I've been going back and forth with BillPatt about a write-in for the Somerville/Bridgewater/Raritan/ area and all of its neighbors. It looks like we're going for Wednesdays, 7:00 pm at the Barnes and Noble in Bridgewater.

Nothing big planned. I figure we can all hang out in the cafe to start. We can write in 15 minute bursts with 5 minute breaks in between to check counts, get coffee, and rest your fingers.

(Yes I know I changed the time from my original plan in the PM...I think this time will be easier for those of us with Newark/New York commutes)

This is just one date and time that happened to be convenient and local for us. This isn't like "The Official CNJ Write-In" just because I started the topic. If someone else wants to do more for Somerset County, feel free to organize something. Just start a different thread to keep things nice and avoid confusion. :-)

I'll try to stop by on the 7th. I'm on crutches right now, so I'll be easy to spot!

Katie:

Is this going to be set up for every Wednesday during the month? Are you all meeting in the cafe--this is the Barnes and Noble near the Somerville Circle? The strip mall with the Pier One and Filene's? I just signed up for my first try at NaNoWriMo--going to be fun. Hope I can join up with you all on Wednesday. It's 11/7, right?

Thanks,
Writarie.

Yes. Every Wednesday writing in the cafe of the Barnes and Noble on the Somerville Circle. :)

I also regret to announce that I won't be there on the 7th due to a family thing (it was kinda up in the air before November. I wasn't sure if it would be Wednesday or Friday...but it's Wednesday so I'll be out of town). However the write-in is still on. There is a group of people who expressed interest and have said they plan to to go. So please go, drink coffee, mingle and write.

I feel awful about this and I know it looks bad on my part. But next week there are no vague plans going on and barring a life threatening emergency, I WILL make it.

I marked off 9 pm on the calendar but after attending the one at Menlo, I'd have to say "indefinite". I left after 2 hours at Menlo but I still would have liked to have stayed if I could (I felt I didn't have enough time). Some people stayed longer. Some left before I did.

I thought that worked out really well so the ending time is basically whenever you personally want it to end. Whatever works best for you and your schedule.

I went at 7, but now that I'm reading this I'm wondering if i was supposed to go at 9?
Gir.

Anyway, I was there at 7, and there was a group of people talking but no one was writing. I sat alone for about 5 minutes, then i left. I'm wondering if next week when this happens will someone have something that can signify nanowrimo? Like a print out of the typewriter logo or something... I don't like walking up to a group of people and saying "Hey are you all nanowrimoers?" because it really sounds like I'm speaking gibberish.

I'll make a note of it to bring a table tent or something next time if it makes things easier.

Confession time: Up until this year I've never actually attended write-ins (I worked nights last year) so I'm still working on getting the kinks out. The write in at Menlo this past Monday was my first and it was a learning experience. XD

I'm going to have to beg the general Wrimo population that you give it more than 5 minutes to find people. This is going back my recent experience at Menlo...since we're talking about an event where no one knows anybody it may be difficult to actually have things started by 7. By the time people get settled, buy a drink, snag a chair and all that good stuff, it could be 7:15 before the first words are typed. I was first to arrive at Menlo. If I left after waiting five minutes...ten minutes even...I would have missed out on a well attended write in. The fact that most of us have never met face-to-face (and that we're all most likely equally as shy about asking other people if they are Wrimos) complicates things further. That's why I'm changing the end time to "indefinite" so that you will have as much time as you want to write in spite of delays getting started.

But I will put up some identifying marker on the table next time (or wear the 2007 T-shirt if I can manage it) to make finding people as easy as possible.

hah, well I know I should have waited longer, but I started to doubt myself and wondered if it was at the borders. I couldn't make my mind write while I was sitting there wondering whether or not I should walk up to random people and ask. I didn't want to read anything because then I'd wind up buying it and reading instead of writing (I haven't touched a non-picture book or magazine since November started) I also don't drink coffee and don't really like tea, so really I was sitting there looking around, feeling kinda of dumb and worried...

It's ok though, next week

If you were at the right place, I probably saw you there, looking just as confused as you felt. I did finally find the group, and I know exactly what you mean about feeling awkward asking if it was the NaNo group. Luckly, it was.

It kind of made me want to make a teeshirt that said "Do you NaNo?" Heck, I think I might make one anyway.

Do you believe I got 1600 words written tonight...even though I talked for almost 2 hours?

NOTE: Although Wed will be "Get-Away Day" for all and sundry, I will be at barnes and Noble on the Somerville Circle for the NaNo Write-in.

Does anyone's hands hurt as much as mine do? Raking leaves all Saturday, followed by five straight hours of typing, then doing some chainsaw work has really messed up my hands.

I have to say, I have really, really enjoyed the writeins. If you were there, I am the bald fat old guy. In the first one, where we did almost no writing, one of the young (to me everyone is younger than I) writers described her plot, but could not figure out what to do with it. I felt the golden touch of the muse, and dropped two questions in the conversation. Then I sat back.

"ooooh!" she breathed, then made a note. I loved watching the animation come into her face. We discussed some of the mechanics of her story: "How does this happen? How do you resolve this conflict? Here's a ramification you might have missed." Yeah, no writing happened that first night. But there was a lot of thought, so necessary to generate the flood of words in the weeks to come.

The next week, I asked about the scene I suggested.

"I had so much fun writing it!" she said. And I look forward to reading it.

I really don't care how far behind you are. Come to the write in. I am almost ahead of the game, and I definitely will be by tomorrow night, so I will be happy to help as you talk out your plot. If not, well, I can alsways write.

See you there!

Bill, you can't be older than me ... I was at the Starbucks Sunday (Hamilton Square) this past sunday and found out I'm the same age as JerseyGirl's mother.

(smug grin) Got a higher word count than her too(/smug grin)

You bet I can believe it! This has been the most difficult Nanowrimo I've participated in, as number count goes.
I've been involved with a closing one hour south and as much as I've tried to let things go on that end, I keep getting dragged back. So my count is low and all I've done in my spare time is struggle. The words are not flowing in a steady, focused stream.

Of the 7k+ I have written, all of its from different fits and starts. Somebody help!! Oh, wait. Tomorrow's Thanksgiving.
One More Week. AAAHHHGGGGG!!!!

What? in the world happened to my comment?
I wanted to add that to my word count. That should indicate how well I'm not doing this year.

Bah. I should have totally read the forums. I would have come to these writing sessions, and beat the pants off of all of you in real-life word wars.

It's a shame that nobody in this thread has finished yet! Also a shame that next year I won't live in Somerset anymore - college life begins!

Some of us will still be there next week. And we don't bite. Much.
