Looks like the forums are on an even keel now, so let's get the ball properly rolling! It's a huge, weighty cannonball that's going crash into November leaving a huge hole through which we'll all pour with our novels in hand!

Well, I'm already up to speed on the rambling - let's all introduce ourselves.

I'm Stephen, and I've been an ML for three years now. I'm on a good run now of three wins in a row, but the first year I took part I came nowhere near finishing. I live in Birmingham, but I'm from Yorkshire originally. My novels tend to be science fantasy. I'm really looking forward to taking part again - I don't do much writing for the rest of the year.

I'm Tom. I've done NaNo the last three years with three wins (variable levels of enjoyment and satisfaction). I live in Leamington, so I'm sort of in the outer orbit of Birmingham: in three years I've made one meet-up, during ScriptFrenzy this year (plus, weekends in general are a bad time for me). Ah well.

I also only tend to write during NaNo.

Hello!

I'm Melissa in Malvern, having a go at this for the first time...! Why? Well, I love writing, and tend to "do a bit here and there" whenever an idea pops into my head, but I'm very bad at finishing things. Maybe this will help! :-)

So what sort of stories do I write? I seem to have had a go at almost everything over the years... Recently I've been mulling over a few fantastical/sci-fi ideas, and also revisiting a few favourite humorous characters who reside in something more like "the real world". For this project I'm considering something set in the past.

Well, that's enough burble for now!

Good luck everyone...

Hello assorted Midlanders,

I am a n00b both to NaNo and Birmingham - I've been living here about a year and work in delightful Coventry. I first heard of NaNoWriMo about 6 months ago when I picked up a copy of No Plot, No Problem in Waterstones but decided to wait until the real thing to have a go. Hopefully having the book on hand will give me strength when I feel I'm failing; just as the Bible does when being peer-pressured into trying crack.

I like reading all sorts so I don't have a specific track in mind for my novel quite yet: I have this idea that my narrator can be heard by my protagonist and I have a feeling that the story will quickly fall down the rabbit-hole...

Hi, Germain here,

I live and work in Solihull but am a Brummie by birth.

Have done nano for the last two years and finished both times. I really enjoyed the write-ins last year and they were enormously heelpful getting me back on track when my word count dropped.

Probably won't be able to make any this year as I have a new job and work on Sundays. If anyone else wants to arrange any write-ins for Saturdays let me know...

Hi, I'm Derek (as my username would suggest, I don't hide behind a 'handle' these days) and I live in Birmingham. I first took part in NaNo last year and finished on the last day with hours to spare! Looking forward to writing again this year and meeting lots of new people (and old friends) at the write-ins!

My name's Lily. I live in Malvern. I've done NaNo for the past two years and won once. I went to one write-in last year, but I'm hoping to come to as many as possible this year. I'm going to try and get some people from college to come too.

Hi, I'm Annika, and this is my fourth year of doing NaNo.

Some of you might remember that I MLed with Stephen last year; I've stepped down this year, because November looks like it's going to be a little insane. Mr Satu and I are in the process of buying a house, and we may just be moving in around the end of November; there are also visits to relatives that he's threatening me with, and this will be the first time I do this while I actually have a job, so ... it'll be interesting!

It's nice to see some familiar faces, as well as so many new people! Hope you all have a wonderful NaNo, and I should at least make it to the kick-off meet, so -- see lots of you there, I hope!

Cheers,
A.

Hi All,

I'm John, and I'm the co-ML with Rolnikov this year. I started doing Nanowrimo in 2003 and crashed out at about 45,000 words, but have won every year since, even if some of the resulting "novels" have never seen the light of day again.

I tend to write quite a lot during the rest of the year when I get chance. In fact, I'm still trying to finish the second draft of my nano-novel from last year, and should really be working on it right now instead of looking at the forums. It doesn't bode well for November.

I have no idea what I'm going to be writing this year. I tend to gravitate towards science-fiction, but would like to try and write at least one novel set in the real world.

Looking forward to seeing some of you at the various meet-ups and write-ins this year.

John

Hi my name's Emma. I live in Worcester and this is my second year doing NaNo but I didn't win last year. I'm hoping to go to as many of the writings as possible. I haven't decided what genre it is yet but I've got some ideas. I'm going to try and get my friends to join. :)

I'm Chris.

Currently living in Bridgnorth.

I managed to complete my first Nanowrimo last year. (I think with about 58,000 words), whilst moving house (so no excuses Satu).

I'm going to have another go this year, since I really enjoyed doing it last year. I really enjoyed the couple of write ins I made it too and the TGIO party.

Probably going to write a sequel to last years. Hopefully, it'll be madder, gorier, scarier with an even bigger death toll. Will try and incorporate more fantasy dares this year.

Doubt I'll make the Kick off party, but will try to make some of the write ins.

Hi my name is Natalie. I did (and won) NaNoWriMo for the first time in 2005 but unfortunately, because of university work, I didn't get chance to take part last year. This year I'm back though and hoping to write the sequel to the book I wrote in the 2005 NaNo! :)

I'm living on the edge of Kidderminster right now but was born in Birmingham and lived in various countryside areas around it all my life.

As for genre, I'll be writing supernatural fiction - which would most likely be classed as horror even though it isn't horrific.

Hi to everyone and good luck!

Hello I'm Kat, I live in Malvern. It's my first time doing this so I don't really know what I've let myself in for...
I really like writing, I love escaping into a dream world (I especially love daydreaming when I'm supposed to be working, but don't we all?).
I haven't given much thought about what I'll be writing yet, in fact I haven't got a clue, but I'm guessing that's going to be half the fun.

