Leicester Casuals writing group

For those of you who have enjoyed the camaraderie of hanging around with fellow writers, why let it end? We have an informal group that meets up about once a month, called the Leicester Casuals. We chat about what we’re working on, play word games and do writing exercises.

We have a quiet forum at: http://leicestercasuals.ipbfree.com/index.php?act=idx and our next meeting will be in January. Let us know at nanoleicester@yahoo.co.uk if you want us to send you a reminder email when the date and venue are confirmed.

Otherwise, we hope that you are planning on coming back again for another challenge. Happy writing!

TGIO Party: Sunday 7 Dec 2pm

Well here we are in the last few hours of NaNoWriMo. Some of you have already finished, and some of you are still running to the wire. A few others have written but may not reach 50,000 before midnight. And that’s okay. The most important thing is that you have tried.

Actually, the most important thing is to celebrate everything we’ve accomplished!

Our Leicester TGIO party (thank goodness it’s over) will be taking place on:
Sunday, 7 December, 2pm-4pm
at the new Coffee Republic on Granby Street

Bring along a snippet to read, if you want to share, either on a print out or your laptop. There are NaNoWriMo stickers for everyone – and plenty of other writers to share your good and bad experiences over the month.

Details:
TGIO Party
Date: Sunday, 7 December
Time: 2.00pm until 4.00pm
Location:
Coffee Republic
20-22 Granby Street
Leicester LE1 1DE
Map: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=LE1+1DE

It would be good to get an idea of numbers, so if you can, drop a line on the NaNo forums or email nanoleicester@yahoo.co.uk. But if you haven’t RSVP’d, don’t panic, just come on down if you can.

Online write-in

Okay, people, I was thinking it'd be a good idea in the last week to have an online write-in, so we can really push through and hopefully hit that 50K early (or whatever amended goal you might have) and at the same time have some fun and get together without having to mess around with travelling all over the place.

So if anyone's interested, we're thinking of having it every evening at 9pm til probably 10:30 ish, or whenever people want to keep going til, drop-in, drop-out style. That'll be every night this week. Either me or Tricia or both will be there between those times every evening til the end of November.

In terms of location, Tricia suggested we hi-jack this: http://england.chatnano.net/index.html. It's empty pretty much, so go check it out in advance if you want. It'll automatically assign you a name, which you can change by clicking on it.

So hopefully I'll see you there.

Though this is being organised by the Leicester MLs, I thought I'd copy it to the England :: Elsewhere forums too - you guys are all welcome to join us!
Stuck?

Everyone gets to a point in their novel where the words just don't seem to want to flow. This is perhaps a little late in the month to post this thread, but better late than never.

I just wanted to reiterate that if anyone is having trouble with their novel, wants a bit of a kick start, or has run out of enthusiasm, me and Tricia are very happy to help.

At this time of the moth (oops, month), most of us have got past the half-way mark and are pushing for the finish line, but it's not always that easy. A few days ago I got really stuck, and wrote hardly anything on my main story. In fact, I cheated on my novel (like Meg Cabot told us not to do in last week's pep talk) by turning a dream I had into a story (which is now 3500 words long). But I kept writing, a word at a time, a sentence at a time, and then, last night, I checked my wordcount.

28,784.

Now, to everyone else, that number is utterly meaningless, until I tell you that last year, during the whole of November, I got as far as 28,296 words. I'd overtaken it without even realising. And okay, I'm still perpetually about a day behind, but I'm getting there, even though every sentence is a push, even though I'm wallowing in a bit of the plot where not much happens.

On Sunday at the write-in, I used one of the seed cards, or rather, since Tricia had forgotten to bring them, she made one up for me. I asked for an obstance: she told me that a bridge was out. Convenient, since my characters were travelling. I didn't write that scene on Sunday, but I knew what was going to happen. I used the broken bridge to bring a new character into the equation, and with him, more questions and conflicts.

If you're stuck, why not do the same? Change something, throw something new into the pot that forces your characters to act in a particular way. Get a character drunk, or all of them - or use person Q, who already is drunk. Plot problem? Setting problem? Character problem? Don't suffer in silence! No! Do not! Shout out, say, "I am stuck! Please help!" and we shall. Type that in capitals if it helps you vent your frustration (and don't I know how frustrating being stuck is!)

