Mr. Ian Woon Roll Call (a contest of sorts!)

Mr. Ian Woon is an anagram for NaNoWriMo. For years now it has been somewhat of a tradition for NaNoWriMo participants to include him (and his affiliates!) in their novels in countless (often hilarious!) ways. Last year Mr. Ian Woon was vampire food in my novel, this year he's the creepy boarding school headmaster. Anyway! I've decided to make this a challenge of sorts, a contest if you will.

If any of you use Mr. Ian Woon in your novels, no matter how large or small his part, please send me the pages on which he appears. I will read them and along with a group of impartial judges we'll choose the few that we like best. Then I'll post them here for you guys to vote on!

Here is the best part: It doesn't actually have to be "Mr. Ian Woon", it can be any anagram of the word "NaNoWriMo" made into a name. Here is a list that I pulled before the forum was wiped:

Mr. Ian Woon
Naomi Rown
Irma Wonno
Omar Wonin
Marion Now
Rowan Mion
Norman Iwo
Naomi Worn
Nan Mowrio
Ann Woomir
Roman Woni
Rio W. Noman
Roma Winon
Riann Woom
Owin Moran
Min O'Rowan
Roman Wino
Namoin Row
Omar Ninow

First prize is a $25 gift card to Starbucks!
Second prize is this years NaNoWriMo Poster! This poster is only available as a donor gift when donating $100 or more!

Please submit your excerpts no later than 11/25. Winners will be announced the last week of November and you MUST be at the TGIO Party to claim your prize! Otherwise it will be awarded to someone cool enough to attend ;o)

Good Luck!

What's the word

I thought it might be kind of fun for us to share what the magic word 50,000th is as we reach that goal. (I just hit it, and, yes, I am enjoying a bit of celebratory procrastination.)

My 50,000th word is "to."
Friday Night Write-In Dates&Times

I've received a lot of nanomail asking for another write-in during the week that was a little closer so I'm holding a Friday night Write-In each week at my apartment in South Tulsa. I live around 91st & Sheridan. Please be advised that I had a cat here for about a year so if you have severe cat allergies it probably isn't a friendly place for you! I got a kitten on 10/13 and she will be in the apartment for the 13th, 20th & 27th write-ins, so again if you have kitty issues you have been forewarned!

Bring a snack or drink to share with the group if you like!

My apartment is about 800 sqft with seating for about 10.

It's RSVP only as I have to nanomail you my address and directions.

South Tulsa Write-Ins (the number after the date is how many seats are left after I start getting RSVPs):

WHEN:
November 06th- 2
November 13th- 6
November 20th-7
November 27th-6

7:00pm until whenever people leave, I'm a night owl so people can stay as late as they like. Lord know I'd be up writing anyway.

TGIO Party

I'm curious when the best time for the TGIO (Thank God It's Over) Party would be. I was thinking the first Friday night in December. That would be December 4th. We could do an evening party or a daytime party on that Saturday or Sunday. One of the awesome Wrimo's is offering up her community's club house (at 11th & Garnett) to host the event so I need to give her a date and time ASAP so she can get it reserved!

Let me know what you guys think!
What are you writing about?

What is everyone writing about this year?

This year i'm writing about this girl who's dad is from an alternate dimension. Her dad hides her away in our dimension (her mom is from here) to keep her from his brother. Her dad's villainous brother NEEDS her because she has super awesome powers that will heal the woman he kidnapped as she is very ill and dying. The brother kills the girls mom in order to draw her back to her childhood home (he can't find her otherwise) and chaos ensues. Basically alternate dimensions, childhood friends, and erased memories.
What I love about NaNoWriMo

Now that my little plot-crisis is past, I thought I'd start a list of the things I love about this experience. Feel free to add your own!

1. I'm writing a lot of crap, but I'm writing it so fast that I don't even care that it's crap.

2. I just decided to quit fighting my point of view, so I switched from third person to first person in the middle of a paragraph. I can feel my high school English teacher cringe.

3. The deeper I get into a writing session, the less it feels like I am working at getting the words on the screen. It's almost like my fingers are flying of their own volition, and real words - some of which actually make sense - are magically appearing. These are the things that - misspellings and screwed up verb tenses aside - I think will actually be what the final draft is based upon.

4. I've learned to say, "I can figure that out later," and move on with the story. I'm now amazed by how many stories I have just abandoned when the going got tough.

My name is Amanda, I'll be 25 on Christmas day and this is my fifth year participating in NaNo.

I'm an up-beat (or beat-up depending on the day!) Vet Tech and I work for a small hospital in South Tulsa.

I moved to Tulsa 5 years ago (OMG How is it possible that its been five years?!) from the Bay Area in CA. I like it better here but I miss the weather at home!

I've written 5 complete novels and plan on sending out my first set of queries for the novel I wrote during NaNo last year in December!

Now what?

I'm 26,000 words into my novel, and I've completely changed my mind about my story. Not just where it needs to go next, but what needed to happen with the first 25,999 words to get it where it needs to go next. I'm not just talking plot here, either - my characters are completely different people than the ones I started out with, the main conflict has changed...only the basic idea in its most generalized form has stayed the same.

