Those of you who were around the last couple of years will probably recall that I like statistics, and keeping track of how the region is doing is an important part of what I do as your Municipal Liaison (ML). I've been frustrated in scraching my statistical itch this year, given the slowness of the website and the fact that many of the ML tools have been de-activated or not yet brought online in an attempt to reduce the strain on the servers.

I'm not the only ML who is struggling with this issue, and Tim Yao, one of the MLs for the Illinois::Naperville region wrote a script that pulled information from the user profiles associated with his region to give a snapshot of how his region was performing. Tim generously shared his talents and applied his script to the Spokane region for me. (I suspect he'll be quite busy running these stats for the other MLs, but we were lucky enough to be the first other region to benefit from Tim's talents.)

My records show that the Spokane Region has 212 authors affiliated, but Tim's script only returns 187. My best guess is that the missing 25 authors are legacy usernames who haven't logged onto the site at all this year. You are considered active if you have either posted at least once on the forums OR if you have a wordcount of more than zero. What? You say you haven't posted your wordcount yet? Shame on you -- you're skewing my stats. Go, update your wordcount now -- the statistics will still be here when you get back.

Spokane Region 11/4/07 Results:
Total regional wordcount = 274,824

Number of Spokane Affiliates = 187
Number of active Spokane Affiliates = 83 (44%)

Number of Spokane Home Region folks = 140
Number of active Spokane Home Region folks = 65 (46%)

Average wordcount (total affiliated) = 1,469.65
Average wordcount (Spokane home) = 1,963.03

Average wordcount (active affiliates) = 3,311.13
Average wordcount (active Spokane home) = 4,228.06

Tim warns me that the script only returns a single snapshot in time; if it were a dynamic link it too would probably break the NaNo stie, so we'll have to wait for the wordcount widgets & regional tallys to come online to get updated information. But it looks like we're off to a good start.

Wow. yay Tim!! I was getting frustrated too. We should send him a box of chocolates and a container of coffee - or something. Glad to see we are doing well. =)

I miss the energizing list of who is in front of me - It sparks something in me a little bit competitive.

According to the official Word Count Scorecard, this morning Spokane was in 127th place out of a total 349 regions in overall word count, but we are 110 places further down the list, in 237th place, based on our average word count per author. (Click on each heading to sort -- click twice to see the highest-to-lowest results.)

The average per/author figure is taken only from the 77 Spokane home-region authors who have posted any word count at all. It does not include those who signed up and have not written, or the old usernames still left over from past years.
