So! I decided to change my original plans for this year and rewrite a Faerie Tale. I'm sure others are doing the same.
So let's have it! Who's doing one, what tale are you writing about, and what are the changes?
For me, I'm tackling The Little Mermaid -- the original version, of course. It actually stays pretty close to that version, with only a few minor changes. My other WIPs of my rewritten Faerie Tale series tend to have more alterations, but this one is staying close to the original. :3 I think this is also the first time I'm writing a book with a very depressing ending.
Alrighty, have at it! ^^

Fairytale, you mean?
(Faerie is usually not associated with fairytales.)
Anyways. Yes. I'm doing a retelling of Cinderella, from the PoV of one of the 'evil stepsisters' (and it may switch to the stepmother sometimes...maybe.) Elanie, or Cinderella, is the antagonist. Basically, Elanie is mean, and Celestynn (the stepsister) is the nicer one (with a bit of an occasional bad temper.)
It will be great fun.
It also has a semi-depressing ending.

ooh, I love Cinderella tale rewrites! I would so read about an evil Cinderella. You must tell me when it is done!
Actually, the story I started for last year's NaNo was a Cinderella rewrite, tho it has deviated very far from the original. There's no prince and no glass slipper, heh. There are loads of magic and butt-kicking though. Right now, this story is competing with another one I came up with about six months ago, which has faeries and demon slayers.

XD I've gotten so used to spelling "fairy" as "faerie" that I don't even realize I do it anymore. ^^;; My bad.

I'm going to have to agree with grey.fuzz, I'm afraid. "Faerie" is viewed as an archaic (and "impressive") way to refer to fairies, though both spellings are accurate, despite what fantastic but often silly Holly Black would have people think.
Oh, please tackle the Little Mermaid, especially if it's Anderson's version! Making it close to the original is good, but remember, if you're planning on retelling a story, make the story interesting enough to justify the retelling. Otherwise, it might as well be copying and pasting!
Now, when are you setting this version? Modern day? Fairy tale time?

One of my WIP's is a retelling of Rapunzel from her younger sister's POV (also one of my few 1st person stories) and once that's done I plan on rewriting Cinderella from one of the stepdaughters POV- she's half-sister to the other two step-sisters.
Personally, I love fairy tale retellings. Two really great ones are 'Beauty' and 'Rose Daughter,' both by Robin McKinley. They're two completely different retellings of the classic Beauty and the Beast.
