How are preparations coming for everyone? And, for that matter, what do YOU do to prepare for NaNoWriMo?

Me, I'm still doing my world building, character building, and plotting - it's fantasy on a made-up world, so I'm building everything from scratch. I have the basics of my plot down, but only the basics. I still need the nitty gritty details done because that's how my brain works best.

I've also been thinking of possibly doing two novels this year, but haven't decided yet. I think I'll wait and see how it goes - I haven't even had a win for a few years, so that might be too much for me right now. OTOH, I've managed 100k words in 2 1/2 weeks a year ago, so it's actually doable for me. I dunno - like I said, haven't decided, but if I do, I also need to plot - in detail - the second novel as well, which is science fiction. I've got the broad brushstrokes down for that one as well, and the world is built, such as it is, but details are required.

The husband has been warned, so he knows what to expect. We still have yet to discuss bribes for the muse. In past years, it's been takeaway lunch packets to save me from cooking, but this year, we don't live close to any place that has decent lunch packets, so it's not so viable. I'm open to suggestions on what to bribe the muse with... :D

So. What about you? How are your preparations coming? Do you need help with anything?

I've done some character sketches, background stories, and even a coherent ending to what I am going to write. I just hope that when November 1 comes in I will not forget to write all the things that I was planning to incorporate into my novel. Nobody in my family knew that I joined this (but then they all knew that once in a while I get hit by the writing bug, so it won't surprise them at all).

I've been planning to buy a laptop just so I could write till the wee hours of the mornings and whenever I like, but it's already October 9 here local time and I have not made any move yet to purchase a Lappie I've been eyeing for sometime now, but that's because the practical one in me is trying to talk me out of purchasing something that expensive using my credit card when there are a hundred and 1 things that need to be fixed/bough/settled. I'm not giving up yet that maybe, just maybe I'll be able to get to buy that before Nano month end. hmmmm.....maybe if I finish on my first try I could use that as an excuse to reward myself.....you think so?

As for other preparation, I am in front of the computer an average of 10 hours a day, and yes I can write if I want to without worrying about losing my job (after all I can't fire me...hehehe) My problem is having the discipline to write and not use all the distraction around me as an excuse not to write.

Hey, I used to be self-employed, too. Oh, wait, I am still... :D Yep, I know exactly what you mean! Except I also have deadlines that still have to be met...

Laptop as a reward? Yeah, that's feasible. ;) Have you thought about an Alphasmart or a Quickpad instead? They're much cheaper than a laptop, and the Alphasmarts, I hear, run forever on a couple of batteries and are durable as heck. They're also much smaller and lighter than laptops.

My preparations are not done. *sigh* Must. Finish.

(turns on inner editor) Just want to correct myself my earlier post should read "October 29 and not October 9* (turns off Inner editor again)

I've seen an Alphasmart and I don't think it's available locally, and besides I've been spoiled rotten by microsoft windows and I don't think I can't survive if I can't use anything that resembles an ordinary computer with a WIN OS. I think an ee pc will be hitting the local market come Nov. 5 but it's price is a bit of a drawback for me. It's only a few thousand cheaper than the cheapest laptop available. Sure it could do the job, but if I want to store large files I will still need to buy a USB...then I might as well go and but myself a cheap lappie, with more features and larger storage.

Don't worry about that preparations, I'm sure all of us are not that really prepared, but come November come hell or high water we will finish this :-)

I've written two novels before (although not in 30 days) and spent entirely too much time, I thought, planning and laying out plot lines in advance. So, this time I'm going in with nothing. Absolutely nothing. This is going to be interesting.......
