I posted this into the Horror section already, but I figured it would be worth a cross-post here...

**********

Knowing that this is my first attempt at this, I am definitely "chomping at the bit" to get moving on it. What are you doing to get into the mood of the story, or to start planting the seeds of the plot?

I have begun by creating some names and characters. Getting them set in my head. And -- since there is a technology/corporation aspect to my story/antagonists -- I am writing some of the memos that are being circulated by some of the characters. These will not see the release of the story, but they are helping me to set up motivations. The next weekend is pretty spent for me, so this is probably the only thought I am going to be able to put into it.

What are you doing?

In my case I haven't got the story itself started (the planning stages) so much as looking over software to use for writing. Yesterday over on the NanoTech board they had a link to where you could get Liquid Story Binder for free rather than having to pay almost 50.00 to register a copy. I took advantage of that offer and am working out how to use the program so I can set things up with it. It looks interesting so far.

I've been working on other stories that I have in progress (to get back into the habit of writing every day), working on word building (I have a magic system and several kingdoms to make up), figuring some mid-sized details of the plot, and getting to know my characters better. I'll have plenty of details to work out when I'm actually writing in November, but at least this way I don't have to try and figure out the big picture and such while I'm trying to put the story down "on paper."

I think you are becoming more pepared for this than i am. :D no story thus far, and not really planning for it. for some reason I think writing on the spot will work. :S Instead, I'm hoping to get other projects and plans out of the way so I can just focus on my writing. It's not working out too good, because it requires the SAME dedication needed in writing. *sigh* in due time, and some work.

I've been working on getting ready for six months now... though that was all research time. As of about 4-5 weeks ago I've started to plot (I have a nearly complete plot consisting of most if not all of my major plot points) researching a bit more on 19th century past times for the middle classes, and working on character profiles.

I figure I'm probably okay to go, but I'd like to do a bit more character profiling and know a bit more about things they did in mundane life to space out my major plot points. (This is a bit difficult, though as it doesn't appear there's all that much that was done.)

Just working on characters, main ideas and such. If I do too much prep I get nervous.

Erm...mainly I've been avoiding, pretending to do homework, really doing homework, and trying to avoid worrying about the fact that I have nothing but a loose main theme based off an elusive dream.

If I'm lucky, I just might be able to live.

Well, I have been waking up earlier and earlier, so that I am prepared to wake up at 4:00 a.m. every morning in November. I don't think I could get myself to write so much at any later time.

Sounds a little difficult, having to go through all that research. A little confining as well. It's a terrible thing to have an idea, and to mold it into a way you want, and when you finally write it...you realize it's taken a different tun from your plan. :S Hope it all works out. Months of research MUST yield results! :D

hopefully your efforts will pay off, because it's heck on the body to force new habits, even though intentions are good.

I'm also getting my eyes checked after lunch this afternoon. I won't have a new prescription tonight probably but hopefully it won't take too long and new glasses will help I imagine. :) I've got some structure worked out on my novel. It's going to be split into 4 parts each 5 chapters long. Each chapter will be further spilt into parts (as I'm writing it in diary format). I have some rough details on my main character as well.

I've been planning my story since the beginning of school (September), so I'm pretty much prepared as far as that goes. For my Dad's house, I have a nice 24 pack of Vault (inhuman amounts of caffiene add that surreal touch I'm seeking for my story)that I can drink to get me through the long nights/early mornings of typing for when I'm at his house, and for Mom's...well, I'm just hoping for some down time.
I absolutely cannot wait. My first NaNoWriMo!
