We're four days in. Our first weekend is coming to a close in just a few hours. That initial rush of excitement is probably fading (if it's not long gone), and suddenly most of us are looking at the remainder of the month and thinking, "uh oh..."
So, how are folks doing?
I am very very (very) far behind so far this year. I'm not panicked (yet), but I know that this week I'll have to start grinding out lots of words to get back on track. I am not being too hard on myself given the events of last week (see here for my sad story: http://www.nanowrimo.org/eng/node/1030042), but I have every intention of catching up in the next few days.
What's your progress look like? Way ahead? Abysmally behind? Share with other Lawrencians here!

You aren't kidding about the "uh oh" factor. I have words, actually a good deal of them. I'm only about 500 words behind...but I'm just not feeling my story. I'm a little bored with it and it's only day four! I am hoping if I just keep plodding along I will hit a spot where it becomes fun and exciting, but right now it just feels like work. Bah.
I hope everyone is having better luck than me.

Not that I'm a forum troll or anything...
I love my story. I think about it all the time. I have more words of notes on a legal pad than in MS Word; therein lies the problem ;-) I have an issue of letting go of a paragraph after it is written. If I am going to succeed, I need to create - not pound out, refashion, melt down and reconstitute.

"Uh oh factor" indeed.
I actually feel pretty good about how my story is progressing. However, my word count is lagging significantly behind what is necessary to get to the end of the month successfully. KU basketball is going to be a problem for me. Well, that and spending too much time thinking about what I'm writing instead of opening up and letting go (to mix a metaphor or two). Maybe I should pull out my copy of "Writing Down the Bones" and see if I can capture some inspiration.
Cheers and fast typing.

Doing OK so far. 3500 words in 6 hours is off to a good start, now I just have to figure out where to go from here.

Well I ran into a fairly big football weekend (KU #4! Wow. And Colts/Patriots...if you follow the NFL, you know that continued rivalry). However, what I have so far I am really enjoying writing. I came into one of those fun quirks that happen when you write where you drop in a phrase that makes you think of something else to put in down the line, and you then find that adds a lot of conflict and interest to the story. So I'm excited to get to that part and then carry on from there.
I'm behind where I want to be, but I'm beginning my "laptop on lunch break" program today, so ideally 40 minutes 5 days a week outside of when I'd be writing at home will help me catch up and move ahead of my ideal pace. I posted a small excerpt on my profile if anyone's interested in a very very small sneak preview.

I'm soooooo behind it isn't funny. All of my word count was actually done yesterday in a couple of sittings.
On a daily basis, I'm just not feeling the urge to write. I know in my mind I need to get over it. The idea of not finishing is just not allowed.
But this year seems to be difficult.

The last few years, I had a little bit of an idea on where I was going. This time, no. No idea where Kate's leading me, but she's going somewhere and all I have to do is flesh out the story so it stretches to the 50k mark (and beyond if necessary).
I think I'm doing okay.

FABULOUS, thanks for asking! I'm very sorry to hear/read about your critter issues; sometimes it's worse than losing a person in your life, because people always have a hidden a**hole-ish-ness about them--dogs, hardly ever.
Anyway, my word count is lagging due to medical issues, but I picked back up tonight and am having more fun with this story than I ever thought possible, especially given the subject matter--heck, I spent half an hour Googling the Black Dahlia's autopsy photos for it, and I think I'm going to go to sleep high on my own words instead of fending off the nightmares those pictures have given me in the past, which is no small feat. It's awesome to be exorcising someone *else's* demons, for once.

I managed to breathe some life back into my story. And while I'm still not as excited about this story as I was about my story last year, I am actually happy with where it is going now. Really thought I had stagnated at 6,000 words! The danger is not yet over, it still is balancing precariously at the edge of boring and potential-less, but I've got the characters talking and they are telling me amazing things. There is hope!

I thought it was going to be harder.... I sit down, I type (or scribble), words pile up. If I had known it was going to be this easy, I'd've started doing it long ago.
I won't be *done* in only 50K words, but still.

I'd echo the sentiments about how I'm thrilled at the exercise, but I can't believe it took something like this to make me sit down and write it. I guess it comes from being a little goal oriented... i.e., if it isn't getting published, why bother? kind of thing. This took the edge off of all that.
Only thing is, I've found I can pound out 5,000 a day, roughly, so why wasn't I before?

For a novice who had to leave town for several days this past week, I am doing much better than I thought I would. As of today, I am withing 1500 words of being on target with my individual daily writing goal after the absence. Now I fear I will get so far and run out of steam, but I am more than halfway home. Some of your numbers are so far ahead of mine that you must have really hit the track running. I am impressed. If you get to 50,000 words early, do you just keep writing or submit when you reach the magic number? I know whatever I have at the end will need a good bit of editing, but so far things are going well enough.

Some people keep writing until the end of November. Some probably just write until 50k, or write until their story reaches a conclusion, whichever comes first.
Most of us will be on the path to completion until the very last days of the month. So welcome to the club, and keep up with those words!

Bah....nothing is HAPPENING in my story. People are talking a lot and there is some pretty scenery and the world is taking shape, but almost 30,000 words in and nothing exciting has happened! I am leading up to something exciting, but I am afraid to write it. And then I don't know what to have happen after that! This has been a very painful story.
But at least I am less than 1,000 words behind right now, and will be caught up before I go to bed. I guess that is something.

I suppose it is going better although I'm still a ways behind. I went from the teens to a little past the halfway point. I'd hoped to make it to 30,000 before I go to bed but I'm finding my attention wavering a little. I might make it but, then again, I might give in to that basic need to sleep.
