Starting with the title.

Are people for or against the term "Sydney-siders"? Would you prefer to be called something else? Like... Sydney-people? I seem to have a slight lack of imagination in that department.

That said, would you prefer to talk about something else? Like the weather. It was hot last week and now it is cold-ish. Don't you love spring?

Sydneysiders sounds good to me :-)

I'm dreading summer. It is my least favorite season. I'll take this strange weather any day!

Spring's not bad, but I could do without these moths. I hate how they find their way into paper bags and between the blinds and the windows - either way, they can make a racket!

I like the term "Sydneysider". It has a nice laid-back feel to it, whereas "Sydney-people" reminds me of "pod-people" from 'Invasion Of The Body Snatchers' (although some would argue that Sydney IS full of pod-people, but that's a discussion for another thread).

What else can we talk about...? I know - let's talk about girls! :)

Actually, I better not. Back in my distant teens, I spent so much time with a friend talking about girls, and not having the guts to actually talk TO girls, that one of my sisters seriously thought that I was gay.

Yes Sydney-siders is nice and casual, laid back enjoying the sunshine... I agree though that summer is too hot... I think we must have the best winters in the world, winter sunny is lovely to bask in... in-between seasons are nice, warm and sunny without keeling over with heat-stroke...

We get hit with it pretty hard being further down south. I'm from the Holsworthy area. Summer is just dry heat without ocean breeze!

oof the moths have been pretty nightmare-inspiring. thankfully i'm not going to be in the country over the summer... heading up to the tropics though, so i don't think it'll be much better.
what kind of meetups do we usually get in sydney? this is not my first time nano-ing, but it is the first time of doing it seriously since during my year 12 exams.

oh, and hello everyone! =)

Yeah, don't mind Sydney-siders, though it does imply a sort of seaside living, which living in the Inner West is so not true. I'm from Campbelltown originally and this will be my first NaNo away from home. I'm living in the Marrickville area at the moment in a shared house and we're all socialists.

This could mean that getting to write-ins and meet-ups would be easier, time permitting.

I'm still considering how approach nano. I work full-time which could place constraints on me. Are there any full-time workers doing NaNo this year? What are your strategies for finding enough time?

The funny thing is, I failed NaNo the first three years I attempted it, and each time I had part of or even all of November off as holidays (in 2005, I was on long-service leave, and I had over two months off from October onwards).

Yet, last year I attempted NaNo while I was at work full-time, and for the first time I succeeded. I was both surprised and thrilled, because before 1 November 2006 I hadn't had high hopes of succeeding (especially as I'd previously been unable to complete NaNo with so much time on my hands).

What helped me to complete NaNo last year while still working full-time included the following:
* I'm single and live alone, so my time was all my own
* I started taking my work laptop PC wherever I went, in case inspiration struck, and thus I was able to write while doing things like travelling on trains and staying over at a friend's place in another city
* one Sunday, I devoted almost all my time to nothing but writing - and thus, that day alone I churned out 5326 words; this year, I'm planning to have several designated 'writing days'
* taking any idea, no matter how ridiculous, and running with it; for example, at one point in my story I was writing chapter after chapter of starship battles, and I wanted a break from it...so, one Sunday morning I decided to give my characters a break by sending them on a holiday in the story's future, and I found it so relaxing and fun that I wrote over 4000 words that day

This year, I should be in a better position to complete NaNo more smoothly - not only is my story already mostly planned, but since last November I now write 3-4 nights a week (before last November, I hardly wrote at all).

I agree with Killraven about the strategies to use. I've won it working full time, and not working at all, but I'd say that the main difference is that when you are working full time you have to be more willing to run with whatever you've got to hand on the day/ evening - and if you can't take your lap top everywhere you go, make sure at least that you've got a pen and paper so that nothing gets away :)

This is gonna be my first year attempting NaNo, so I'm a bit worried about it. I'm gonna try getting some daily practise for the rest of the month by writing another story (I've had lots of ideas in my head that I never got down, so I'll start trying that now) and maybe I'll finish that after NaNoWriMo. That's my plan, anyway.

I've just had a thought... as it's November here before it's November at NaNo headquarters, does that mean we have to wait for it to be November there before we start writing? (it's a bit of an insane question, but my brain has grabbed it and is threatening to send me into full on panic mode over it!)

No, don't worry - we start when it's midnight 1 November here, and finish when it's midnight 30 November here.

Thanks so much for the tips.

This will also be my first NaNo using my own laptop instead of the family's computer (has something to do with working full-time) but I live close to work and live with people so time is a bit up in the air at the moment.

I'm going to try and write in my lunch breaks at my desk and keep it on a flash drive.

Oh, and can you buy No Plot? No problem! from any bookstores in Sydney?

I, myself, love hot weather. I cannot wait for summer to hit, and have been such a baby about the winter weather (damn climate change! damn AEST! coldest winter evah!). This year will be an especially good summer because I've moved from my family home way out west and into the city, so I'll be getting all those lovely ocean breezes.

Plus, if I finish my Nano, I'll be celebrating all summer too! :)

It's okay.
I'm reviving but telling you that you're insane =p
And today, i bought a singlet to combat all this hot weather (even though it's raining) and have dubbed it my writing singlet.
I'm so imaginative.
I figured that in highschool, they told us to have a 'study hat' so that every time we wore that aht, we'd automatically equate it with 'studying' and we'd slip into 'study' mood and achieve, achieve, achieve!
My study hat became a firsbee, and then a fish-rescuing device, and finally an addition to the possums habitat.

Hopefully the singlet has better luck.

As for Sydney-siders... why not. We side with Sydney. We of the sydney side of life, indeed.

Can I ask what's with the rivalry between us and Melbourne?

Sorry if I'm changing the subject here. This is my first NaNo, so I'm just wondering.

It hasn't always existed, as far as i know.
I do remember one travelling bus that stopped by the forums once, and i think there was some kind of rivalry with Canberra, or possibly it was camaraderie, i am unsure.
But alas, i haven't an answer for you.

As for the hat, YAY!

I used to have to colour in the hat pink or some other colour... *tries to recall*