The whole point of NaNoWriMo as a worldwide event is for support. There are thousands of writers all writing towards the same goal at the same time. We know what you're going through. It's difficult, it's creatively draining, it makes us want to ask "why?" But writing solo during NaNo is just pointless.

Let me tell you something. Last year, I was new to Leicester, I'd never lived away from my parents before and I'd never completed a novel before. When I went to the first NaNo meeting all those months ago, on October 31st 2007, I didn't have the confidence I now have. I was going into a strange city on my own to meet people I'd only ever contacted on the internet before. The people I met there were wonderful, friendly, welcoming people, who understood what I felt when I had writers' block, or when I had to kill a character I liked. Now, as happens, some people I met in that first meeting I never saw again, but others, like Tricia, therekinator and Tired_Feather, I kept in touch with, not just during NaNo but during the rest of the year, and we celebrated each other's victories and sympathised with each other's pains.

A year later, I'm still a writer, I'm still a student, and I still haven't had a proper hair cut, but I'm still here, and even though I failed last year, I knew I couldn't let it go there, and never know if I could do it, if I could write 50K words in 30 days. So I tried again. It's not been easy, but then, it never is.

I keep pushing. I don't give up. And neither should you. If you do, how will you ever know what you can really achieve?

So write, my Leicesterite friends, even if it costs a fortune in coffee, even if it takes an hour to write a word, even if you're so far behind you can't see how you could possibly reach 50K by the 30th.

Write, because how much more is 10,000 than 9,999?
One word, Leicesterites.
One single word.

But it makes the world of difference.
----------

Europe :: England :: Leicester

Back up right now - this means you!

Just a friendly public service announcement reminding everyone to back up their files. I find it works really well to save my document as a different name every day, and today's panic attack is a good reason why. When I opened my file tonight, my fonts were all wacky and things were not where they were supposed to be for who knows what reason. My document had eaten itself and burped it out in various ways. I only paniced a little, because I had yesterday's version. I was able to copy and paste the 500 or so words I'd done this morning, saving myself losing all those precious words. I also had the files saved on two different computers as well as a memory stick. If you don't have any peripherals or extra computers lying around, email the files to any webmail system that you don't download to your computer, like yahoo or gmail. With the massive amounts of storage they allow you now, you can keep those files online indefinitely until you know you don't need them.

So, please, go back up right now. I've known too many people lose their work and not be able to verify their winning Nano, not to mention the hundreds of work hours lost on corrupted files over the years. Go back up now!

Don't forget to check your time zone

As the word count validator is preparing itself across the site, I wanted to remind you to check your time zone - if it is set incorrectly, the winner validation may disappear too early and all your green bar efforts will never turn to purple!

To set the time zone, users should go to My NaNoWriMo-->Edit user
settings--> Locale settings/Time Zone-->select the current day and time
from the drop down menu. The times are listed in military format so if it is 7 PM on Friday, select "Friday, November 21, 2008 19:00."

I noticed mine was an hour off, which might have been because the US clocks changed during November, while ours (sensibly ;) changed in October. So, make sure and check yours, and validate before 11:59:59pm on the 30th. You don't want to miss out on winning after all your 50,000 words of hard work.

The validator and ability to claim your winningness should be live from noon on the 25th, or thereabouts.
Person Q

For those of you not at Sunday's mid-month write-in, we decided to have a communal Leicester character that everyone can write into their novels, should they wish. This communal character is collectively known as Person Q, because his or her name must begin with the letter Q. Here are the other traits we decided upon:

~ unspecified gender
~ friendly
~ loyal
~ heroic
~ drunk
~ has large brown eyes
~ has a scar in the shape of a dolphin
~ has knobbly knees that tend to shake (perhaps due to being drunk?)
~ wears a cape
~ wears warn, red colours
~ has a squeaky voice

So, feel free to put Person Q into your novel. I was imagining the scene where I'd introduce my novel's version of person Q. Her friend Ferrin would introduce her to my MC, Blaze, who is an immortal, as Quistis. What follows is what I then imagined the scene would unfold as. (The story is written first person from Blaze's POV)

.

I looked up to the ceiling. "Are you kidding?" I asked. "You can't call person Q that, there's already a Quistis in FF seven. Go back and think of something better."

