One of my favorite forms of procrastination in the guise of "working on my novel" is to create lists of names and thus meet my characters that way. Here are a few of my favorite sites:
http://www.xtra-rant.com/gennames/
http://www.kleimo.com/random/name.cfm
http://www.namenerds.com/uucn/international/internframe.html
This one is fun, but you have to provide the name:

Hope it helps! :)

If I'm a two-time novelist, does that mean I've cheated on my first novel?

Real procrastinators should Google on "Schenectady Steeple" ... This is a very responsive service run by a little old lady who helps people desperate for a plot (on the Lynn Abbey website). Some of the secondary hits lead to resource pages with all kinds of writing aids, too.

Cool! Thanks I have already stumbled on a few character names so far. I thought about the phone book trick, but I will check these sites out.

I tried the Schenectady Steeple thing, but she told me to go away! What's up with that?

You need to answer the question, not just click on the button. Also, the "try again" option is broken, but hitting your browser's "refresh" button will get the little old lady to let loose another idea.

Hi there,
Someone, I don't remember who, gave me this great idea for a name generator - check out your spam e-mail for interesting names. If nothing else, it gives you something useful to do with those annoying e-mails!
