As requested, here's the post in a new thread

Can I recommend for the next day-time write-in the Cafe at the State Library?
Its generally quiet, huge windows with plenty of light (sorry to the Vampires), they have tea, coffee, drinks and nibbles to buy, lots of power points as a lot of people bring in their laptops to eat and study, and its very public.
I propose Saturday 10th.... no I don't. Christmas pageant. Its going to be nuts in there, you'll never get in, let alone a park.
I re-propose Sunday 11th from about 11am onwards, maybe earlier, depending on how early people get out of bed on a Sunday.
Go in through the North Tce entrance, and keep walking forward (stop when you hit the wall). Its downstairs.
Anyone else with me?

Unofficial and other write-ins/meet-ups

I'm going to change this thread to an open one for those that want to organise their own write-ins and meet-ups outside of the ones that Christina and I will be organising. This thread is to keep things neat and tidy and so you can find all your fellow wrimos organised events and not be confused as to who is organising what.
You're more than welcome to attend these and the official write-ins/meet-ups. The is no obligation for which you choose, it is up to you.
I only have one request to those organising, please organise your write-ins/meet-ups so they are on at a different day/time of day to the official write-ins/meet-ups so those that want to attend both don't have to choose one over the other.

Sounds appealing....:)

Do they have wireless internet available there? There are times when I am writing that I might need to looking something up so wireless internet is handy, although not essential - especially as one could duck into the library to look something up if required..:)

While not wanting to tread on any ML toes, I have to ask, what difference does it make if someone else organises a write-in at the same time? I think having a choice is not a bad thing. It's not like they are competing for business or something. Heck, I wouldn't mind if there were an alternative to the University write-in this weekend. One can never have too many options. My opinion, anyway, which could be moot as no one has yet organised a conflicting write-in.

There is a slight difference and it is truly something of a matter of opinion. Adelaideans are a diverse bunch and giving them diverse options would be the greatest treat. Being able to choose one over another isn't really a valuable choice, however being able to choose Saturday Vs. Sunday, or both or none and not to mention day Vs. night is a great choice. I'm also disinclined to promote people choosing; I'm not a fan of cliques for the simple reason someone is always excluded, I will admit I have excluded and been excluded in the past, neither is pretty. I would rather a big happy family of us odd, crazed writers.
I find that the more options people have the greater the enjoyment to be had by all. Universities aren't for some whilst cafe's aren't for others; it makes us who we are. If there is no other option but to make them on at the same time and the same day then so be it, but I would rather all of us, including those organising, would have the opportunity to attend many in one weekend if that is what we choose.

It's not on at the same time. Saturday the 3rd and Sunday the 11th are two different days.

I've posted. I'm going to be there. If people want to join me, come along. Official or not, or with TPTB's blessing, either way I'm going to be at the library writing. If I have company it makes it all the more better. I hope people do turn up.

I know last year that there were a lot of write-in's organised by many different people. I found the system worked well.

"I'm also disinclined to promote people choosing;"

I thought this group was meant to be a democracy, even more of an organised anarchy.

I realise that it isn't at the same time. I was simply responding to Dragon Red's reply about the possibility of them running concurrently. I'm in no way discouraging you from organising a write-in/meet-up, I am simply hoping to remove any ambiguity about who is organising what. Organised anarchy is all we can hope for. :-)

"I'm also disinclined to promote people choosing;"
This is not the full context. I'm sorry if you mis-read it as something against your write-in and people attending. Not my intention. I'm simply trying to put forth that the option to be more social and mix with as many Wrimos as possible on as many days as possible is better than forming a tight clique which you stick to adamantly, unless that is your personal preference. Put simply, one Saturday write-in and one Sunday write-in is better than two Saturday/Sunday write-ins at the same time.
Last year there were several write-ins organised by other Wrimos at various locations. I remember that this was to meet a day/time need. It was a great system, it gave many Wrimos the choice of Saturday or Sunday. I remember some Wrimos attended both.

I will say this now, because at the moment it is still a week off, but Christina and I will probably organise something again at the uni (if people want it) for Saturday the 10th simply because it is out of the way of the pageant, albeit still with some chaos and it gives Saturday people an option.

