Hey, my name's Amy, and I'm a second-year English and Anthropology major at OSU attempting NaNo for the first time. I've thought about doing it for the past, oh, five years or so, but this is the first year I've actually committed myself to trying it. I'm going to be writing a fantasy novel that's been stewing in my head since middle school.

Any other OSU students out there and, if so, interested in organising an OSU kickoff? None of my friends that I've mentioned this to have ever heard of NaNo, and I'd love to meet some students who have!

First time on NaNo too. I am a OSU alum, however, so it would be difficult to join a group. Just wanted to show some support to a fellow writer and OSU student.

Fourth-time NaNoer, another OSU alum, hi. ^_^ I suggest putting up posters, especially in places like Kuhn (the Honors & Scholars house) and any of the living/learning program dorms (or whatever they're calling them now.) When I was in the John Glenn LLP at least a third of the residents considered themselves writers of one sort or another, and I doubt there was more than one person on the honors-sponsored trip to the National Conference of Undergraduate Research (or, for that matter, in the LeaderShape sub-group I was in) that hadn't tried writing a novel. I thought that was funny at the time: IIRC we all wrote poetry in high school, too.

I'm a PhD student at OSU who'll be participating in stealth mode. I'm afraid if my advisor knew what I was doing he would have a coronary. Can't have my advisor in the hospital until after I defend my dissertation.

My novel will actually be a slightly fictionalized account of my research process that happens to include much of my own research in the narrative. I figure that NaNoWriMo will allow me to both view my own research and writing process from a level of abstraction (I'll be writing about a fictionalized PhD student -- who happens to be based on myself -- in the third person) and to engage with my research in a slightly different mode. I hope that much of what I write will be transferable (though not without major modification) into my dissertation. If nothing else, I'll be able to massage some of my ideas in text.

It might be a NaNoWriMo cheat, but it's a project that somewhat excites me. And, I hope, forces me to produce gobs of writing (and thinking) that will move my work forward while my brain thinks I'm just playing around with a never-to-be-published novel.

Anyway, I don't think I'll be up for any NaNoWriMo support meetings: I live a long hike off and only come on campus when I teach. But know that I'm with you in spirit (or something). Then again, if you plan a meeting for a Tuesday or Thursday afternoon, I might be able to sneak over (wearing sunglasses and a fake mustache, perhaps).

My name is Malerie. I'm a first-year with no major yet (much too indecisive for such things). I've thought about doing this for a couple years but I always found out about it too late (at least in my opinion. It was always half way through November anyway). But anyway, I'd totally be interested in helping organize an OSU kickoff. None of my friends have heard of this either, and they'd mostly think I'm crazy for doing it since they're all engineering majors. :P

I am also working on my dissertation! I don't know how my adviser would feel if she heard, but I'm not teaching or working part-time so I usually have a few hours each day I can dedicate to non-dissertation work.

I'm not a student at OSU (I got my MA there several years ago); I moved here to live with my husband while I finish.

I would love to attend an OSU write-in. I will also welcome anyone to join me at Cup-O Joe's in Clintonville, I will post on which days I'll be there. I've decided to make that a writing destination because I can walk there.

I'm a second year grad student in science at OSU and this will be my fourth try at NaNo. I would be interested in attending a kickoff meeting.

I don't think I would be good at organizing a formal meeting, especially the parts involving people skills. I'd be willing to contribute supplies, though. It would also depend on the time, since I'm free mainly on weekends and (some) weekday evenings.

What kind of kickoff meeting were you thinking of? Last year, the Columbus kick-off was held at Kerouak, which is a block or two north of campus on High Street. But if we are going to hold it in a cafe or something, we might need reservations. A library on campus, I think, wouldn't be good for an actual meeting, since we'd be too loud. It might be good for a write-in, though, and I believe some OSU students did actually plan a write-in at one of the libraries last year. We could even have a kickoff outside, weather-permitting. For example, we could hold a meeting down by Mirror Lake in that amphitheater, if it's free, or on the Oval.

