Well, the first day of results have been tallied, and as expected by everyone except those silly people in SLC, Elsewhere has come out ahead. And that's /without/ a maxed wordcount for the day by any of our members.
So... rejoice, Elsewhere! We're showing our true colors. And they're very wordy ones!

I wouldn't call them hostilities really... at it's heart, this is just a friendly competition. It spurs people on to higher wordcounts, and everyone wins.
And to make it clear: This is ALL in the spirit of fun. If I see anyone crossing the line into true nastiness, I /will/ be reporting their comments to the forum admins. Play nice people. Razzing and general smacktalk are okay, but no personal attacks, etc. I believe you're all adult enough to know the difference.

You guys, they were just barely ahead of us at midnight and the web site was so slow yesterday that by the time I finally got my word count updated each time, it had gone up more. No wonder we had so many people without any words yet -- and now I know of at least three of us that didn't update from zero. And they stil think they're ahead. Ha ha ha! We'll bury those Elsewheres in words this year!

Newbie question here:
What exactly does Elsewhere mean? Is that all the places that don't have their own Utah:: subgroup? Or is it everywhere except Salt Lake City? And does SLC refer only to the area inside the city limits? I affiliated with the SLC region because it was the closest one to West Jordan. Do I really belong in Elsewhere?

Yes.
And I think you just affiliate with the one that's closest. I'm in Millcreek, not actual Salt Lake, but I figure Salt Lake is what I use for my mailing address and if there's any meetups, it's the area I'd be able to get to. (Assuming my schedule ever works out, that is...)

i'm in ogden and i belong to elsewhere and ogden forums however i pretty much only participate in the salt lake forum because 1) i actually know some people and 2) they don't always flake out when we make plans. :) so anyway, i'm not from salt lake but the salt lake forums rock!!
and my comment about hostilites was mostly sarcasm :)

The way I understood it, the groupings for the challenge were Salt Lake County (even though the group says city) and not Salt Lake County, so West Jordan would still be in the SLC group. I'm a few blocks north of West Jordan.

Excuse me, but why are you trying to "rally the troops" of Elsewheres from the SLC forum? The WE you are referring to in this forum are Salt Lake Valley residents. And WE are going to continue kicking your butts in the word war this year.
And yes, I know some of you Elsewhere stragglers read our superior forums instead of/along with your own. Why, there are even more posts and words in our forums than in yours. Just imagine if the forum word counts were added to our word counts, how much further ahead of you we would be than we already are....

Pfft. So you've pulled ahead again briefly. We're hot on your heels, and we'll pass you yet. We have a stronger late-month performance than SLC, judging by last year's stats. (Which are up at http://devel.kydance.net/nanowrimo/wordwar_2006.php, by the way...)
So just keep gloating. You're going to wake up in week three or four, and find that we've got an insurmountable lead.

Is it just me, or does it look like our friends in SL are slowing down now that they have a few over the finish line. It also appears that there are a few more Wrimos over the "bar of doom" on the elsewhere side. This all seems to suggest that when SL's big writers are done, elsewhere will still be going strong while SL will slow to a snail's crawl. Not so smart wasting all your energy at the beginning, because the final sprint will be ours!