Hopefully we can work together on this.

Interesting thread this. I always preferred the Fringe to the Festival anyway,

I seem to remember last year there being concurrent write-ins at the same time. I think the one I went to was in the Oconnel St Bakery, which was noisy and sociable and wonderful, but which some people couldn't come to because of the public place/pub down the road/security issues. There was also another one at the Uni or somewhere. I presume people went to both for different reasons and they were both good options.

Not everyone's a uni student, Some work full time, some have families, some have days free, some can go out by themselves and stay up all night. Some like quietness, some enjoy noise and conversation. Some want to just sit and write, some are really doing it to be sociable.

I remember doing NANO when nobody came to any meet-ups, there were no write-ins and nobody was interested in organising anything. One of the great things about it now is that there are a whole lot of people with the motivation and enthusiasm to make the event rich and diverse, meeting more than one set of needs.

Enjoy it, make the most of it. It's precious.

Heya,

I just wanted to throw my oar in here about times that I'm free and to see if anyone else is at the same times. I'm not working right now, so all weekdays are usually good, providing something with my boyfriend's daughter doesn't come up. Hopefully I can make it on Sunday the 11th, though, too.

Before we go thinking up all manner of great places to meet up (hey, we could have one every evening! There are 30 days in November)
Where do people find it the best to go? It the city more convenient? Just out of the city, like North Adelaide or Unley (both with easy, free parking, and relatively central) or are there more people to one end of Adelaide? Are laptops to be widely used and do we need to consider power points?
I had a yearning to go writing down at the beach this year. Although given the weather, maybe leave it a week or so. But there are some great cafes down at Glenelg, the tram is good for public transport, and the atmosphere would be refreshing.
Up in the Hills might also be good for some fresh country air.
If people want to suggest places, those of us who want an alternative meeting place and time can take our pick from the lists.
Everest Cafe on Rundle st is nice, and relatively quiet unlike Bonjiournos (?sp)
OConnell st Bakery has a nice studious student feel to it, although there aren't any toilets, you have to go to the pub two doors down, and the drunks come in late in the evenings.

Ahhh... now I understand your meaning. I had to agree with Chooky initially; it sounded like you wanted ONE WAY and ONE WAY ONLY. Now I understand you to mean that people should pick and choose events and the more choice, the better.

People will flourish with lots of variety and choice. Yay!

OK, so I just logged on to check when the first write in was (been very lazy this week Nano wise and thought it might be tomorrow) and missed todays. Bugger. So... Chooky, I would love to join you next weekend - I plan to be there!

I'm happy with whatever venue is tee'd up, and duly promise to check the forums more often to ensure I don't miss one like I did today! I promise to also try to get to wherever it is on time and in an inspired mood (failing that, you all keep mentioning red frogs, so they'll be my back up plan).

I'm glad PeterPan reminded me about O'Connell Street Bakery as I would love us to do another late night meetup there like we did last year as I knocked out a whopper of a word count that night! Perhaps on the last weekend in November - Fridayish so we can recover on Saturdayish. Never mind... we have weeks for that yet! For now, I am hanging for next Sunday.

Hope the other write-in went well for everyone. Looks like quite a few word counts improved as a result.

Hope to see everyone on Sunday for the write-in at the Library.

As for the suggestions on places to meet - sorry to bring the negative without also bringing the positive, but I'd really rather not go to the Bakery for an all-night write-in, particularly on a weekend night. I don't really fancy going to a place where the only toilets are in a neighbouring pub, and you have to walk through a crowd of drunk people to get there. Maybe we could try and find a cafe in the city that's open all hours, that has toilets and is a little isolated. Or, we could try a more private area, maybe again at the Uni or the writer's centre or a community hall, if we could swing it?

x2.

Dragon and Chooky, I wouldn't take this to heart, I doubt the official meets are going to stamp out others' ideas. But I must agree, it's kinda pro-social to be able to go to both, rather than having to choose. If Adelaide had a hundred *active* members who wanted to meet up then of course it'd be a neccessity, but I love meeting fellow writers and if the group got split in half for WriteIns it'd be a bit of a shame.

