Hi Shasta County,

I'm in Trinity County. Welcome.

This is my second year. I had a blast last year. Shasta County had several Nanoers last year and I would expect quite a few people to show up eventually.

My hope is to have a write-in event in Redding this year. I don't think it happened last year, although there were some in Chico. I went down to the Bay Area over Thanksgiving last year and attended one. I loved it.

Hey Shasta County and Mountain Blue Bird. I was seriously waffling this year on whether or not to go. This is one crazy year. But I've completed four years of Nano and hit, sometimes within a couple hundred words, 50,000 every time. So what the heck.

Also, I purchased a new toy this year, my Alphasmart Neo. How can I NOT try it, right? And I am about to start a new project. Seems like my writing cycle, after four years, has adapted itself around Nano.

So, should we call you t96753 or would something else be more appropriate?

I added you both to my buddy list. Any other Shasta or Trinity County Folk?

Good luck to everyone!

Hey, hey! :) I'm from Redding/Anderson -- thought I'd be about the only one, to be honest. :P Glad to see other folks here! It's my first year with this thing, so it'll be ... interesting.

Best of luck. :D

I live near Anderson, and would try to attend an event, although I work nights Thursday through Sunday, but something might work!

I welcome you as a writing buddy. I am sure to need encouragement, as this is my first year and indeed, my first large writing effort. I work nights, so e-mail would be better for me. My e-mail is t96753@yahoo.com. Look forward to meeting you!

I also am from the Anderson area. My first year, also. Looking forward to it, but intimidated by the word count!

Woo! Rock on. :D And it's nothing to be intimidated by. Don't think so much about the raw numbers and focus more on just getting the words out -- at least, that always worked for those gosh-darned '1000 word essays' and the like. You might surprise yourself by how much you can get done. :)

Hey! I'm from Redding. Well, I'm originally from the bay area, but I go to school here. I thought I was the only one around too.

An event in Redding would be amazing. I always hear about these Nano events, but I've yet to attend one.

I'm not really sure how the events work, although it'd probably be a lot of fun to try. Even if it was just a one-time thing to meet everyone (or almost everyone) that would be pretty neat. :) Picking a spot and a date/time would probably be the hardest parts of such an arrangement, actually ... hrm.

Hey, writercasey,

I'm pleased to be your writing buddy. I saw the notice of it on my author's page, and just checked on it, with my list of buddy's but you didn't appear. Am I supposed to do something about it too?

Congrats on the Alphasmart - I am hearing a lot of people talking about this contraption. And, go for Nano - even if its a crazy year. Upping the challenge is the whole point of Nano anyway.

I'm thinking of a Saturday morning/afternoon kind of time. I don't really like driving back over the pass from Redding after dark. I was thinking of the Starbucks on the corner of Market and Eureka Way in Redding as a possible meeting place. This Starbucks is less crowded than the one by the Shasta Mall. The problem with the Eureka Way Starbucks is their tables are small. Does Barnes and Noble have a large number of tables? Their busy but book-y.

Does anyone know of another Redding candidate cafe/coffee shop that would welcome people with computers invading their space for a while? I'll do some research, as I'm sure there would be somewhere to hang out for a few hours.

Eek. Well, I'm usually at work on Saturday until at least 3pm, but I might work a half day on Monday and then a half day on Saturday to get out of there at a reasonable (by 10am-ish) time.

That said, the Barnes & Noble does have a lot of tables, but they're pretty small. There's also Breaking New Grounds in downtown Redding, on Yuba street -- I'm friends with the owner's niece and I can see if they wouldn't mind a small group of folks invading at some point in November. Not so sure if they have internet, though. On the upside, they sometimes have a live band that plays there. :)

I'll nose around with some of my coworkers and see what they recommend (though they're probably already sick of hearing about NaNo already.) XD

Hi all!

I'm from Chico now but just finished a stint working in Redding and surrounding area plus I lived there when my son way little. I discovered NaNo when I lived in the Silicon Valley, South Bay Area. The group down there is wonderful and I miss them all.

Attending write ins greatly increases your word count. It's not so much all of the words that you produce during the write in but the inspiration, energy and enthusiasm that you get from the other writers that helps you the rest of the week. Here are a few things that they did in the SoBay:

Have a "Meet and Greet". Just get together before November to say hi and talk about your plans for dodging friends and family so you can have uninterrupted writing time. Decide on a couple of places to hold write ins, one during the week and one on the weekend. See if you can get someone to talk to the owner/manager ahead of time and tell them that you intend to significantly raise the level of creative energy in their establishment and see if they freak out. If so, pick another place. (I would suggest Badd-Ass coffee up on Lake Blvd. Free WiFi and friendly people. I used to pop in to check e-mails.

As far as being intimidated by 50k, don't be. The secret is to not worry about anything until the second draft. Turn off your internal editor and just crank out the words. Free yourself up to write badly. Just get the story idea out and you will be very surprised and pleased by what comes out. You will write things that you never knew you could. It's really cool.

Oh. And one more thing. MAKE A SIGN. You have to put it out so everyone know who the NaNos are and maybe even some cards to hand out to the people that want to know what the heck a NaNo is.

Mmm, have you heard of YAKS, on Bechelli? I know they have a meeting room, but I'm not sure if you have to pay for it or anything...

Hey Everyone,

This is my first year! Kind of scary but I thought I would try something new to do in my free time. Never really written a novel before but thought it might be fun. I have lots of ideas hopefully they will turn into something interesting. I live in Redding.

Welcome everybody! What a great group we have brewing here.

I am terrible about making the in-persons, but p’raps I’ll do better this year. Bad Ass Coffee would be a good spot, I think. Sounds cool, anyway.

I missed some posts back there, so T96753, I was just asking what I should call you, not if I could call you. But thanks for the E-mail. Mine is in my profile, but you’re all free to E-mail me anytime at caseyfreeland@hotmail.com.

Ann, I don’t know that you have to do anything. I think adding a buddy means you are mine, but I’m not necessarily yours. You have to add me also. That way you can keep tabs on all your buddies if you like, but they don’t necessarily have to reciprocate.

Welcome Rebula, Grayed and Ley Blake and thanks for all the great info Doxunt.

And aetherialdrake I am also a dork and adding everyone as buddies.

I'm from Redding. My first time at NaNo too. Sounds daunting, but I'm willing to try for 50,000! Maybe insomnia will be of benefit!

Doxunt,

My sister is a So. Bay Nanoer. That is a very lively group - I went to one of their write-ins last year and the energy was so great having all these typing fingers going at once. I will undoubtedly attend again over the Thanksgiving weekend.

Hello all, I'm from Redding originally, but now I'm in Palo Cedro. This will be my first attempt at Nano. I'm very excited about it.

Okay, now that I've posted that I was excited, I'm so nervous my stomach is sitting in my throat.

Looks like about 10 of us now! Wonderful turn out. So when is our first BadAss Coffee Sunday afternoon meet? The 28th of October would probably work for me. (See how I'm moving the Redding Meet thread back over here.) :) Or if we're not going to do a meet-greet-thing, possibly the following weekend for our first write-in?

Comments? Questions? (If you're going to ask why I'm awake at 3:50AM, it's because my lovely is in San Rafael at the Bioneers Conference, my kids are with their Auntie in Fall River and I took a six hour nap.)

And welcome Unicorn and Photo Girls!

The 28th works great for me. Now I just need to figure out how to *get* to BadAss and that'll be awesome. Hooray for having no sense of direction!

Ya know ... we should probably wear something or bring something so we know who we are (if that makes sense?) I've got no clue what, but ... there's got to be something out there. :P
