I thought I'd start a thread for this.
It is common for folks to form an online chat "room" via one of the instant messaging programs. They either form impromtu or they are scheduled ahead of time.
Here are my usernames:
AIM - paulaoff
ICQ - 311815655
MSN - paulaoffutt@charter.net
Yahoo - holyrollerette
I use a program called Trillian so I have all four of them up at the same time within one program.
One person decides to open the chat room and then "invites" the others as they come online. The beautiful thing with this is that you don't have to have all these people in your "buddies" list. They are visible to you (and you to them) only in the chat room.
There's also Bravenet java chatrooms which are free but the ads and the java script can bog down slower computers.
In the online rooms, there's usually Word Wars. This is where everyone agrees on a set amount of time (say, 10 minutes or even 30). Someone is the time keeper and at the end of the time, everyone posts their word counts. Another type of Word War is to agree to an amount of words (say, 1000) and everyone races toward it. During either version, it is quiet in the room so that those participating are not distracted.
So, there you have it. I have no life and sit here at the computer almost all day (I am rarely online before 10am) and most of the night. So if you see me online, just tap on my shoulder. :-D

Dearest Holyroller,
I have a bizarre schedule as I travel quite a bit. This is my first shot at this and I would love the help and encouragement from more "seasoned" pro's.
I am nearly gone all week and only home on a couple weekends a month theses days, but I would like to meet some of the Asheville folk sometime. I'm about to turn into a slug I am so tired right now but I made 1755 by midnite Nov 1!
Now, where do I put my word count?
As soon as I hit "send" I'll have figured it out, but if you don't mind helping me out w/that info I'd be a might bit grateful.
I do not speak in acronyms or know the lingo of chat rooms etc but here's my contact info and I would appreciate any support or provide support as well!:
fearlessreader.1@gmail.com and have just "set up" (yeah, right) windows live messenger but I haven't figured that one out either.....
I also have a toll free number if there is going to be a meet-up, please let me know and if I am anywhere near NC (I live in Winston-Salem) Just give me a call and opt for "Find Me"
Thanks for being there.......
You do have a life!
Be Well!

As for where to put your word count, go to the top of any page within the nanowrimo.org website.
You'll see two rows of links. The second row deals with your part of the site.
Click the "Edit Profile" link.
Next, click "Author info" in profile section main window.
Most of the way down, you'll see a section for "Novel info". In that area will be a place to enter in your word count.
And there ya go!

I have several (SEVERAL!) IDs...My main nanowrimo IDs are listed in my signature.
I use trillian, too! It is a little wonky. (WONKY!) sometimes, so you never know what service is going to be working. *sigh*
I'll be on off and on tonight. Feel free to message me!
