I experienced an interesting phenomenon this past Saturday. Though my word count isn't terribly impressive at the moment, I've managed to pace myself between school work and NaNo writing pretty easily. Most of my writing has to take place at night, an hour or two before heading to sleep. This Saturday, I had a good two hours between class and work. The perfect opportunity to work on NaNo and get ahead on my word count, right?

Wrong. For some reason, I couldn't bring myself to write a bloody word. It was weird. It was only after the fact I realized it was because, unlike every other time I'm busy writing, I had no music playing in the background. Burning a few cds for sole purpose of working in computer labs solved this quickly. I hadn't realized how much I really needed music to write creatively.

It got me wondering... Is there anything special you guys use to help inspire your creativity or just put you in the mood to write? And is there anything you've found you absolutely need in order to write?

This year I absolutely have to listen to David Bowie's "Life on Mars" before I start writing. Even if I'm at work and I'm just jotting down a paragraph or two while my code compiles. It puts me in the mood instantly, and I don't know why. It might have to do with the fact that my story involves time travel, and is slightly inspired by the television show of the same name, but whatever it is, it's awesome.

Tea...and a deadline. I could not concentrate this weekend, even though I knew what I wanted to write. I'd sit down and...nothing. And I thought, "Why am I so productive on the train?" Oh, of course. I only have an hour to write on the train! I have all weekend to write at home. :P Sometimes I wonder how I got through college, or how I manage to write anything at work.
