Hello! This is actually for my past Nano (2004-2006) that I am editing yet again as I query agents. I want to fix a few details.

I have a Catholic figure, Father Luis, who doesn't come across as adequately Hispanic. I know very little Spanish to lend him authenticity. I'm sure as heck not going to trust this to something like Babelfish.

I need one specific line translated into Spanish. Father Luis is speaking to a teenage girl, and the English version I have now is: May God bless and guard you and your animals.

Other than that, if anyone has experience with the Roman Catholic church, what other things in Spanish might a Father mutter under his breath or slip into speech? He does mostly speak English as a courtesy. I do have him saying "Dios" a few times when things surprise him, but any other little phrases would help, too.

Thank you kindly!

Hi!

I would translate it to: "Que Dios te bendiga y os proteja a ti y a tus animales". Also, besides saying Dios he can say Mi señor (My lord), I bet is how a father would say it (hadn't gone to church in ages). If something that he considers inmoral, a sin, or just anti-religious occurs he could say: "Que Dios nos coja confesados" which I can't translate word by word, but is more or less a wish that given any bad situation they've confessed to God before-hand(the saying is in plural always).

I really don't know what else to say ^^;;; other than even if he speaks in english most probably he'll pray in spanish. These two are the most common:

- Padre nuestro (Lord's Prayer):

Padre nuestro que estás en los Cielos
Santificado sea tu nombre
Venga a nosotros tu reino
Hágase tu voluntad en la Tierra como en el Cielo
Danos hoy nuestro pan de cada día
Perdona nuestras ofensas como también nosotros perdonamos a los que nos ofenden
No nos dejes caer en la tentación
Y líbranos del mal.
(amen)

-Credo (Creed):

Creo en Dios Padre Todopoderoso, creador del cielo y de la tierra.
Creo en Jesucristo, su único Hijo, nuestro Señor, que fue concebido por obra y gracia del Espíritu Santo;
Nació de Santa Virgen María ; padeció bajo el poder de Poncio Pilatos;
Fue crucificado, muerto y sepultado; descendió a los infiernos;
Al tercer día resucitó de entre los muertos; ascendió a los cielos;
Está sentado a la derecha de Dios Padre Todopoderoso, desde allí ha de venir a juzgar a los vivos y a los muertos.
Creo en el Espíritu Santo, la Santa Iglesia Católica, la Comunión de los Santos, el perdón de los pecados, la resurrección de los muertos y la vida eterna.

I hope this helps you ^^

When surprised, he could say "Ay Dios mío!" (Oh my God!). I'm not experienced in the Roman Catholic thing, but shout if you need anything else in Spanish.

As a Catholic myself, I feel that I should point out it is highly unlike a Catholic priest would say "Dios mio". The second commandment (You shall not take the name of the Lord in vain) is taken very seriously in the Catholic church, at least as I know it. He would not use the phrase "Dios mio" casually, at any rate.

The Hail Mary is another very common Catholic prayer. In Spanish:

Dios te salve, María, llena eres de gracia,
el Señor es contigo.
Bendita tú eres entre todas las mujeres,
y bendito es el fruto de tu vientre, Jesús.
Santa María, Madre de Dios,
ruega por nosotros, pecadores,
ahora y en la hora de nuestra muerte.
Amen

Hope it helps!

I realize the original question is quite old, however you should be careful about the kind of Spanish your priest speaks. From what I remember of my Spanish classes, only Spain uses a different verb-ending for plural you. If your priest is from Mexico or South America, he would probably just use the plural third person ending when he means "all of you."
