Maybe now would be the time to define this "High Fantasy". I honestly can't say where my fantasy falls at this time, except to say that it in no way involves our world.

Is High Fantasy and Epic Fantasy the same thing? It would be nice to have a definition of all the different types of fantasy.

High fantasy and epic fantasy are usually synonymous, though epic fantasy may more often include a journey of some sort. Both high and epic fantasy are firmly routed in European historical trends: the pseudo-medieval settings. This includes kings and queens, lords and ladies, knights and squires, and such things as dragons and magical amulets and the like.

The theme of high or epic fantasy is usually "Good vs. Evil," and often includes a large cast of characters, a vast physical setting, and it may cover a long length of time.

Thanks, that helped a lot.

I guess I can now say I'm doing high fantasy.

If it helps, high fantasy can be thought of as Tolkien in style, and epic fantasy can be thought of as Tolkien in scale.

Is that the same as neo-high fantasy?

I'll know when it's done. I do epic fantasy and it gets high fantasy at times, but my MC is a horse, an intelligent, sapient horse who's not magically bound to one rider but starts out the book at the start of a scene in The Two Towers that had me wince for the horses involved -- charging downhill at orc pikemen. Pikes at the bottom of hills kill heavy cavalry as long as they hold the line. During the charge my poor MC has to think of some way to survive those pikes and is very annoyed with the chap on his back, who may get killed in that battle. Except the pikemen won't be orcs, just soldiers with twelve foot long spears and a good reason to hold the line so that they do survive.

yeah you nailed it pretty well. Tolkein is a good way of thinking about it.

That sounds brilliant! Will there be an excerpt? Please?

There's sapient horses in my world, but I've no idea whether they'll actually show up in my story or not... alas.

I'd yap more and ask question, but my brain's kind of dead from Latin and riding lessons... /medievalist, /equestrian

A-ha! That helps wonderfully! My story will definitely be an Epic-Fantasy, though I'm trying to avoid it sounding like High fantasy like it's the plague, I'd rather it be called Tribal fantasy with an odd steampunk bent. Ha ha, I have no idea if all the themes I'm trying to incorporate will even work let alone produce something interesting.

Mine is high fantasy that would also be epic style. Boy meets dragon and must defeat the Shadow. That sort of thing.
