i tried and failed miserably last year, hopefully i will do better this year. so hi, everybody, i'm really looking forward to making it to 50k this year! i am incredibly busy with school but i am determined. good luck all.
How many of you would like to do a meet and greet on October 27??
it would be at 6 pm at Borders Cafe.
Also I would like to let all of you know that I was interviewed for the Boseman -based magazine Tributary. That was kind of fun. Ray (the interviewer) said he would give me a link so that we could see it online. I have no idea what i actually said in the interview :)
Can't make it on the 27th. Saturdays aren't really good for me, so I don't know how many times I'll be able to get together with everyone. I'll still be writing, though.
I should be able to make it on the 27th...will have to check closer to the date, but as of now it sounds good (I'll put it on the calendar). I probably won't attend the write-ins (I don't write well with people/activity around), but it would be fun to say "hi" and connect with everyone to get started...
And I'm pleased to have discovered that my pda will work with a wireless folding keyboard, so I'll be getting one of those, and doing the majority of my noveling on my Palm Z22 this year. Much cheaper than an AlphaSmart, and every bit as portable. I'm glad to have figured that out now - eases my mind about our trip. :-)
Edited to say: Congrats on the interview, Kay! :-)
Welcome to NaNo, Bubblechaser...you'll be really surprised at what happens once you start writing (pleasantly so). My first year I didn't even have a plot, and things just sort of took off running when I started writing (ironically, the last two years when I had plots and plans, I didn't win, but I'm determined this year). At the very least, you'll have fun trying! :-)
Kay, I can definately make it the 27th, so just let me know if you decide definatively to have a meet & greet then.
Wednesday evenings are good for me. I could maybe make it to some of the Saturday meetings, but I won't be able to stay long. I'm looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting any new nanos out there.
Ah, I second Wednesdays. I always work Saturday evenings, since I'm in class most of the week, but Wednesdays are one of my evenings off. I'd love to be able to come to one of them this year, but if they're all Saturdays I can't make it...
Greetings Billings Nanoers! Some of you I know from years past, but anyway, I'm Meggie! Normally I would be joining all you fine people in your novel writing endeavors, but not this year! No, I have not forsaken the way of the novelist, but I am 4184.65 miles away (I looked it up) in Edinburgh, Scotland. So for that reason I will most likely not be making the weekly write ins. Sorry. Anyway, I hope you have a magical time working on your novels. I am going to attempt to meet up with the nanoers here. I will pop my head in occassionally to see how things are going. Bye for now!
Kaidun, welcome! As long as you keep in mind that the point is to write (anything), you'll do fine. It's when we start thinking too much that trouble begins (or at least it does for me).
Kay, I'm definately ready to write. I even pinched some major pennies and got the keyboard for my Palm (to make sure it works, of course), which it does. Now I'm doing more character sketches, and though I was trying to wait until next week to finish outlining, I think I'm going to have to do some this week, because I don't want to forget the things coming to mind now! Awful, I know...
I WAS until I found a huge flaw in my plot. I am currently re-working the beginning of my novel to reflect the the very necessary change.
But the good news is that the RESTof the plotline doesn't need to be changed. maybe i can start writing from the middle. Ahh, the life of a writer.
AND I am a person who likes her schedule to stay the same. There are big changes at work and now I work mornings. Ya know, that time of day that I like to sit in a coffeeshop and write?? I challenged myself to do five thousand words a day. Now i have to figure out how to do that in the late afternoons.
Sorry to hear about your plot derailment. I'm sure you'll get back on track soon (not that it matters - you could always just grab some dares to plug the holes/cover the flaws until November is over...).
5000 words per day? Wow. I totally understand about schedules and liking a certain routine, so I'm sure it will be rather tough on you to switch on the muse in the afternoons instead. Most of my writing will be done in the evenings, but I'm a night person, so that's okay (and it won't get pushed aside on busy days at work, since I won't be writing at work much this year).
Sounds like you need a reward system for meeting your daily goals, eh? ;-)
Ummm... is it okay to not have an idea yet? I've read the posts and it seems a lot of you have done prep work. Frankly, I don't even have my plans narrowed down to a genre yet. Also, how long do the write ins usually last? I teach an EMT class in Red Lodge every Saturday until 6pm, but I would really like to participate and meet some other nano's this year.
All evidence to the contrary, my first year, I started with absolutely nothing - no plot, no characters, not even an idea in my head. And ironically, it's the only year I've "won" so far (2004). I see you joined in 2006, so you've been through this at least once before as well...if you can keep yourself from planning and plotting, all the better, I think, if that's what works for you. Honestly, that would probably work better for me too, but I get so excited about it that I just can't help jotting some notes and such down early. Something about October just gets me all excited and creative about writing in a way that I don't generally get otherwise - that anticipation of November really kicks me into gear, I think.
As Chris Baty, our fine founder says, "No plot, no problem", so I think you're going to do just fine, even if you don't have a clue when you sit down to write your first word on Nov. 1.
Currently I'm living in Springville, UT, which is just south of Provo (where Brigham Young University is) and about an hour south of Salt Lake City. My novel this time around will be the sequel of the one I was working on when I was in Billings. Hopefully I'll be more successful than last year:)
Tam,
the write-ins last as long as you want them to. some people only stay an hour. Some two hours. Depends on whether your muse is with you and the words are flowing. Someone will always be there until after 8 pm.

Hey folks! This is my first Nano, and I am so excited! I can't wait to do this, but I'm really busy and seriously hope I don't get weighed down.
I have plenty of plots prepared, but I can't decide which one to do. I don't think any of my stories ideas would make it to 50,000.
It's really great having other supportive people around to do this with!
