Year Round Writer's Group

nycbutterfly wrote:
Hello out there, Savannah NaNoers!

Is anyone interested in a year round writers' group? I think it would be great to have the camaraderie and support. I'd be willing to facilitate, or co-facilitate. I have been in writers' groups/workshops before, and I also have a background in teaching writing, (but I wouldn't lord it over everyone, or want to be in charge--honest!).

Think about it and let me know,

I'm reposting this in case any of you missed it on the "Georgia :: Elsewhere" forum.

I like the idea of a writer's group comprised of local yokels, whoever the leader turns out to be. I would also like all of you to join me on either facebook or myspace, so that even if we can't meet in person every once in a while, we can exchange ideas and stories online. Also, this would be a great way to set up meeting times and places. If I get enough people on either site (or another if you'd like), I'll create a private group so that we can feel free to post whatever we want help with. We could even create a group on yahoo for those that don't wish to register accounts at either facebook or myspace.

Let me know what you'd like to do!

Meetings

The first meeting will be at Books A Million this Sunday, November 11th, from 2 to 4 p.m. Get together, have some caffine, and meet your fellow NaNoer's at Joe Muggs in the store. Bring your writing equipment if you'd like. I don't recall seeing any outlets so that may be a problem unless you have a good battery in your laptop. Hope to see you all there!

Winners?

Well, this forum sure is lonely looking! :(

I'm not in Savannah at the moment, but that doesn't mean I can't encourage you guys, right? How many of you are still writing? YOU CAN DO IT. Seriously. Four days ago, I was at 27k and horribly, horribly behind. ... I totally just barfed up 20k+ words in four nights. It was epic and amazing. But I did it. I finished 3 days ahead of schedule. YOU GUYS CAN MAKE IT TOOO!

For those of you who don't know. Q10 is an amazing tool for writers like us doing NaNo. It will time you for short sprints of writing and tell you how many words you've written in that sprint. It's also a fullscreen editor so you have NO distractions and NO excuses. Really awesome. I was averaging about 500 words per 10 minute sprint. Three of those a day and you're at quota. Got an hour scattered throughout the day? Take ten here and there, you'll have 3k words if you're lucky! :)

Anyway yeah. Just wanted to shout out some encouragement to you guys in Savannah. I'll be waiting for ya'll in the winners' circle. ;D

Savannah Can Write!

I just signed up for NaNoWriMo even though today's already the fifth day of the month, so I am already behind. Which is appropriate somehow. Heard about this two years ago, then forgot until December 2006, so I am way ahead now. Looking for other Savannah novelists out there. I see there are three of us logged in. Who are you?
New Region-Savannah

Okay, mistake on my part. The original post got deleted. I apologize to all the Savannah Nanoers and I'll be updating with the information lost.

Well it's day #7. Has everyone written their 50,000 words yet? No? Eh, me either! I was torn on what to write this year. Last year I wrote the first several chapters of a fantasy (war, barbarians, etc). This year was either going to be a police procedural novel or a paranormal romance. I intended on writing the police book but when I started describing an isolated pond in the woods as a prospective crime scene, it kind of turned into the beginnings of a romance. So yeah, I guess that's where I'm heading!

A mistake I made a couple of years ago when I attempted to meet the 50k words was that I thought it had to 'be a complete book'. I was so intent on writing an almost "perfect" story that I don't think I got past 5,000 words. I don't think the purpose of being a NaNo is to write a complete book that only needs minor polishing before sending off to some lucky publisher (lol). The ultimate goal is the 50k word count and if you skip a scene or two, that's fine. The one I won last year, though it was over 50,000 words, was no where near finished at the end of the month. I omitted at least two chapters in the middle of what I submitted because I just couldn't figure out which way I wanted to go when I hit that crossroad. The main thing is getting your ideas down on paper, work on developing your characters and let them help you push forward with the plot. And if you hit a brick wall or a "well what if we go this a-way...", skip over or select one of the roads and keep going. Once you reach your goal at the end of the month you can go back and start filling in the missing pieces. Don't stop and definitely don't re-write anything! Just keep on writing. If something interesting pops up that you think you can work in later, jot it down somewhere in your word count. Later go back and develop it.

Okay, pep talk over! Get writing! Be sure to invite your friends in the area and also email your friends in other States.
