Out of curiosity, which language are you planning to write in - Danish or something else? Your first language, or a 'foreign' language?

I haven't actually decided yet. I think it will depend on which of my two ideas I end up using. I'm totally comfortable writing in english and used to it too, and I find that the story flows better when I write it in english. Last year I thought it would be quicker and easier to write in the native tongue by I was so unused to writing fiction in danish that I started suspecting that it didn't make a difference at all.

And there was a short story from 2005 that I just finished translating to english a few weeks ago. Translation is difficult!

I think writing in english would be the most practical language for me to use since 95% of the people I would want to show it to if it turns out to be any good aren't speaking danish.

I'm writing in English:
- English is my natural second language (my mother is English)
- When I started writing fiction I did fanfic (X-files), and for online archiving and/or feedback it had to be in English. These days I write my own stuff, but I've never made the switch to Danish.

Most of the books I read are in English as well; I mainly read science fiction and fantasy, and most of my favourite authors write in English, and I prefer to read any book in its original language (provided it's one I can read; I'd be stuck if it was, say, Japanese). When I'm making up stories I usually think in English as well, so I figure I might as well write in it too.

Plus, it's easier to make the 50K word count - for instance you say 'the car' instead of 'bilen' or 'walking stick' instead of 'spadserestok' - 2 words instead of 1! And it ain't even cheating... ;-)

Ha! Apart from the fandom and the english mother, you sound like you could have been me! :D

Last year I upped my word count by calling one of my main characters Anne Lise instead of Anne-Lise, when I discovered the wordcounter here counted the latter as one word. At the end of november I discovered I had just enough words that it didn't matter so I changed it back because I liked the hyphenated version better and clocked in at something along the lines of 50030 words or so. :p

Well,
I will be writing in English as most Danes would and should turn their noses up at what I could produce in my first language Danish...lol. I remember my 9 grade teacher throwing her hands up in the air proclaiming " Faar du aldrig laert at bruge kommaer or punktum.... here er en raekke af dem du glemte...fyld dem saa lige ind og giv mig stilen igen!" Well I did and as a smart ass I added a few extras on the bottom of my next paper commenting "here are a few extras, just in the case I forgot some, You can fill them in as needed" She was not impressed!

Well, for once I'll be writing in Danish. Can it really be true that I (and my writing buddy) are the only ones?

Normally I'd write in English, being very used to it (father is English) and for some reason I often find it easier and flowing.

But as a challenge and somewhat needed, it will be Danish. Mjeh.

I assume people will write in their mother tongue. I am therefore writing in English. I am toying with tackling a small novel in a few years in French, my second language, and then perhaps Danish, in which I am now intermediate.

I can read Danish at this point but I would not hazard wrecking the language by trying to write a novel(la) in Danish.

Half the books I read are in English but I'll be writing in Danish this year.
Maybe next year I'll consider writing in English.... But this year I feel enough pressure as it is just to write 50.000 words so adding the extra pressure by doing it in English is not really necessary!

I think you are quite sensible not to put on that extra pressure of writing in English.I know that for me, when I am writing I want to be able to just write, not need to stop and think about whether I am writiing it in correct grammar etc for a secondary language.

Nope, I will too - and my writing buddies as well. I'm surprised at the number of 'more-or-less-native' english speaking participants affiliated with the danish region :)

If I could, I would write mine in english.

even as a native speaker of english I make mistakes and danishisms creep in.

in NANORIMO grammar, spelling and typos are totally unimportant whatever language you use - flow and finishing come first

edit in December

Hope to be back in DK for Yule

First I have to say I haven't fully decided to even be participating this year. I know I posted some months back saying I definitely would, but... Suddenly work is really filling up my entire world, plus I have a hundred different volunteer projects running. I am pretty sure I would not make it if I did start. Not unless I cheated, say began earlier, but then, if I could not keep the starting date, would I keep to the finishing date?

Anyway, if I will be participating I will be writing in Danish. Not that I have any problem writing in English. I write stuff in English every day, and read English books. But Danish is my mother tongue, so I believe I am bound to know more words in Danish, which would make my style more full. It could be fun to write in English. Actually I often think in English, especially when I make up stories. But I just think that I would never be able to do is as well as someone whose first language is English...

I wrote in Danish last year, and I am quite sure that I will do so again this year... That way, I can write without having to tumble with grammar and such..

Even though I'm 100% Danish, I will be writing in English. First, because the words seem to just come to me when in English, whereas the Danish words usually have to be thought about constantly, and second, because most of my friends I'd want to show it to are English or have another native language than Danish or English.

English. My written English is much better than my Danish. (eventhough I was born and raised in Denmark)

English. No doubt about it. If I do get around to writing (which is entirely unlikely) I'll be writing science fiction and sci fi in Danish just doesn't work. Besides, my written English (after many years of playing online roleplaying games) is much better than my written Danish. These days I struggle to even compose a decent email in Danish. Shame on me. But such is life in the modern Internet world.

Hvordan gør I ?

I'll be writing in English. Basically I read very little fiction in my first language - Norwegian - and definitely feel more comfortable writing stories in English. My written Danish is extremely formal, and not really suited for fiction, either.

Falkruse,
There must be something about that fact. My written Danish is terrible too. Maybe because I was never motivated by the pedagogery in the socialistic school system???

Good Luck!

The vast majority of the books I have ever read (voluntarily) have been in English. Add to this the fact that my writing buddies are foreign and would like to be able to read what I'm writing, and my choice is pretty clear - it's English for me this year.

I can´t navigate the sodding site! Where do I telle the NoNoWriMo Forum that I´ve reached 3418 words on the second day of writing?!

Then that only makes sense!I am strongest in oral Danish, then in reading, then in comprehension (of oral) , then in writing. My writing is so basic I would not be able to say what I want to say at more than a children's book level.
Happy writing!

If I could, I would write mine in english.

Lots of changes happening in Denmark that have caused it to be so. Denmark, wanting to be more significant on the global scene, Copenhagen wanting to be an international European city, and Danish companies like Mærsk, Novo Nordisk etc using or beginning to use Engish as the working language. I teach Business English on contract for some of these companies part-time and they are making requirements that people have at least a certified B1 level of English. Also, there are lots of students coming to Denmark from around the world as Danish universities seek more money from foreign students in their efforts to be international.

But it only makes sense, to me, to write in your native language so I really had figured that those for whom Danish is a mother tongue, would write in Danish and for those who are residents of Denmark but have a different mother tongue would write in whatever that is. Me, personally, I am pretty good at reading the Danish posts here so I can respond, but it is easier for me to respond in English for the purposes of answering in a timely manner. The site was so slow this last week so it made answering tough in any language!