Aside from the kickoff, may I suggest Monday November 12th as a day for a possible write-in? We have it off.

Okay, I kept meaning to get on here and reply to all these, but midterms got in the way. Thank god I'm going to be done with those by the time Nano starts!

Now that we've gotten info about the Columbus area kick-off at Panera, though, I'm pretty sure I'll be going to that. I'm not sure I know much about organizing kickoff events, cause this is my first year and I'm not entirely sure of what they're supposed to be like, so I doubt I'd be much good at planning one myself. But 12 November sounds great for a write-in! I would definitely be up for that!

Great to hear from all of you, and hope your pre-Nano preparations (if you're making them) are going well!

'Allo--am currently an OSU undergrad in Earth Sciences, have already received my BA in English Literature and Creative Writing from OWU (I like to call it my Great Tour of Columbus Colleges.) This is my first Nano, so I'm a bit... overwhelmed?... at all the scheduling and massive organization that this involves. But I'd love to meet some other OSU Nano's at some point. I live a little ways off-campus, up in Clintonville, but can easily get to anywhere on campus at almost any point in the day. So keep me posted and good luck to all of you! :)

Hi there! Cup O'Joe's in Clintonville is also within walking distance for me, so maybe I will see you there sometime this month. :)

(Speaking of within walking distance, have you been to the vegan bakery just a ways down High St. from that Cup O'Joe's? They have the BEST muffins in the world. Too bad you can't really lounge around in there...)

I love that bakery. Their molasses cookies are wonderful.

Are you going to the kick-off?

As of right now, I'm planning on going, but I have 7+ hours of classes on Mondays (God, I hate labs), so it'll really depend on how much energy I have left... :-/

Molasses cookies? Must try those... Mmm...

If you want to carpool, let me know. And I am fine with only staying for a little while if you're weary and want to leave.

Hi everyone. I'm Stephanie and I'm a Japanese/English double major with a minor in Medieval and Renaissance Studies. I'm living in Drackett Tower this year (wooh north campus), and I'm a second-year senior (meaning I'm a senior but it's my second year in college hurray for post secondary credit). This is my first time participating in NaNoWriMo, but I've known about it for a few years. So is there going to be a meet up for something? Sorry, I guess I'm a bit confused. ^^

Yep, see the calendar feature or the Kickoff thread. It's tonight, 5-8pm at the Panera up at Crosswoods. I wish it wasn't so far north, but I'll be glad to meet some people who have done this before.

And kudos to you on all the post secondary credit; that's amazing to be a senior in only your second year!

Hi, Guess I'm the first post Kick off post. Well my roommate and I are both doing nano, and we both went to Panera, although we got in late. (Curses COTA) Anyway Campus write-ins sound great. I'm usually free most afternoons!

Hi everyone!

My name is Brittany and I live on the OSU campus (Haverfield on North Campus) and I am a first year with sopohmore standing. I am a humanities scholar and a Japanese major with a business minor. However, this is my first time doing NaNoWriMo. I would love to come into the write-ins! I'm the only one I know of that's doing NaNoWriMo of people I know, so I'm excited to meet new people who enjoy writing as much as I do!

Okay, Veteran's Day is swiftly approaching (12 November, next Monday!), and as Brian mentioned, we've got it off. Does anyone have any ideas for where we could have a write-in, or anyone other than me still interested in doing one?

Unfortunately, I think it's going to be too cold to use Browning Amphitheatre, which is too bad, because it's one of my favorite places to write. We could always just use SEL, or one of the other campus libraries, or maybe one of those new areas with the nice, comfy chairs in Central Classroom? I'm up for about anything, if anyone out there has ideas.

Hey all, I'm an OSU-recent-grad. I got my BA in Liberal Arts, aka English.

This is my first year, and I got started a little late (almost halfway through), so I'm having to make up for lost time. Is there a group or anything for OSU-ers?
