My story is about a girl who dies in 48 hours. My problem? I have no idea how she finds out/how she dies. I'd rather have fantasy as my last resort - I love writing fantasy, but this isn't the story for it - so does anyone know of any sicknesses/problems that would cause a person to die in 48 hours? She needs to still be able to do anything a normal person would be able to do - i.e., no disabilities or anything like that. Help?

Hello Scribbles,
My best guess would be some kind of poison that takes 48 hours to kill somebody. (e.g. something that goes after less important intestrines first).
----------Or what about radiation illness? Just look it up at wikipedia. Depending on the dose the symptomes would still develope once after another over some period of time but if you got enought radioactive radiation there's more or less nothing that could save you anymore.

My colleague Sharon suggested something like this story, which was posted on MSN a week or so ago. A brain infection, or meningitis, can cause death very rapidly. It also can cause behavior changes (which can be useful from a story point of view), but doesn't need to debilitate the character. They might suffer from a severe headache but still be entirely mobile.

Should a paracetamol overdose be toxic the person seems to make a recovery and then the liver fails around 72 hours later. Some countries insist that licensed paracetamol contains agents that induce vomiting in higher dosages.
Britain, however, does not as some people are sensitive to the vomit-inducing agents.
One word of caution though, as people's gentic make-up are unique the tolerances to poisons differ thus affecting recovery / death response times. Accuracy about the exact moment of death could not be predicted, except in the very fast acting poisons such as cyanide.

Since there's already a thread on how long it takes someone to die, let's try my question:
How long would it take a young girl to freeze to death? She's naked, outside with an air temperature of 17 degrees Fahrenheit. Her throat has been cut, but that didn't kill her-- it's too cold for her to bleed out as usual (I think. Please correct me if that's not true). Plus the killer had a very bad track record with making these cuts count.

It kinda depends on where she's living, whether she's travelled, if she has a compromised immune system, et cetera, but I bet that some VHFs (viral haemorraghic fevers) could kill within forty-eight hours, and pneumatic plague might even kill in less time.