What do I do? It seems silly to keep writing the story I'm in now, and I'm not even sure I can. There are scenes that I've written that I plan to keep, but most of what I've written is no longer viable. Should I start completely over? Should I insert a little note that reads, "From this point on, I'm working under the assumption that the stuff in (insert name of document that includes all the notes from this morning's brain flash) has happened," and worry about words 1-25,999 in the rewrite phase? Would it be cheating to start over again in a different document and then moosh the two documents together when it comes time to submit word counts?

My biggest consolation is that I would have had no idea what the story needed to be without that first 26,000 words.

I guess this is my official welcome to Week Two, huh?
Write Or Die!!

I just want to make sure that NO ONE forgets about this life-saving tool. I wrote 3k in 50 minutes last night (effectively catching me up!) because of it!

I acutally went ahead and purchased the Desktop Edition for only $10 and it is SO COOL. If you know other people who have the Desktop Edition you can word-war with them within the program, there are way more settings and it even logs the number of words you've written total in all your sessions, how many punishments you've received, your average word count and how many words kamikaze mode has eaten. It is awesome!

http://writeordie.drwicked.com/

When you're done don't forget to copy the text you've just written and paste it into your novel!

Happy Sunday writing everyone!
Happy Holiday! (ML Appreciation Day)

Here's an excerpt from http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3412439

"And there's another, more exciting holiday coming up on the NaNoWriMo calendar as well! Sunday, November 8 is Municipal Liaison Appreciation Day. This is the day we all reach out to our hardworking volunteer MLs with buckets of thanks and stacks of fresh-baked pies to thank them for everything they do to keep us motivated every year. If you've appreciated your ML's efforts, please send them a NaNoMail or email, or post in your Regional Lounge this Sunday and let them know!"

So tomorrow is a holiday! No write-in tomorrow, so I'll celebrate at the Monday night write-in.

Thanks, Amanda! (((((((((((((((((((((((((((((((HUGS))))))))))))))))))))))))))

how do you write yours?

Hi guys,
I am almost 16k in on my first nano novel. My questions is, how do I keep from getting slowed down by my own confusion? lol.

Should i print out what I have, make small notes in the margins to keep myself straight?

Should I continue on without without abandon?

I am kind of at a stand still just because I want to keep the theme strong and not go off into wild tangents. So how do YOU reach 50k without getting confused?

Any advice appreciated. xoxo
Encouraging Facts

I just bought a copy of the NY Times bestseller "Water for Elephants" by Sara Gruen. I was in Sam's yesterday looking at the books and a complete stranger (never met an incomplete stranger, have you?) recommended the book so passionately, I had to buy it. I told her about NaNoWriMo and that several best sellers had come from the contest.

So I got home and looked up Sara Gruen. Guess what. Yep, "Water for Elephants" was a NaNoNovel first! And it is being made into a movie! She said it was a really bad first draft. Check this out http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/3141870

Happy Noveling!

There's a nasty little person in my head

I know it's pretty early in the game for this. After all, we just started writing yesterday, right? But my inner critic is already banging on the closet door. I don't know how she worked the knots in the ropes loose so quickly, but judging from the amount of noise she's making, she's mad. Bad news for me.

I can pretty much ignore her while I'm writing, but when I'm not writing she shouts nasty little things at me. Like: "Why are you bothering with this?" and "Do you really think that last 1,500 words was any good? You should delete that." and "I don't think you have a marketable story."

Here's the thing - I know I'm a decent writer. Well, at least I've been told that I am. Then again, a lot of those people who make total idiots out of themselves on American Idol have been told they can sing, too. But I digress. Every time I get going on something that stupid little critic derails me, and I usually end up quitting. Then I get mad at myself.

Does anyone else have a critic living in their head? Or are Anne Lamott and I just insane? Assuming the latter is not the case - well, at least not for me - how do you get your critic to leave you alone?
Greetings Tulsa Wrimos!

My name is Amanda and I’m your Municipal Liaison this year. This is my first year as a Municipal Liaison so I’m definitely open to suggestions from all of you on how to make November as stress-free (HA!) as possible! As Municipal Liaison it is my job to schedule write-ins, our Kick Off and TGIO parties and, most importantly, make sure that everyone is having an enjoyable, positive experience.

This week I plan on following up on several places for holding write-ins, however if anyone has suggestions I’m really eager to hear them. My problem has been finding places open later than 9pm with the right facilities for writing. Week night write-ins will need to start around 6:30 or 7pm and 2 hours seems much to short to get there, get comfy and get writing! I plan to hold weekly write-ins at my place as well, participants would be welcome to bring snacks and drinks (alcoholic or otherwise, it doesn’t matter!) and people could stay as late as they wanted. I’m a total night owl.

As far as the kick-off party is concerned it should be in the last week of October. In the past people have tried hosting kick-off parties on 10/31 that go past midnight and become their first write-in but its been my experience that people usually already have plans for Halloween and attendance is pretty bad. I’m open to anything though! I’m free every weeknight after 6pm and any time on the weekends. Feel free to voice ideas here or in a private message to me. With as many participants as Tulsa has (because its not just Tulsa, its BA, Bixby, Jenks, etc) I know it will be impossible to find days that work for EVERYONE but I definitely want to include as many people as possible!

Please remember to check our google calendar (in the regional heading!) often to make sure you don't miss out on any write ins!

I look forward to hearing from all of you!
