Anyone else writing light fantasy?
I don't know if there's such a thing, but I call it light fantasy, because I don't know what else to call it.
By light fantasy I mean a fantasy story with very few fantasy elements.
I am writing character driven, both my NaNoWriMo project, and my other novel project, which takes place in the same world.
It's a mix of fantasy and sci fi, a mix of our world as it looks now, as it might look in a future (or a future parallell world) and as it looked like during 1700-1800.
I have some elements of fantasy, ESP abilities and such, but other than that, it's no fantasy elements, no high fantasy or epic fantasy elements, such as dragons or the like.
There are sorcerers/magicians, but that's about it.
Of course the world has its own history, mythology, religion and society - and there's quite a lot of politics in the world as well, on different levels.
I tend to write character driven, since I find that most interesting, and so most of the story takes place on the relation level, the relation to the self, to others, to friends, enemies, lovers.

My novel is similar - the biggest magic in my story is a crystal that serves as a talisman and psychic focal point. I have a sect of people that are highly trained shaman/storyteller figures, but that's all happened in reality, so I don't consider that fantasy. More mysticism than anything else.
Characters are more fun, anyway. :)

I believe it's called 'low' fantasy.
And it's incredibly fun and amazing and I'm writing it this NaNo.
Cheers! Let's all congregate here because a lot of other threads, don't have anything useful for us...

I'm considering writing something a bit low fantasy myself. (Damn my sister and her meddling ways! Damn her!!!! I was going to write about the Bastard Heir of Dernholm, but then my mum reminded me that I'd tried that a few months ago and wound up hating it with a passion. Dammit...)
It's a bit sci-fi, and a bit fantasy - a future when mankind has discovered their innate powers and discovered ways to train them in specific ways, and spread into the stars using a combination of high science and sorcery. It's actually mankind's SECOND foray into the stars - the first time, they settled a few relatively nearby worlds, and then a cosmic storm forced most of humanity to fall back to Earth, which was then engulfed by a cosmic storm for almost four hundred years. Returning to the skies, there's something out there, hiding and biding its time on a backwater planet. Something THEY created...
Can I buddy you?

My story is the same way. It's a remake of a fairy tale but In mondern time. I have the fairygod mothers. and I have a little magic going on if you read between the lines. Like weird happenings and what not. I'm not even sure if you'd call it fantasy, though.

Ooh me! Well if I ever outline it and write it and don't change me mind.
I'm intending on my story mostly being character/relationship-driven. It's not quite romance because it's not happy ever after (yet). Mostly there is tension and angst. I have a normal woman in a normal village but then this mysterious brother and sister move next door in search of a family heirloom thing, which is not magical but would hold power for them.
The fantasy element is that the brother and sister are sort of vampires, but pyschic vampires rather than blood sucking but they are over 100 years old and as hot as ever. I'm thinking they may be more to the world than just psychic vampires, like sort of werewolves etc. but that's for another time.
So yes. Mostly I'm aiming at the coming of age of the FMC, and the angsty goodness between her and the MMC but it wouldn't quite be the same if he wasn't a manipulative vampire lol.

Tolly: if you mean me, yes, of course you can buddy me.
In fact anyone can, I don't have many buddies so far.
It'll begin tomorrow, scary!
But I'm already qute familiar with my world. It's just that I don't know the characters. There's a whole new set of characters.
And I'm used to write with male MC. Now I'll try with a female one. That's odd as well.
Isn't "Magic realism" something that takes place in our world, and with magics in it?
I don't really know where my world is, it might be a parallell world, or another universe... anyways it's not that different from ours.
Oh, I guess you're right. It's called "Low fantasy". I just checked it out at Wikipedia. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Low_fantasy
So, I'm writing Low Fantasy with a touch of Romantic Fantasy in it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romantic_fantasy

Found you!
Didn't even know there was a technical name for this, so I'm excited to find a group I'm more in tune with than the general fantasy genre. I was reading over there and kept thinking - this is going to drive me crazy and there's no way I'll be able to post over here! So, here I am.
My story is set in a sort of fantasy world, but you could also say it is just a medieval world. The only magic is in a form of healing (although the main bad guy may turn out to have some sort of magical power. We'll see.) I'm not even sure we'll see any elves or dwarves or anything like that. So, very "low fantasy!"
Can't wait to see what comes from this forum!

I'm a character-driven person too! I tend to write about real historical periods, add in some characters and just a little magic, and see how I change history!
It's fun and very creative compared to traditional fantasy. Not a quest in site...

I just looked over the Low Fantasy page at Wikipedia and found... that fits my story to a tee. There's magic, for sure, and some non-human beings - werewolves, vampires, faeries and sprites - but the focus of the story is on a relatively ordinary person just doing his job - which certainly doesn't involve any quests. It's a contempory fantasy and there's definitely not anything "pure" about the main character's goodness. In the end, he's going to decide that things are better off - for him and in general - if he lets the real culprit escape (I'm crossing genre with mystery a bit).

My story falls into the low/urban/contemporary fantasy genre, or at least I think it does. The story is set in a 'current day' setting (a small town somewhere in Rhode Island), I'm trying my best not to reference anything specific to the timeframe. Pop culture gets old pretty quickly and who knows how long it'll take me to revise it! ^_~ *grin*
I figure it counts as 'low' fantasy because the only magic in the world is intrinsic to/sourced from the Veil between the living and the dead. Humans can't access the magic directly (only Hounds and Hinds can tap into the Veil) and vola... you have a fantasy story with a lot of fantasy and very little magic.
Not that Jon's complaining mind you, dealing with the Hounds is bad enough without having to play Harry Potter. ((HEY!)) Well, okay, he's more of a Ron or a Cedric (only less popular). ((Much better.)) You're a strange little fictive, you know that? ((Sticks and stones, sticks and stones...))
