I would like to point out the following:

It is possible to figure out what the average words per writer in a region is. Under "My Nanowrimo" -> "My Regions" you can see how many people are in each region, and under each writer's profile page you can go to the "NaNo Stats" tab to see how many words have been posted by writers in that writer's region. (Also in that writer's genre, but I suspect too few people have chosen a genre in their Author Info profile editor to actually log a statistically meaningful sample.)

Regarding average words, JupiterStar of the Denver region has suggested a friendly competition.

Colorado::Boulder is claimed by a total of 521 writers. Collectively, we've posted 93,844 words by now (9:00 PM on Day 2). That's an average of 180.12284069097888675623800383877 words per writer.

Colorado::Denver, comprising 825 writers, boasts a total of 260,307 words. That's 315.52363636363636363636363636364 words per writer.

Rounded, that's 180 to 316.

Dude! Denver's beatin' us by almost 2 to 1! What's up with that?

Fix it!

HEY! Who let her in here?!

*g* *g* *g*

I'd like to note that after I updated my word count today, having gotten myself caught up with yesterday (I'll get caught up for today at the Burnt Toast tonight), Colorado::Boulder is reporting 559,785 words in the 539-person region: a 1038.56-word average for Boulder!.

Colorado::Denver, with 851 writers, has 1085896 words: 1276.02 per writer in Denver!

Weeee're catchin' up! Bwahahaha!

I'll report again after I've reached my Day 6 goal.

I expect good things out of Boulder, an' I'm gratified to see that Boulder delivers!

I'm confused. Wasn't that pig on the ground already? Er. Was it a flying pig?

Boulder's average is now 1032.81 words per writer; Denver's is 1276.02. Yes, our average appears to have gone down - I suppose that's because we got a few new affiliates this afternoon. Went from 539 to 542 people affiliated with Boulder. That's OK, we'll get it back as they start WRITING LIKE MANIACS!

Well, technically, *we* are not on the ground, 'cause we are riding a pig! I suppose it is a confusing phrase -- "to the ground" describes the word "riding" in the sentence, which is what we, minus the said pig, are doing, but I suppose if we are on a pig we have to take the pig with us as we ride to the ground. And since the pig is already on the ground, this makes no sense whatsoever.

Or, maybe it is a flying pig after all and I have just been hallucinating...

Still about 300 behind! I just sent out emails to a couple folks helping 'em find the word count updater. Will include said info in tomorrow morning's regional email. That should help. Heh heh heh!

Word war widgets!

Except, of course, the widget doesn't take into account the number of participants. Nor is it frozen in time, so it isn't useful as a right-now-this-second snapshot unless you're looking right-now-this-second.

So we'll keep doing this the old-fashioned way:

Boulder: 944986 / 550 = 1718.16
Denver: 1857010 / 862 = 2154.30

Denver's widening the gap, y'all! We need more words badly! (Of course, a lot of us are affiliated with both regions, which means every word we write counts towards both Boulder and Denver...)

Actually, there *is* a widget option for showing number of people...

The number of people it shows is a lot smaller than number of affiliates, though. Maybe that's the number of people who have set Boulder or Denver as their home region? Sure makes our averages look a lot more formidable! (And makes Denver's lead look a lot smaller!)

Again, not frozen in time, so to take these numbers down for posterity....

Boulder: 944986 words, 8999/person, 105 people
Denver: 1857010 words, 9147/person, 203 people

vortexae -

How did you get the widget to show the averages?

First of all, I want to thank you, Vortexae, for the lovely write-in at the Tea Spot yesterday. I loved the atmosphere and all the yummy teas, and got quite a bit written. It was lovely to meet you as well after getting your pep talks for the past several years in my mailbox.

Second, since my Denver writing group disintegrated for November this year (something about a trip to Toronto and a marriage and other non writing related stuff) AND that I intend to continue joining the write-ins at the Tea Spot every Saturday, I've changed my official home region to Boulder this year (I live halfway between Boulder and Denver anyway, it's fair).

Hopefully my humble word count will help the challenge. Go Boulder!

arcadiajoy - Yay! It was good to meet you Saturday. Welcome to the region!

Regarding getting the widget to show averages: At the bottom of the Widgets page, they list options you can include in your .png URL. I used the basic URL for the regional word war widget, and then I added a "-people-average" to the bit before the ".png". Hence, "http://www.nanowrimo.org/NanowrimoUtils/RegionWar/179-129-people-average.png".

( The widget now shows Boulder with an average of 9656 and Denver with 9733 - closer now! much closer!)

A tiny warning about the widgets...I went and counted the number of people who were listing Denver as their home region and those who were posting wordcounts and all sorts of possible ways to figure out what number they are using for each region in terms of participants, and not once did the numbers ever match up to that one. So we have NO IDEA where that number is coming from. It's not the number of people saying it's their home region, it's not the number of affiliates obviously, it's not the number posting...so...yeah...not sure how reliable those'll be for this or not.

I wish the site would just up and say where that widget number was coming from.

I presume you used the newly available Author Search page to count home regions? My guess is, that search is gonna vary based on how you word your search... "Colorado::Boulder" got me nothing, "Boulder, Colorado" got me nothing, and just plain "Boulder" got me 186 people, not all of home with Boulder or even Colorado as their location. It does, however, appear to be actually searching the home region option, and not the Author Info free-text "location" blank; the folks with a Location of Massachusetts or Michigan did actually have Boulder as their home region listed on their profile pages. But I'm not looking forward to going through them by hand and weeding out those from Boulder City, Nevada.

In any case, 186 is not the number of people listed in the widget.

Is there a more reliable way of finding out how many people have chosen a given region as their home region?

Nope, I just went to My NaNoWriMo, clicked the link on the number of people per region and went through every profile individually. It was a pain. *Sigh* I'm sure there is one, but...I dunno. I've been checking the ML lounges to see if anything has been mentioned there, but no dice, so I'm just going the same was I was before.

Bummer.

I did scan through the 186 results I got when searching for Home Region = "Boulder" on the Author Search, clicking on those whose locations weren't spelled out to see, and indeed, they were all Colorado :: Boulder. (There in fact isn't a Boulder City region. Nevada does Las Vegas, Reno, and Elsewhere. Something like that.)

So I'm going to assume that the Author Search is as close as we're gonna get. That being the case...

Boulder Stats
Words in Region: 1,386,179
Affiliates in region: 553
* average words-per-affiliate: 2507
Writers with Boulder as Home Region: 188 (as of today)
* average words-per-Boulderite: 7373

Denver Stats
Words in Region: 2,659,111
Affiliates in region: 865
* average words-per-affiliate: 3074
Writers with Denver as Home Region: 308
* average words-per-Denverite: 5387

I expect that, since we're leading the race as far as Home Region goes, you may want to compare with the numbers you get from your method of determining who's got your region as Home. *wicked grin*

Huh...I went and did the math for today just like that and came up with such a difference between the number of words that I went back, and when I did it for these numbers I got the old average-per-regionite to be Boulder 7373 and Denver 8633. So be careful who you're challenging! *Evil grin*
