That's what mine's going to be. And I just wondered if anyone else out there is planning to do something similar. Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series has definitely proven that there's a good market for it, and I've always had leanings toward this style anyway, even when I was probably younger than a writer of erotica should be.

Anybody else?

Well, I'm trying to decide between doing a fantasy based on some children and a parallel world or a fantasy in which my main female character would be the child of a courtesan (inspired by Phedre - god I love the Kushiel books!) and who would struggle with the temptation to become a courtesan like her (absent) mother because she too has that sort of physical hunger and enjoyment. I like the second, but as I said, I'm caught between the two!

I have four different book ideas, all of them erotic fantasy. Now if I could only decide which one ...

Better than realizing that it's Halloween and you don't have a single stupid idea (been there, done that).

The first is inspired by the myth of Psyche and Cupid, and the book East, where Char 1 has to spend a certain amount of time in the bed of Char 2 to break the curse upon them.

The second is basically an erotic satire of the fantasy and fairy tale genres.

The third is about a guy who witnesses the murder of an intergalactic diplomat at the hands of a werewolf assassin and is put into the witness protection program where he falls in love with a pleasure slave.

And the fourth is about a guy with sexsomnia who has to be locked up at night so he won't get out and rape strangers in his sleep, who ends up falling for his jailor.

I may have to flip a coin ... Anyone have a four-sided coin?

Oh I looove Psyche and Cupid. One of my favourite myths. There's a version wherein the Cupid character is a bear - probably a Germanic story, I'm not sure, but that was how I first heard it. I prefer the Psyche/Cupid because it's prettier and I'm shallow like a puddle. I say go for that one, but I'm just being selfish lol!

I'm going to do my erotic fantasy story, there's enough children's fantasy out there for now!

Mine may lean that way. I've kept it pretty clean in past years, but I've always dabbled a little with m/m and f/f relationships that are pretty central to the plot and this year I feel like I want to do something a bit more detailed :)

I wouldn't actually define the Kushiel books as "erotic fantasy." They're more like great fantasy that doesn't skip over the sex scenes. Not a huge distinction, but to me erotic fantasy would be a fantasy novel about sex as opposed to a fantasy novel including sex.

That said, much of my work would qualify. I always thought it was kind of sad that fantasy novelists have no problem describing violence, but when it comes to sex we hardly ever see it. I'm not sure if this year's novel will have any sex in it, though - my characters really aren't going to be together for a long enough time, I think.

That's East, and it's a Norwegian story. I read it this summer.

Good for you! The world needs more erotic fantasy.

Wow, those all sound like great ideas. I like the m/m version of Cupid and Psyche (I'm a big mythology geek) but the one with the guy with sexsomnia sounds great to.

All of my fantasy has erotic elements. A lot of the time if there isn't at least one sex scene I think there is something wrong with my stories. My nano is going to have some erotic scenes, but not as many as I normally write because the protagonist is repressed.

Oh, hells yeah!

My first few lines are gonna read at least something like;

I'm here to tell you a secret. It's a threefold secret, so follow along, don't get lost.

Magic is real.

Magic comes from love -- not sweet-cuddles-hugs-and-light love, but down-and-dirty-dear-god-one-more-orgasm-and-i'm-gonna-die-happy-but-still-die love.

And the last part? The more people you love this way -- one at a time works, but hey, all at once is better -- the more magic you can access. Heterosexuals and "pure" homosexuals -- those who enjoy sex with only one gender -- can never be as powerful as a bisexual can. And the more kinds of pleasure you enjoy -- no, the more kinds of pleasure you love -- the more powerful you are, too.

My name's Melody Kirk, I'm twenty years old -- and I'm the single most powerful mage on the planet.

This is how I got that way . . . .

I think that's it, anyway. A lot like that, if not just like that.

I bet you can see why I say "erotic fantasy" fits me like a glove!

I grant your point. It seems like so few fantasy novels out there do bother to include the sex, though. And I do find it incredibly irritating that the sex gets left out while the violence gets described in great detail.

Mmmm, I like. Last year's NaNo project had a similar theme, but I went the other way with it; that magic is fueled by emotions, and the more intense the emotion, the stronger the magic. Lust, of course, is the emotion of choice, but pure, unselfish, unconditional love is the strongest, most powerful magic of all. Because I'm a sucker for the sappy sometimes.