"What are you talking about?" Ferrin asked, confusion obvious in his voice.

"I'm not talking to you," I told him. "I'm talking to the author, who should just go the Rinkworks Name Generator and sort out a better name."

Then the author took my excellent advice and did that, and the scene began again with an actually good, not previously used in a video game, name.

"This is Querid," Ferrin said, sounding a little confused. "What just happened?" he asked.

"Nothing," I replied, hoping Ferrin hadn't noticed the author's nonsense. "You were saying?"

.

Needless to say, when I finally reach that part of the story, that will not be how things go. Blaze is not supposed to be able to break the fourth wall. Only Fate, another immortal, has that ability. But that's another story.

So if you write person Q into your novel, let us know and post the relevant scene here. It'll be interesting to see what variety of characters people come up with.

This might bring a smile to your face

A man goes to see the Doctor...

Man: Doctor, I cant stop singing the green green grass of home.

Doctor: Hmmm, sounds like you have Tom Jones Syndrome.

Man: That sounds bad, is it rare?

Doctor: Its not unusual...

Made me laugh anyway.
Morning all!

Well here we are, back on NaNo. I hope there are plenty of Leicesterites this year. I'm your friendly co-ML (Tricia's really in charge, but I beat her to it, heh heh heh)

I'm Anezka, I write fantasy and this year I'm aiming to complete the novel I began last year. Outside of writing, I'm an archaeology and ancient history student at Leicester university, so hopefully I'll see some fellow NaNo-ers around campus. I also like playing computer games and eating chocolate.

Keep an eye out for posters around town and on campus, and I hope to meet you all soon at the launch party! (Ask Tricia for details.)

Ok, everyone, your turn. Introduce yourselves and say hi! Or else! Muahahahaha!
Chat

We don't talk enough on here. So let's get some chat going. How are people doing? What did you have for dinner? What evil thing have you done to your characters today? What interesting thing did you hear today?

I hit yesterday's target today (which is something I keep saying); I had noodles and cheese on toast for lunch, but haven't had dinner yet; I've not actually done anything evil to any characters today (don't worry, I'll make up for it tomorrow) and today I heard some anti-jokes. Here's one:

What's the difference between a grocery bag and Michael Jackson?
One carries groceries and the other is a pop star.

Yay anti-jokes.
Events: Kick-off, Mid-meet and Weekly Write-ins

If you haven't already been to the pre-kickoff today, make sure to come to one of the other events during the month - Nano stickers! Sweets! Lively conversations about zombie ghosts! How can you resist?

We are doing a 'frequent writer' card, too, for you to get STARS for every 10,000 words you write. Bring them along every time and watch your card fill up with shiny starry goodness.

Kick-off meeting
Our first meeting in November is next weekend. Don't forget to start writing on the stroke of midnight Friday/Saturday (technically Saturday, but I gotta admit it seems like Friday night to me!), then come and meet up with other Leicester writers to get inspiration, steal some great ideas and herd those plot bunnies.

Sunday, 2 November, 2.00-4.00pm
Caffe Nero, 47 Market Street, Leicester LE1 6DN (upstairs) map

Mid-meet
To celebrate making it through the halfway point, we will be meeting up
Sunday, 16 November, 2.00-4.00pm
Caffe Nero, 47 Market Street, Leicester LE1 6DN (upstairs) map

Weekly Write-ins
There are weekly write-ins every Sunday in November. You may notice that these are combined with the Kick-off and Mid-meet events - at those events we'll chat for a bit then get down to some writing.

I will have my Seeds box with me full of cards with news articles, characters, locations, plot twists and obstacles to help when your imagination is letting you down. If yours is burning at full blast, make sure to share with the rest of us.

What is a write-in?
A write-in is where we gather together to write all in one place. Writing is often a lonely business, but it doesn't have to be in November! Bring your laptop or a pen and paper, and prepare to write with vigour. You'd be surprised how much you can get done in one session when others are spurring you on. We'll have a few word wars against the other attendees where we battle to get the most words in a set period of time, and exercises if the groups wants them.