As for locations, I say we all contribute our ideas as they come to us. I love the hills, next time I'm up there I'll suss out a suitable venue in Hahndorf. There's plenty of nice places up there, I'm sure they'd make us welcome.

Anyone know of a good cafe/library/etc overlooking the beach? That'd be a classy change of scenery.

I know the MacDonald's at Glenelg has a nice veranda with tables, and its one with a McCafe, so if nothing else is suggested that might be a good place. I know, its not classy by any stretch of the imagination.
It's been a while since I went down to Glenelg. Maybe avoid that new Magic Mountain (I still say, bring back the huge dog turd) and all its screaming noisy kids. I'll go looking in the white pages, see what that shows.

As for Hahndorf, there are so many fantastic places. Denise and I seem to live up there. Hopefully Red Dragon can give us some ideas about this, being a local. There's a lovely cafe in the middle of the main street by the creek. Can't remember what its called, but they had a fireplace, and some lovely coffee.
Alternatively there is a bakery with a large eating area just around the corner from the main street. Again, the name escapes me, and I'll get back on that one.

If I was able to make a Write-in, it would have to be somewhere with a power supply. The battery in my laptop died a while ago and can only operate from mains power these days.

Oh dear - laptop batteries! My poor Lappy was like that for awhile, he barely had 15 minutes of battery even when he was fully charged - and that was only if you didn't try to boot him up without mains power, because he never made it if you tried that.
Thankfully, I got a new battery just before Nano - but I definitely know and feel your pain!!!

Aah, that blows! Still though, for a laptop battery, it's had a great run so far!

Have you tried ebay, or some of the boutique computer stores? You might get lucky...

Eep! Somehow I missed this post when it was put up originally!

As for Hahndorf, yes, there are lots of eateries up there and lovely atmosphere. The Old Mill has free wireless internet should anyone require access to the web while writing. They also have menu meals as well as a buffet(all you can eat) lunch and dinner available.

Hey I was wondering if there's anyone interested in having a write in in the fleiruieu penninsula area, around Strathalbyn, Milang, Langhorne Creek, Meadows, Ashbourne area? I wish I could make it to Adelaide but unfortunatley my mum will not drive me.

Sunday 11th....Rememberence Day...is the State Library going to be open?
If I'm allowed to come (probably will with my Mum or Dad) then I'll be late, I'm wanted at the Salisbury RSL at 11 and there's no escaping it.

As for the suggestion of a Strath meetup...you could probably get from Strath to at least Salisbury and the library there on the train - this is according to my mum though; I have no idea about the trains, and form what I hear they're pretty unreliable. I was tihnking maybe Tea Tree Gully Library - there's a WiFi spot there, and computers available (you have to pre-book though) but that can only be a day one and I don't tihnk they're open Sundays.

Maybe we could see if we can organise weekend meetups? Saturdays would be preferable to Sundays though, because a lot of places are closed or close early on a Sunday.

Yeah, coming home from work through town yesterday I realised that those crosses where there for a reason.
There's no reason the State Library should be closed, it may be a little busier than expected. I realise that might cause problems for those who are driving in and need a car park. Public transport should still be fine, maybe delayed for a moment or two.
For those who need to know for parents who are picking them up, it closes around 3.30-4pm (well, they start giving the 'we're packing up so we want you to leave' signs from about 3pm onwards).

Details are: Sunday 11th November from 11am to close (3:30-4pm)
State Library Cafe- downstairs, just through the main entrance. North Tce, Adelaide.
BYO Laptop, Power cables and writing implements. There are power points to use, and there should be at least one power board with us on the day.
Food and drink available from the cafe.

Word of advice, check the cheesecake before eating it. A friend of ours had a bad experience there where the cake had been there for a day too long.

(Short-time lurker, first-time poster. Waaaaaaaaaaaah)

Oh, sweet! I'm working Saturday so this'll do me fine. As long as nothing comes up, I reckon I can make it to this meet-up. I'll be there with bells on. Well. Maybe not the bells.