Yours sounds like a lot of down-and-dirty fun to me, though.

edwardsledge - love wil definitely have an effect, because no matter how good a lover you've got, the sex is always better when you love the person you're with - which is where the bad guys get in trouble, cause they do it in a sick and twisted fashion that has zip to do with love. but melody loves the people she has sex with, and loves them lots, by the time the big battle rollls around - so it's a win, even though they sort of have an edge, because of HER edge - love.

I love sex - but I love sex best when I love my partners. i hope that makes me sappy, cause i like sappy.

Kat Fireblade - I sent you nanomail before i got here to see this, so you can ignore the nanomail - blame the forums they load so slow it's scary. And once November gets here and I can, I'll post some yummy-ness, as soon as i get it written. As much as i can, i'll post. and yeah, it gets sexy right away, i think. Unless my mind changes itself. Which it sometimes does but not THAT often.

That sounds really awesome. I'd like to add you as a buddy, if this site will just frelling WORK so I can do anything on it.

What's really interesting is that my D&D character pretty much follows what you describe as her religion. The goddess of magic in that setting is also the goddess of physical love. I love it!

Jacqueline Carey has truly inspired so many people to branch out. I love her Kushiel trilogy (Kushiel's Scion was painful and I do not intend to read Kushiel's Justice. I hate Imriel. I HATE him) more than anything. I would love to do an erotic fantasy, but I don't see it happening this year. I know the side characters are involved in erotic adventures, but the main character (it's going to be in first person as well, so the perspective is blocked) is mostly uninterested in sex. Watch; come November 1 and he'll be a sex fiend, but XD!

Yeah, the Imriel books are definitely not as good as the first three. I still love the writing, but I just don't like Imriel as much as a character. Phedre was totally about accepting what she was. Imriel constantly resists it, which doesn't result in many interesting things happening. I'm mostly still reading to see how she resolves the tension between Phedre and Imriel (totally wouldn't be against them hooking up as a one-time thing).

I'm definitely doing fantasy. It's going to be a darker / horror type fantasy though, and because I never can help myself, there will probably be some erotica thrown in for good measure.

Sappy is the only way to be. Sure, you cry at movies where no one else is crying - but you get to love a lot more about life, and people and - oh, I'd better stop before the sappy gets all over the servers and locks them all up.

Yeah the only thing i'm worried about is balancing the sappy and the raw sex. I want to get all in-your-face with the sex, but still make it plain that Melody loves these people, really deep-down-no-holds-barred loves them - loves them as much as she wants them, even more than she wants them. The wanting I think I can convey pretty easy. The loves them might be harder.

The Kushiel series just hasn't clicked with me, and considering the overwhelming reception its gotten, I feel a little bad about that. I got through a sizeable chunk of the first book, but lost interest way too quickly. Part of me still wants to find another plot-oriented, well developed erotic fantasy, though.

I've never even heard of this Kushiel series. (I [unwillingly] lead a semi-sheltered life.)

What's it about? Could somebody give a newbie a clue, please?

I was actually largely unimpressed with the first book, and found it severely overhyped. But I still felt a certain attachment to the characters, and after much debate, I went ahead and read the next ones. They were so much better.

The main character is a masochist courtesan spy. It's highly political and it is erotic. It's a very elaborate world that draws on our own cultures somewhat blatantly at times. I found the first one kinda mediocre, but I gave the other books a chance and got completely hooked. You should check them out! The author is Jacqueline Carey.

Great ideas! I like the idea of Cupid/Psyche, but I also sort of like the witness protection story. And the sexsomnia story sounds like it would get deliciously hot. ^^

Honestly, I haven't yet read it. I keep meaning to, because of all of its hype, but I read the first three pages, get distracted, and set it back down.

But here's the Wiiki on the first book (with links to the series).

I decided to go with the sexsomnia idea, and yeah, it's going to be wickedly hot. Turns out the jailor is really an incubus who has been feeding off of the guy while he's asleep. Yummy.

Erotica's definitely going to find its way into my novel this year, which is a first for me but I'm excited. And the male MC is quite hunky, so it shouldn't be too hard either ;)

While my book is definately fantasy, I'm not sure how far into erotica it will get... even if it goes at all. The main problem with this is that my MC is somewhat shy, and has been brought up in a culture that promotes motherhood as the ultimate that a woman can aspire to - to the point that sex for anything other than procreation is viewed as a sin, and homosexuals are outcasts! She doesn't buy into the 'sex for pleasure is evil' aspect of her culture at all, but she's so damn shy and repressed...
