Hi all,
This is my third Nano... (I won in 2005, when I had a full-time job... then didn't win in 2006, when I was traveling and unemployed and theoretically had far more time, thereby proving Chris's maxim that "the busier you are, the easier it is.") I live in the Italian Market area of South Philly, and work in Center City (Rittenhouse area) and was wondering if anyone's lurking about who'd like to get together for a kickoff party and/or write-ins somewhere in these general vicinities? Philadelphia's a big enough metro area that I figure we may end up splitting off into little subgroups closer to our homes. So feel free to use this thread to introduce yourself, suggest locations and thoughts for events, etc.
Can't wait to start writing again!
-Sarah

Hi---I'm in Center City, a college student at UArts. All of my friends think I'm crazy, but then again, I'm the only writer in the bunch.

This is my first NaNo...but amazingly, I also live in the Italian Market. I'm looking forward to starting this process, tho I have NO IDEA what to expect. It'd be great to find some more people in the immediate area. (maybe a 12 steps down rendevous?)
looking forward to meeting you all!

Hi! I live in South Philly, albeit on the far western side, a few miles from the Italian Market. But, I love it over on the East side, and last year we had a few write-ins at Rim Cafe (9th and Federal). It looks like Rim is closed these days though. Does anyone have the scoop?
I'm in for write-ins, either in South Philly or CC, cafes, homes, etc.

Do you think 12 Steps Down would let us sit there for a few hours and write? We mostly met at cafes and private homes last year to include the under-agers, but with Philly gone non-smoking, bars would work just as well for me -- provided they're kind of calm and the proprietors don't mind laptop-frenzied denizens...

Not sure about Rim... but just down the block is one of my favorites, Benna's... they've got some nice tables and might be a good place for a write-in, depending on how busy it is at the time. 12 Steps Down could work too. Haven't been there since the smoking ban... are they actually smoke free? (Ray's still has some smoking, so that could be an issue for some people.)

Hi all! I'm also in South Philly, not to far from dandelion_gal. My husband who is also writing this year, works by Rittenhouse Sq while I work in University City, so yeah, we'd love to get together for write-ins around town.

1st timer here too, recent transplant to Philly (from the bowels of the US, i.e. Florida). Employed full-time so am expecting a challenging month. Would be up for kickoff party/write-ins/moral support. Still haven't been to 12 Steps Down, but I had in mind a few places to write:
Last Drop (13th & Pine) upstairs, downstairs, outside
Chapterhouse (9th & Bainbridge)
Washington Square Park
many more...

I am in North Philadelphia, but plan on spending some time in Center City, so I am also interested in places to plop a squat and get to typing.

They appear to be smoke-free... folks are always walking up the stairs and standing around smoking, and the last time I was there about a month ago I didn't smell any smoke inside.
I like Benna's too; it's rather small though for a write-in, if more than 3 or 4 people show up.

Hi Anthony,
Is Last Drop crowded a lot? Back in the day I recall it being packed to the gills, hard to find a seat, that sort of thing... but I loved the comfy sofas and stuff.
Also, a good many of us are full-time employed and will be typing this race fueled by caffeine and sheer stubborn single-mindedness. My big challenge is to let myself be sleep-deprived for a month straight. Should get veeery interesting. :^D

Hi! I live in South Philly. South edge of Queens Village. This is my 3rd year doing NaNo (finished both times). The past two years, I lived in a small, rural town, where I was the ONLY one doing NaNo, so I'd love to get together for some write-ins and get to know some other people who think it's fun to write a novel in a month.

Hiya... this is my first year doing this. And I have suckered three of my employees, two relatives of one of them, and one of my cousins into doing this as well. Ohhh boy.
however, I'm the only one of my batch who's in Philadelphia. I'm in Center City near Pennsylvania Hospital. Anybody doing writing meet-ups around here?
I know theres a quiet coffee shop on 10th between locust and spruce. I dont really know what places in south philly or queen village might be simpatico.
I realized many eyars ago that you i was never going to get much sleep. so, November isnt going to be too much of a stretch. I'm going to take a few vacation days to write, too.

Hello, I'm a college student in University City. This is my third attempt at NaNo and I think I've finally found out what my character was up to the past two years... Of course I'm underage, so if there's ever a decent gathering that doesn't require a birth date prior to 1987 I'd be happy to join...
Otherwise I'll be making countless trips to Wawa and Starbucks on UPenn's campus and depriving myself of sleep and study time.

starrkiddjt2: I'm living in University City on 43rd and I'd be more than happy to write with you to write at pretty much any hour of the night. The 24 hour diner on 39th is pretty nice and I'm sure they wouldn't mind anyone camping a table as long as they bought something (their cakes are yummy).
Also, I go to school in Center City, so I spent a fair amount of time there, though the classes wear me out and I tend to just go home and sleep afterwards. If anyone is planning to meet up, as long as the place allows people under 21, I'd be happy to join.

I live in So. Philly and work in Center City. I would be up for a couple of write-ins. We could try one of the Cosi's around town or even the bookstores. The Penn bookstore is pretty laid back.

Ankers, I live right in your neighborhood -- Cafe Mocha on 10th btw Locust & Spruce never seems that crowded, and Chapterhouse at 9th just south of South is really chill also. If there's one thing that neighborhood doesn't lack, it's hipster coffeehouses.
Unfortunately I'm traveling a lot in November so most weekends I won't be around, but will definitely be in for writing meet-ups midweek either on 9th or over in the Rittenhouse area near work. I wonder how late the La Colombe on 19th stays open. The cafe at Barnes & Noble always looks pretty full up.
I know we're without a municipal liaison, and because of my travel schedule I can't take that on, but do people want to gather at the Capogiro at 20th and Sansom for a kickoff meeting this Thursday? Now that it's cold we shouldn't have to fight anyone for seats...

I also live in the Italian Market area and work near Rittenhouse Square. Meet-ups and write-ins sound intriguing, and we've had...what? about two dozen possible locations suggested?
My biggest problem regarding write-ins is my lack of a laptop. Damn! I could write longhand, then type it out back home, but that's a waste of time and with 50,000 words to pump out, wasting time doesn't seem to be a good idea. Or I could web-enable my cell phone and text my 50,000 words on the itty-bitty keypad. Or maybe not.
Anyway, I'm keeping my eye on this forum and on my NaNoWriMo mail, and look forward to possibly meeting some of you!