Every Sunday in November, 2.00-4.00pm
Caffe Nero, 47 Market Street, Leicester LE1 6DN (upstairs) map

For all these events, I've reserved the big meeting room to the back left upstairs. There will also be a sign for NaNoWriMo on the table. I am happy to give my mobile number to anyone who feels they may need it to find us, just message me here or email nanoleicester@yahoo.co.uk

Hope to see lots of you there
Word War Banter

In this Banter thread, people from different regions can get together and offer one another gentle 'encouragement'. :-)

Please keep your banter here and in other regional banter threads as light-hearted as possible. While we expect a certain amount of jibes and name-calling, participants should still follow the main NaNo rules about behaviour on the boards. The use of smileys to emphasise the jovial nature of your insults is actively encouraged!

However, never forget that Leicester is going to rule the word count this year!!! GOOOoooooooo Leicester!!!!!

Lady Jane: the Leicester WriMo mascot

This is Lady Jane. She's a legless wyvern, the critter that can be found on top of the Leicester coat of arms and in various places, with and without legs, around Leicester. Technically speaking, a wyvern is the same as a dragon but with one pair of legs instead of two.

She's blue because that was the colour she looked best as, following a unanimous vote consisting of me, Tricia, my fiance Matt and my housemate Scott.

Her name stems from two sources - Jane Austen, the famous 19th century author, and Lady Jane Grey, the 9-days' Queen, who came from Leicestershire.

Update your word count!

Hi everyone

Looks like some of us are off to a roaring start, while others are taking it slow and steady. It's all good!
I wanted to just make sure everyone knows how to update your word count, since the grey counter at the very top of the page isn't working right now.

Go to the 'Edit novel info' under 'My Nanowrimo' tab above, where you can manually enter the word count that your word processor tells you.

This is especially important if you have signed up in the Word War sign up thread for the UK regional word war (note, you will not be counted in the word war if you have NOT signed up in that thread before the 10th). Word warriors must update their word count at least every other day on the even days of the month until the last week, when they need to update them every single day. Let me or Anezka know if you will not be updating on those required days for any reason. You can also drop out of the war up until the 20th, again by letting one of us know.

Everyone else, it is still important for you to update your word count so that the rest of the world knows that Leicester is full of awesome Wrimos that are chugging out words faster than they are! Your wordcount shows up in your buddy lists and your forum posts under your name. It also gives you a very strong sense of satisfaction to see the blue bar filling up micrometre by micrometre.

Keep writing - you're doing great!
How are you preparing?

I'm curious what everyone's plan is... if you have one. Right now, I'm still undecided between my three ideas. They're all really different, but I like all of them. I'd like to decide in the coming week so that I can maybe do a little outlining and/or character studies. I'll admit I haven't done much of that in the past, but it might be interesting for me to do Nano a little differently this time.

What about you guys? You can go at it in the true nature of Nano and wing it all, or you might have a very good idea in your head what you'll be writing. Or maybe you have a few scenes you are itching to write but don't know how they string together yet.

So, tell us if you're prepping, stressing or playing it cool.

Leicester Pre-Kickoff Meeting 26 Oct 2-4pm

Come and meet your fellow <strike>crazy writers</strike> Nanoers in Leicester!

Can't decide what to write about? Don't understand how it all works? Have too many ideas for your novel and want to share? Just want to find out who else is doing this intense writing month?

NaNoWriMo Leicester Pre-Kickoff meeting
Sunday, 26 October, 2.00-4.00pm
Caffe Nero, 47 Market Street, Leicester LE1 6DN (upstairs) map

We will try to reserve the big meeting room to the back left upstairs, otherwise we'll get a group of tables somewhere up there. I'll have a sign for NaNoWriMo. I am happy to give my mobile number to anyone who feels they may need it to find us, just message me here or email nanoleicester@yahoo.co.uk

You may want to bring a pen and some paper, as we may do some writing exercises. But really it's about meeting up and having fun.

Significant others/parents welcome but they may get bored ... or roped into doing Nano themselves!

Will you be there?

Twitter

I use Twitter quite a lot. It'd be an addiction if it wasn't such a social thing. I'm going to be tweeting about my progress in NanoWrimo. Is anyone else?

My account's username is "fragmad".
'In Sickness, Health, Carbon and Ink' - A NaNoShort

Hey, guys! It's Ben (the bald one) from Sunday's meet.