Hi, I'm Mark, live in Wolverhampton and work in Birmingham. I had one lame attempt at NANO last year. I have written bits and pieces, but am hoping that this will give me the impetus to really get into something. I am excited and terrified, it's areal challenge to myself. I've got half an idea, but keep putting off revisiting my ideas.
I've not been to any events before.

Hello. My name's Charlotte, and this will be the fourth year that I'll be taking part in NaNo. I've completed it twice, and crashed out due to some abysmal writer's block once. My weekends are ALREADY fully booked so I wont make it to any write ins unfortunately.

I live and work in south Birmingham. I like cats, knitting, and heavy metal. :)

Hi! I'm Jenny, I did NaNo last year, and crossed the 50,000 mark with three days to spare (that was because I was jetting off to Germany on an exchange, but anyways!). I'm in year 11 and I live near Stratford - Upon - Avon. Two of my friends are also doing NaNo this year, which will be awesome.

I was wondering if you're going to be doing the Novel Writing Handout this year. I found it imensely useful last year, and I still have the graph stuck to my wall. :)

I'm Cheryl and I live near Albrighton, between Wolverhampton and Telford.

I've never done this before. I read about it in The Writing Magazine and thought it would be a fun and rewarding challenge.

I did get 20000 words into a novel once before a read-though made me fall asleep. "Clearly," I said to myself, "this isn't going anywhere."

I don't know how I'm going to manage this because I have an 11 month old daughter who demands an awful lot of my time, but I think I have the determination to have a really good try, so... here goes!

Hi I'm Katherine. I actually hail from Hertfordshire, but I'm at the Birmingham uni, and since this is where I'm going to be during NaNo I thought I'd try and sneak in here...This is my second attempt at NaNo (my first failed abysmally) but I'm far more determined this year, and even have some semblance of a plot!

Hi!

As you'll have seen from the other thread I'm not quite a Birmingham Nanoist, I live in Nuneaton.
My real name is Sara but I've gone by FaeWitch on most of the forums I frequent for a few years now. My fiction is mostly fairly high fantasy but there are random elements of urban, sci-fi, horror, historical and what ever else I happen to be fixating on at the time.

This is my third year doing Nano and I'm just hoping that it will be quieter than the last two, 2005 I started out on a narrow boat for a week then my laptop blew up (luckily it was replaced by my ever patient and loving parents). Last year I ended up in the process of moving and very nearly quit half way through...nearly. So far two tries, two wins. I'm hoping to make it to some of the write ins this year, maybe even the kick off and/or TGIO parties.

Anyway, good luck to all of you and hopefully I'll see you around next month.

a write in is when Nano'ers meet up and write like there butts are alight with fire and Doom.

Also I am Darren, I see a lot of faces I know and some new faces :D yay!!
Year number Five for me, did the Hat-trick for the last 3 years but failed SO bad the first 2 years!!
Anyway, Im doing things *slightly* different this year. Not ONE Nano Ive started has been finished so I'm carrying on with last years Nano in the hopes that i'll have a FINISHED Novel. Heh.
Good luck everyone!!

This is like an Alcoholics Anonymous group...

I'm Charlotte, I've never done a NaNo before, and up until about two weeks ago I was convinced that I would never write a novel.

I write poetry, short stories, erotica, children's fiction, haiku, short stories... everything except a novel.

I have issues with motivation and so need all the support I can get.

My novel is kind of sci-fi (more "1984" than "Stargate") romance, heavy on the erotic scenes... I'm hoping to shock, enlighten, and write one of those books you're made to study for A Level Literature...

Hi

My name is Susan and I live in Walsall, have for the last fourteen years. I wanted to take part in NanoWriMo last year and the year before, but family comitments meant I couldn't as I would be way to busy looking after family.

So this I have decided to chance it and take part.

Hi again everyone, and a big welcome to all the new wrimos!

And welcome back to all the old ones too, obviously.

I just wanted to say, in a fairly trite way, that it's nice to see so many new faces. Don't worry - I can't actually see your faces.

I've been taking some new prescription painkillers today, so excuse me if I don't make as much sense as you'd like. Or perhaps it's just that pre-November vertigo taking hold. I'm sure I'm not the only one still wondering what the Dickens I'm going to write about this year, and whether it might be slightly more intelligible than last year's effort.

Anyone doing any planning this year? I usually say "this year I'm going to do everything to plan", and then ditch the plan at the last moment. About a week ago I had decided I was going to write a novel with 30 narrators, and each day I would write a version of the same event from the point of view of a different narrator. And all the narrators would be sitting on the number 126 bus from Wolverhampton to Birmingham. But I've gone off that a bit now, so if anyone fancies writing that novel, I'd quite like to read how it turns out.

I'm from Virginia, so I hope you don't mind a request from across the pond. . .

I'll be writing a novel about the Claudian invasion of Britain in 43 AD, and my protagonist, who is a Batavian by birth, will be involved in many of the great events in the years following. One of the key events, of course, will be the Romans' destruction of the Druid haven on Anglesey in 60 AD, and I'd like to ask if anyone has a strong background in this fascinating period of history. If so, I know my story would benefit greatly from a healthy dose of local color and experience. If you think you might be available for questions in the future (once I start to get to that part of the story), please feel free to contact me via private message.

Thanks, good luck in your writing this year, and I hope to hear from you soon!
