Hello, all:

If a born-again Christian had to work with a Wiccan in a religious context, what Bible verses would come to that Christian's mind in the context of having to work closely with an unbeliever?

Anything that comes to mind would be very helpful. Thank you to all who take the time to respond.

Interesting question. Christians and wiccans have to work together frequently in real life, but
you, if I am reading this right, are asking them to be working together in a religious context?
You need to clarify this more.
Will you?

lol, my best friend is a born-again Christian who frequestly talks with Wiccans on religious matters. Not because of occupation though, just out of friendship. Anyway, I'll email her and see what she has to say. Trust me, knowing her she's probably thought a zillion different relevant verses already. When I get her reply I'll post it for you.

Hello, sectylady. :-)

My story, currently titled Where Darkness Falls, is set in Chicago in 2015 (which will allow me to play around with technology a bit if the mood strikes me). In this universe, all religions have access to the Divine and certain members of each religion, called Manifesters, exhibit supernatural abilities based on the qualities of their religion. Most major cities have a DPNI (Department of Paranormal Investigation), which is an under-the-table organization that looks into crimes and other events related to Manifesters. (Sort of like the men in black, except minus the cool suits and sunglasses.)

In October of 2015, four Christian sex offenders are murdered, and the signs point to the person behind it being a rogue Wiccan Manifester. As a result, a Wiccan DPNI agent and Manifester is assigned to investigate the case; however, since all the victims were born-again Christians, the Christian division of DPNI insists on putting their oar in the water and sends a Christian agent and Manifester (a Southern Baptist) to work with the Wiccan agent. As you can imagine, they don't get off to a very good start together (the relationship between Christians and Wiccans being generally antagonistic), and the novel will follow their relationship as they try to solve the crime.

The Southern Baptist is a very reserved individual who is not used to working so closely with someone whose religion is (to him) outright Satan worship, and since he'll be working inside the Wiccan division (including at their headquarters, with God and Goddess murals, for example), he's going to be going through a bit of culture shock. He'll also be witnessing some of the Wiccan religious practices, which I'm certain he'll be having a strong reaction to.

The verse (so often abused, alas) that springs immediately to mind in the context you describe is Exodus 22.18. This website http://www.religioustolerance.org/wic_bibl2.htm might be useful to you. (I googled "thou shalt not suffer a witch to live", by the way; some of the other sites that search brought up might also help.)

On a more positive note, some of Jesus' sayings could well encourage an open-minded Christian to accept the work of a co-worker from a different faith. For example,

"John said to him, "Teacher, we saw someone driving out demons in your name, and we tried to prevent him because he does not follow us."
Jesus replied, "Do not prevent him. There is no one who performs a mighty deed in my name who can at the same time speak ill of me.
For whoever is not against us is for us." Mark 9.38-40

Hope that's helpful.

Heya! Got her reply, and here it is:

So, what this person is asking is "if a born-again Christian had to work with a Wiccan in the contents of religion, what Bible verses would come to that Christian's mind in the context of having to work that closely with a nonbeliever"?
Hmmm... if he/she means working somehow religiously with a nonbeliever or working, as in just having to work together, with a nonbeliever, it would make the question much easier.
Well, the verses that always come are the ones such as Matthew 22: 37-39 'And He(Jesus) said to him(a Pharisee): " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: 'You shall love your neighbor as yourself.' (New American Standard Bible) It comes to me because, God wants us to show everyone His love, because God does love His creations. So, just because this person doesn't believe in God (from Christian perspective), God still loves them. That's what stands strong in my heart. And every Christian shoudl know that God doesn't discriminate, so we, His people, should not discrinminate or judge either. (But we are to judge other Christians such as if a person I know is claiming to be a Christian and they're doing something unChristian, I'm s'posed to tell them. Cuz sometimes, they might not know that it's wrong. I think everyone needs someone strong to just say things like they are to their friends. Like, if I'm being stupid. I want someone to tell me. That's why I have my accountability partner. ^-^)
Other than that, not too many other verses come to me. Please tell the person I'm sorry if I couldn't be of too much help. :)

Here is a small selection :)

1 Peter 5:7 7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.

Philippians 4:12-13 12 I know both how to be abased, and I know how to abound: every where and in all things I am instructed both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.

Philippians 4:13 I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.

1 Thessalonians 5:
17 Pray without ceasing.
18 In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.

and the biggies here:

Mark 12:29-31

29 And Jesus answered him, The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord:

30 And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.

31 And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.

for the discerning follower of Jesus will understand that Witches are people Jesus loves too.
This will lead to an interesting conflict as he will greatly dislike the things that the wiccans are doing, but will hold out
hope for them to eventually understand that Jesus truly is ~the Way, the Truth and the Life~

His servant,
mark

I would HOPE "Judge not that you be not judged." But I know that's wistful thinking. "Born agains" tend to forget that verse even exists.

Love one another.
And the greatest of these is love.
For God so loved the world.

But if the Southern Baptist does not like the Wiccan, commit the sin of eisegesis. Take a Bible passage out of context and twist it to fit what he wants it to mean.

Romans 1:18-32 would be interesting. While the Christian sees the natural world as proof of God's power, the Wiccan sees something else. Those differences would lead to completely different world-views.

Galatians 5:19-21 may be the standard for witchcraft in the New Testament.

Deuteronomy 18:9-11 is the injunction against it in the Old Testament.

I don't know where you're coming from or what the character of your Christian is like. I just want to point out that the last two passages are directed at people who consider themselves followers of God. At the time of Christ, Israel was ruled by the Romans. The Jews were surrounded by people they considered pagan, immoral, completely misguided. But they still worked with them on a daily basis. There's nothing I know of, especially in the New Testament, that says anything about not working with a non-Christian. The "do not be unequally yoked" passage only refers to marriage.

Your story is different (and intriguing) but military chaplains work with other religious leaders whose core beliefs are heresy to each other. Some are even friends! :)

Mmmhmm. Or forget that contradictory passages exist.

I thought of the passage where Saul sought out the Witch of Endor in 1 Samuel, chapter 28. It confirms the existence of a spirit world, although earlier admonishments caution against using witchcraft (Deut.). Saul called upon the witch to call up Samuel from the dead. It may or may not have been Samuel, but Saul did not receive the comfort or encouragement he had been looking for. What he got instead was confirmation of God's previous word through the living Samuel -- that the kingdom would be taken from Saul and given to David. Plus the spirit predicted the death of Saul and his sons.

Oh, and then there's Simon the Sorcerer, found in Acts 8:9-25 who practiced magic arts but coveted the power of the Holy Spirit.

Your story sounds very intriguing. I would read it. Good luck!

sorry all,

what got me was the "purported born again Christians"
criminal acts that are being investigated.
and a wiccan and a s. Baptist investigation team.

I suspect the Wiccan might be flabbergasted at how
when she thought the S Bap should be shocked
he took it all in stride instead

your Wiccan needs to discover who Christians are made from

and believe you me--being born, and being born again
are differenciated for a reason
could be that your S Bapt used to be a ___________
prior to becoming a Christian.