If I recall a couple of you were a little worried about not having a plot come November 1st, which led-on to the discussion about Chris Baty's NaNoAid, 'No Plot? No Problem!'

Well, following-on from this, I have written a short story with the intention of inspiring those in despair, and hopefully entertaining those currently fuelled with the confidence to take on the literary greats!

Either way, I hope you enjoy it all the same. Here's the link:

http://www.absolutewrite.com/forums/showthread.php?t=119965

Good luck for Saturday!
Literary Leicester Festival 29 Oct-1 Nov

The University of Leicester is sponsoring a literary festival to celebrate the opening of their new library. It takes places over three days (Wed 29 Oct, Thurs 30 Oct, and Sat 1 Nov) and all events are free, although some require you to book tickets ahead.

See http://www2.le.ac.uk/institution/literary-leicester for full details.

Might be a nice way to ease into a literary month of our own!

Is anyone thinking of going?

Word War Rules

A few of you expressed interest in participating in the UK Word War competition against other regions. Please read these rules before signing up on the other thread.

RULES

Eligibility

You must live within the UK or Ireland, and be relatively close to the city or region you
wish to represent.

Sign-ups

Your ML will provide a "Word War Sign Up” thread on your local forum to track word
count. Participants will post ONCE in the Word War Sign Up thread by 8pm on 10th
November stating that they wish to participate.

The Regional Word War

You must update your word count every two days, on the even numbered days of the
month, by 8pm. If you are unable to update your count, contact your ML.

During the last partial week (26th –– 29th Nov), you must update your word count daily, by 8pm. If this isn't possible, contact your ML immediately.

If you do not update your word count on four consecutive occasions it will be assumed that you have given up and you will be removed from the war (unless you already have more than 50k) If you know that you’re going to be away and won’t be able to update, let your ML know so that we can prevent this.

You must input your final (verified) word count by midnight on 30th November. After
midnight, you will no longer be able to update your count.

Scoring

You may drop out of the Regional Word War at any time up to 8pm on 20th November without affecting your region's count. If you do not drop out by messaging either myself or your ML, you will be in for the remainder of the competition, NO MATTER WHAT!

During the Regional Word War there will be a regularly updated leader board on an external web site. I'll post a link to this board to each competing region as soon as I've confirmed it myself!

Only the official word count from the "Word War Sign Up" threads on the NaNoWriMo web site will be considered when computing the final score.

After midnight on 30th November, the word war coordinator (Loriba) will ask the other MLs from competing regions (or their designated representatives) to verify the figures before declaring a winner.

Results

There will be two prizes:
The city/region with the highest average word count.
The city/region with the highest proportion of winners from the starting participants.
The MLs will compare results, and when all regions agree, the results will be posted on the NaNo boards.

Banter

Participants are encouraged to engage in good natured banter with participants from other regions in the various Word War Banter threads. Banter should remain good natured and within the bounds of good sportsmanship. The use of 'smileys' in messages is actively encouraged.

ML's god-like powers

MLs decide what "good sportsmanship" means.
We reserve the right to remove folks from the competition for any violation of the rules and guidelines listed above.

MLs are the final authority in any dispute or question about the rules.

Trophies

To be determined...
Meetings

Yes, we do plan on having some. Here are the ones I can remember about (I'll update the list once I've had a chat with Tricia, who seems to be having connection issues or something):

Pre-kick-off meeting Sunday 26th October, 2pm at Caffe Nero on Market Street, Leicester

Launch party (to be confirmed)

Write ins on every Sunday in November, 2pm, Caffe Nero on Market Street. This includes the midway meet on the 15th.

TGIO party (to be confirmed)

Please do join us at the meetings. We'll have stuff, stickers and stars* and prompts and all sorts of fun writing-related games and challenges courtesy of the idea factory known as the ML private boards. So don't you dare miss it (if you do, you won't know what you're missing, so if you want to find out what you'd be missing if you were missing it, you'd better come along so you know.)

Got all that? Good.

*Anyone at Leicester University who feels like over-riding the pater noster in Attenborough Tower, look out for the star I stuck up there the day Tricia and I met up to discuss this stuff. Sometimes I'm so juvenile, though I prefer to think of it as letting my inner child out for a while.
