Just curious as to how many people are going for 'writing what you know' as far as setting?

Personally, I haven't yet decided where my setting is for the most part, but I don't think it's Brisbane.

BTW, I didn't mean for that title to appear so illiterate. I typed it quickly and there doesn't seem to be an edit function. Bah!

I am definitely "writing what I know".

However, it would appear that I know the universe of Star Wars a whole lot better than I know Brisbane... :o)

Up until last night it could have been set almost anywhere, but I spent most of the write in churning out a scene set in a park and when I looked back it had just magically turned into New Farm Park. There's also a couple of references in other scenes to background noise from traffic on the Story Bridge and a future romantic scene will be set at Kangaroo Point. They'll take the CityCat to get there of course ;-)

"Write what you know" I guess!

Mine is set... somewhere. Not Brisbane I don't think. It's pretty much a throw-together version of Earth by the sounds of things xD Does that help?

I think its still set in Australia though ;-P

I think my novels are set on the Gold Coast, somewhere. There's references in the first book to them being an hour south of Brisbane, and there's a couple of references to them still being in Queensland. So I'd say the town I've set them in is *right* up against the NSW border, and I've moved everything else north a little bit to accommodate.

I didn't want to - but I got convinced to. So much weird stuff happens in my 'verse that setting it in Brisbane makes sense - we're one of the few cities where urban fantasy kind of stuff would get routinely ignored.

It really would, wouldn't it?

Too hot to breathe? "That's just the summer months. It's actually cooler than last year..."
Ground shaking? "Campbell Newman's digging another tunnel. Should be done by 2010."
Weird people running loose in the city? "Performance artists on a Saturday afternoon."

:)

I love Brisbane so much :).

*makes so-so gesture* I've dubbed the town Stoker but the view from Alesandese's is based on a view I would one day like to have -- over looking our "glorious" river and the Southbank area.

Peter Smith, that sounds like the view I had from Dornoch Towers in Highgate Hill when I lived there.

My story is definitely set in Brisbane with specific locations and I even name real politicians and bureaucrats. Since I'm writing memoir, that's entirely appropriate I think.

Nope, although I have made reference to Sydney. I didn't think Interpol agents would be based in Brisbane. O:

At the moment it could be set anywhere, even though I did mention Brisbane, but I have decided to set mine on the Gold Coast up on the mountains.

Funny you should mention that, Brisbane may not be in my 2007 story but will be part of another story, the one that continually bubbles in my mind. Long way from Brisbane now but deeply part of my past. If you want my two cents, Brisbane is part of the fabric that is me so if it is with you too, I think it will come up at some time on paper. Good luck on your 50,000.

Go for that! I lived on the mountains behind the coast and it is a visually and emotionally rich area. And lots of geological history too.
