Just for fun, tell us what you're writing, (or whatever inkling of an idea you have) maybe what inspired you, and how long you've been writing. You don't need to if you're worried about people stealing your ideas, but we're all really good here, and I honestly don't think anyone else would take them (Because you could turn around and take theirs!).

Ah, I was going to post mine, but I realized it's on my laptop in the bedroom and I'm too lazy at the moment to get it. ^^;

I'm planning on writing a science fiction story this time. I've never written sci-fi before and am looking forward to the challenge. I've had the idea for this story for probably a year ot two and have finally decided to try to write it. In the past most of the stories I have written have been fantasy.
I've been writing stories since I was eight or nine. It is something I have always loved to do. Whether I actually write anything that is any good I don't know, but it is a great joy to me to develop stories and characters.

Coming to China actually inspired me to re-write last year's novel (though the jury's still out as to whether or not I actually will). I've seen so many elements that fit so well in the context of the story that I feel I can tell it better this time around.

It's science-fiction, about humanity being holed up in a giant underground city. The story revolves around how it's actually time for them to leave the city and return to the surface, but power-struggles and turmoil threaten to keep everyone trapped until starvation and other nastiness set in.

on a fleeting moment of inspiration i decided to participate in this year's again. it's going to be, uh, literary fiction and it'll be called nobody fucks jane. and ideally themes it will explore include othering and inclusivity, gender roles and stereotyping, globalism/internationalism, silencing and oppression and various reactions to oppression.

Hi Everybody,

This is all new for me. I'm a NanoNewbie. I am not even sure what I am going to write about. I have been reading Stephen King's, On Writing, and have been trying to find my "what if" scenario to start me off. The most recent "what if" was inspired by a story I have heard a few times since my first year here in Shanghai.

What if you came home from the holidays in the US to your apartment in Shanghai and the Ayi told you at the door "you don't live here anymore" because she moved in with your husband of 15 years. In the words of Scoobie - Rut Ro.

Looking forward to flexing the writing muscles!

dude i'm so writing abt shanghai this year. last yr i made the mistake of attempting to write abt AFRICA, which i have never been to and no nothing abt!! lol. so i'm doing a story concentrated in shanghai, so i don't have to take the time to research.

"Write what you know about" - Mark Twain.

it'll be abt a teenage girl from USA who has to move to shanghai. she doesn't want to at first but then she falls in love with it. errmm yeah.. we'l go from there. haha, that's my inkling idea i guess!!

I'm planning on writing a fantasy/gothic novel. I've only really written short stories before so this should be a different and very challenging experience. I was really inspired by the Ghost City that I visited when I was on the Yangtze river cruise. It was pretty amazing location and really got me itching to pick up a pen. I took lots of photos so hopefully they'll help inspire me if the dreaded writers block hits!

Hey all, I don't actually live in China (immigrant >____>;) but I am Chinese, and I go back every other year or so to visit relatives, so I'm affiliating with youse anyway.

I'm doing a lit fic (sigh) about a man who goes back to his hometown after more than 20 years and meets his own daughter (who has OCD). Drama ensues, etc., etc.

That sounds fantastic! I'd love to read this after November, if you don't mind.

I intend to write the following story -- it already has a beginning, but I'll be re-starting it for the nth time for NaNo. (No, I still don't like the beginning even after so many false starts.)

Anyhow, the hook:

By-the-book Detective Matt Locker sneezes every time he is near a vampire or dhampir or anyone with vampire traits. And halitosis-afflicted Vin Silas makes Locker sneeze. Too bad the two have to work together.

During an investigation with no clues, the pair get trapped in another world and Locker finds out that there are worse things than a partner with bad breath who may be turning into a vampire.

First, they get saddled with an impulsive self-proclaimed hero, who has temper tantrums if anyone asks about his baldness.

Then, Locker and Vin discover the world they're trapped on will soon be devoured by an alien realm, and Earth is the next target. All because of the agoraphobic villain, Aeon Syfir, who's bent on ruling the planes just like his ancestor.

The duo must stop Aeon. If they don't, Locker will have no home to return to, and Vin may become worse than a vampire.

Problem is: no one has yet asked the alien realm what it wants. And when the alien realm breaks free of Aeon's control, things just keep getting better and better.

I'll be writing about a lost city where all the things that are lost end up. When they are found again, they no longer exist in the lost world. This includes people - some are lost physically and some mentally or spiritually. So, basically, it's just about the people and their relationships and happenings in the city of the lost. I haven't really thought of the plot. That's my idea. I'm not sure if it's a story that's been written before though, but I'll write it my own way anyway.

This is my first year doing NaNo, and I've never really written much fiction before, but I've gotten into journaling since I moved to Hong Kong. So my novel is going to be a Bridget Jones's Diary - type novel, except about an American teenager. It's tentatively called Caramel.

Hi everyone,
Just wanted to introduce myself - my name is Mio and I'm a NaNoWriMo newbie... but looking forward to the experience. I think I'm going to write a YA novel, I have a vague idea, but I've changed my mind about 20 times now, so your guess is as good as mine, as to what it will actually turn out to be about.
All the best,
mio in Hong Kong

Holy crap. You guys have some pretty cool ideas. Makes me want to re-think mine.

As I said in another thread, I just found out about NaNo a few hours ago and signed up. And here isn't November 5th already! yeesh!

My story, sort of a sci-fi / fantasy mix, is about a boy who travels to another world while he's asleep. But it turns out that this world is real, in the sense that whatever happens there affects his body in our world, both for better or worse. In this world, (a sort of "alternate reality" of our own) he's sent on a quest, of sorts and it's about his personal development and growth during this adventure, which becomes reflected in how he behaves and acts in the "real" world with his family and friends.

I told Peru mine was going to be a romance, but my characters have started getting into trouble already....
Seems like its turning into a commentary on the wastefulness of modern cities. Oh well, I'll just have to see what happens!

LMAO! You just writing whatever comes to mind, or did you set out with a genre and plot and it decided it wanted to do something other that what you thought it would be?
