NaNoWriMo New Blood

Hey... everyone!
I'm Katryne, and this is going to be my first fully-committed year on NaNoWriMo, I'm actually pretty excited about the whole thing. I tried to join in on the complete insanity last year but a couple unmentionables kept me from doing it. No matter, now I'm here and ready to go! I just wanted to introduce myself to you all, since my blurb about myself is pretty vague.

Like a lot of people here -I'm noticing- I'm bilingual. French is my mother tongue and English is my second language, but I've been educated exclusively in English my whole life, so that's what I'll be writing in.

I'll be trying to write this book in between being a full-time college student, recovering from panic (in recovery for a year, WOOT), part-time job hunter (and then hopefully part time worker) and fully time nut. Hopefully I'll be able to out-do myself this year, I'm really gearing towards kicking my NaNoWriMo career off on the right foot!

I am so happy I have hit it, I think perhaps I will slow down, but not stop. I am not even close to halfway at this point if my outlining is correct.

I have never actually finished one.

Somewhere in greater Montreal is easiest for me to get too but I'm pretty flexible as long as it isn't halfway back to Sask, lol.

I've just added a section to the Regional info tab at the top of the main forum section, where you can see how our collective word count stacks up to those in some other regions (Quebec, Ottawa, and Toronto right now).

We also have room for one more, if there is a particular region that people would like to see up there.

First the calendar, now this. Sue me, but the top section was looking a bit bland :P

I go to the Cote St Luc library to do my writing during the day/evening. Is there anyone else in the area interested in joining me?

The coffee shop is never open the the mall across the street keeps mall hours, I just thought I'd mention since getting food/drink isn't exactly simple. I live two minutes away though, so I can always get stuff from there.

Avez-vous déjà lu Jacques Poulin? Je veux dire, plus que deux de ses livres? Si oui, vous comprendrez peut-être ce qui se passe avec mes prénoms. Dans tout ce que j’écris, le personnage principal féminin s’appelle Alice. Pourquoi Alice? Je sais pas, peut-être parce que ça rime avec malice, peut-être parce que c’était le vrai nom de Kiki, peut-être parce que j’aimerais bien m’appeler Alice, aussi.
Chez Jacques Poulin, c’est presque pareil. Jim, Jack, Marie, Marika, Théo. Est-ce que ça rend la lecture moins intéressante d’histoire en histoire?
Et pis d’abord, comment on fait, sinon, pour choisir un nom? J’ai essayé le truc du bottin, mais j’arrive pas à coller une personnalité aux noms que je trouve. C’est fou, hein?
J’aime Alice, Sarah, Iris et, limite, Élizabeth. Pour les hommes, par exemple, je suis complètement prise au dépourvu. Dans mes histoires, j’ai jamais vraiment réussi à leur attribuer autre chose que des noms de famille… Faudra peut-être que je revisite le complexe d’Œdipe, mais en attendant, quelqu’un a des suggestions?

All night write-in at Milton x Parc

Hello everyone! There is a 24-hour Second Cup at the corner of Milton and Parc (near McGill University, also near the Place des Arts metro station), and I intend to sit there and write all night (or as long as I can stay awake!). If anyone else is interested in joining me, let me know what days you're free - I'm open to suggestions! My only request is that it be the night of November 3rd or later, since I have midterms on both the 2nd and 3rd. The more the merrier, and of course the more people there, the easier it will be to stay awake throughout the night.

If anyone is curious as to how to get there, it is about a 5 minute walk up Parc from the Place des Arts metro station, or alternatively you can take the 80 bus which usually runs at intervals of 10 minutes or less (during rush hour, this bus is the 535 and runs at about 5 min intervals, and at night there is the 365).

It's a pot-luck party, bring what you'd like to for the party. I'll see to a few cases of beer, and some nonalcoholic drinks. (Why me? Because I live here and don't have to drag the heavy things through a crowded metro) If you happen to forget to bring something, don't worry. Come anyway. But if no one brings food, we can all starve for the evening.

You're welcome to come early; door opens at 4. That might be useful if you want some quiet conversation in a low-entropy environment before the main crowd comes, if you bring food that has to be heated or otherwise processed (we have oven, microwave, refrigerator, pots, the usual kitchen stiff), if you'd like to help set things up, or if you want to sit down and write a few more thousand words.

If you have written 2000 words since midnight by the time the party starts, you get a (not-gold) star sticker.

Walking directions:

Go to the Villa Maria metro station.

Then go out its from door, cross the Decarie service road, cross the bridge (you're on Monkland now) and follow for several blocks (5 or 6 on the right, depending on whether the expressway counts as a block, 3 on the left) until you get to Marcil. There's a provigo store at the corner of Marcil and Monkland. Also a Ben & Jerry's. Turn left onto Marcil (sorry, it's one-way; you'll have to go an extra block and three lefts around it if you're driving) and go about half a block to 4133.

If you get lost, call 514 483 4078 and I'll try to figure out where you ended up.

Words that are spelled wrong when they're spelled right

Have any of you ever come across words that just seem to be spelled wrong even though the dictionary says they're right? Or do you have certain preferences between British or American spelling of English words? I think traveling should be spelled with two "l"s; it just looks wrong otherwise.

Cette année sera ma première participation au NaNoWriMo et j'ai un questionnement particulier; comme plusieurs à Montréal, je suis bilingue (le français est ma langue maternelle) et je crois bien avoir une bonne connaissance des deux langues. Je ne suis pas sûr de savoir en quelle langue écrire, par contre. Est-ce que quelqu'un ici a de l'expérience à ce sujet et/ou des conseils à me donner?

I will be participating for the first time in the NaNoWriMo this year and I'm sort of in a pickle. Like many in Montréal, I'm bilingual (french as a first language, english second). Daylight Savings Time Ends

I've been told Daylight Savings Time ends tonight. That would mean that at 2AM you set the clock back an hour, effectively giving you an extra hour tonight.

Even better, the extra hour falls after midnight, so you get an extra hour of novelling time!
