My hero gets a 15, so I think she's okay (and possibly slightly boring!)
My villain is a 22, so a little on the edge, but she is deliberately rather flambouyant, mostly because she's as mad with a capital M A and D. The main problem with her may be stopping her stealing the show.

Hmm. My MC comes out at 28, and I don't feel like I ticked that many buttons. He is a snarky orphan with a couple of skills and a saving the world complex though, so I suppose that's fair.

I can't face doing it for any of my previous novel characters, though. They're all 35+ers, I can just tell.

So far my main character is only 14 but that may increase as I write him more.

My main character is only a 13 - which confirms my fear that he's becoming a total bore. Hopefully bu November he'll be a bit more interesting.

My main is a 23, which I think I'm pretty happy with. She is plenty flawed, and that's part of the story, so I don't think the score's a problem.

i thought if you had a bad mary sue score your character wasn't flawed enough...
maybe I'm getting the wrong idea

To make everyone feel a bit better, Cloud Strife - possibly one of the most famous and flawed characters ever created for a game/movie - scores a whopping 62. So if your character is on the cusp, relax. It's all about context, and execution.

Ouch! Mine is 48!!

To be fair, the reason is that my MC is *meant* to be a completely typical chosen one. Great fighter prophesied to defeat the evil etc.. who then gets screwed over and banished to Earth. I don't think that it's that I tried to make the character too likeable. She's a bitch, and she's bitter because she's been kicked out of her home for saving the world, but because the story is meant to be light hearted, she's more curmudgeony than anything else.

It doesn't count if you're trying for a cliche, right?

I had to take it twice, so shocked was I by the results. First try? Six points. Second try, when I was very liberal with my scoring? Ten.

Is she too boring?

24. And I don't care. It's an interesting rubric, and it's informative, but the truth is that if you're writing a Hero's Journey (as I am), some Suedom is a part of the story itself. I mean, yes, my MC is the chosen one who can fulfill a prophecy. If you're going to DQ that plot, you're killing everything from Beowulf to Harry Potter (who would score very high on this test, as would Luke Skywalker, Frodo, King Arthur, etc., etc.) In short, make sure your character is real...but worrying too much about him/her being a Mary Sue is as bad as not worrying at all.

my main character is a 29. i sort of expected that, because she's me. =)

my second main character is 27 which sort of surprised me because he's not very interesting... i guess the fact that this is a quest type story and he's the "chosen one" put him up a bit. but what am i to do? i need a chosen one, and apparently poor stephen is it.

thanks for posting this test. it's kinda cool. i've run my favorite characters from my other novel through it and they failed miserably. but, honestly, i like them, and i don't care. =P

Johnny got a 9. I was expecting way more, but then I don't know everything about him yet. Might be his phobia of triangles keeping it down. ;) Yes, I really did say he has a phobia of triangles.

I like to think so. I've done cliche bashing before and broken the scale too. On purpose.

Oye... My character racked in a nice, whopping 44. xD Mary Sue alert! Bwoop bwoop bwoop!

I knew it anyway. :p I'm working hard on her, but it's hard to change a character I've worked on for so long. She's already several years old. :3

My MC is a six.. mostly because it's a he, I think. xD And because I haven't really fleshed him out yet. It'll likely go up for him as the story progresses.

Hmm, my first character came out around 20, but thats mainly because she has amnesia and a bad relationship with the rest of the world. Love her loads, but would NEVER be friends with her in real life.

I was surprised that my second character came out a 15, though she'd come out as more, but I'm planning to make her v. interesting for being really shy and quiet.

I got a twelve, but a lot of those questions were about stuff I haven't decided yet, life how he's going to manage to get out of dire life or death situations.

Quite glad though, I'm trying to make him anti Mary Sue, but I was afraid I was going too far the other way and he was going to be a 'look, my character's sooo not a gary-stu'!Gary stu

So first I got a 43 and I was like oh, crap. But then I realized it was because my character is literally and intentionally me, so I shouldn't get points for all the "dresses like you" things. So I went thorugh and got rid of those, and ended up with 23. I think that's okay. The funny things is, that most of the the things are really true of me... so apparently the real me is a bit Marr Sue! I'm going to do my other MC later.

My MC got a negative 3. So I guess even though she's in an ancient prophecy it's ok because she's not the hero. . . Now I just gotta make sure the minor hero character doesn't turn into a Mary Sue/

My Female MC rated a 14, which I think is pretty good. I'm not looking forward to seeing the score my "chosen one" gets... I suppose that the only good thing is that Kee's not old enough to angst much. Bein' a baby is good for something, I guess.

...hahahaha 78.
That's the highest I've seen so far on the boards here. If it's any relief at all, she's not the main character, and I'm going to kill her two thirds in. Does that help at all?

Now I'm worried.

Shannon earned me a respectable 15 points. I'm relatively impressed, considering I did this in her post enhanced state, so she's like a supergenius. Probably because in heart she's just a slightly wimpish 16 year old hypochondriac who's neither ugly or pretty, she's just normal. But I had to give her points for being excessively knowledgable and having aquired special abilities...

Oh my god, I'm writing the most boring MC ever. She got a 4.

To be fair though, many of the questions didn't seem to apply; they seemed to be more fantasy-oriented.

That was my problem too, actually. I got a 7 on one of my main characters and probably would get a 4 or 5 on the other if I went through it for her. The questions all seem to apply to three settings:

1) Modern day
2) Futuristic science fiction
3) Fantasy

I'm doing classic steampunk, which is none of the above, so about 80% of the questions just simply didn't apply.

MMC and FMC got 5 each. I've been thinking more about plot than the two of them, though.

I think they are the MCs. Huh.
