I can't wait until the Write-In tomorrow night at Borders!
Now that I have my work schedule straightened out, I am trying to hit as many of these write-ins as possible! I know next weekend will be crazy with the holiday.
The one in Cary was lots of fun last night, and even though I think we talked more than we wrote, I think it was overall very productive.
Anyways, hope to see lots of you there tomorrow night!

This will be a very simple question.
When outsiders come in droves to our area, claiming that we are so darn "friendly," (and I ask that as a true native of this area,) why in the freaking world do they so stubbornly insist that all the write-ins be at national chains instead of supporting the local "friendly" establishments that make our area unique??? The national chains have no free internet, no personality, no local color, no history, no charm. Outsiders had those dry, sterile places back where they came from. Some ignoramus from elsewhere wrote on the local forum that she had been a manager someplace, and didn't like people taking up space where she worked... I scoff!! What about the OWNER?? I have spoken to OWNERS, and our friendly OWNERS would have welcomed us, but for the fact that they were never asked by the ML. I'll be glad to include their names and e-mails upon request, starting with Quail Ridge, New World, Third Place and PCJ.
Allow me to inform you, if you are NOT a native, that attendance is certainly low at your gatherings precisely because you have chosen to eschew the local establishments who would have happily welcomed the NaNo people, and no self-respecting native of my town/county/triangle area is thrilled to frequent some sterile chain-store, blissfully unencumbered by the constraints of charm or personality, just to hang out with a bunch of outsiders who have no respect or interest in what's left of the "friendly" place they have chosen to bulldoze. FOR EXAMPLE, I had soooo looked forward to meeting with the great people of my home town, people whom I adore, in a town I love with all my heart, but was most sublimely disappointed to be met with the nauseating reality that I would be forced to either travel to the cookie-cutter village of Cary, or to a ghastly chain-store, or both, if I wanted to participate in an OFFICIAL write-in. I was even informed that I was allowed to have write-ins at the better places, but they would be unofficial because SOMEBODY who schedules the official ones did not want to bother with local businesses.
If what you, as an outsider, want is to clique with your fellow outsiders and never gain an appreciation of the town you invaded because we were "friendly," then y'all go right ahead with your paltry little meetings in the antiseptic environment of your choice, but you will not meet many of the people you choose vehemently to insult by ignoring us. We will continue to write unofficially in our own local haunts, or at home, rather than frequent these charm-free Walmarts of the book&coffee world. They don't even have free wifi, for-the-love-of-God!!!
Piece of advice: when in Rome... and it's no wonder to me any more that the Europeans think Americans are so assenine.

These are unfortunately unofficial and will have no stickers or whatever it is that MLs can use for bribery, but they are in our own town and in our own local establishments with free wifi and better coffee and smoothies than those chain-stores have.

Um... I-I don't think people are doing this for the sake of insulting anyone. >>;;; I mean, I've lived here all of my life (granted, I'm only 16) and I still like the bigger places just fine. I haven't been able to get to any write-ins due to school work, but judging from these forums, the people going there aren't anywhere near that petty and mean-spirited.
Anyways, whatever their role, the MLs are PEOPLE. They aren't perfect, and they aren't available 24/7. They're trying as hard as they can, and I think they're pretty darn good about the whole thing, considering that they have novels to write, lives to live, etc.
In any case, you're kinda letting us down on the "friendly" thing. I mean, you're getting mad at "outsiders" for "excluding" you- don't you feel like there's something wrong with that?

Methinks someone should LAY OFF the coffee....we meet in the easiest locations, as some of us travel a bit farther than others, yes ?
I rarely step foot in a Borders/ B&N/ Waldenbooks. I would rather go to Ed McKays with my fellow tattooed folk and spend 30 bucks for 20 books, you know ? (Not to mention the usually decent music playing in the background)
More bang for the book. Yes, I just punned you. Get over it.

I've been in Raleigh since I was 7 years old, and I still can't write efficiently anywhere except in my room on my computer.
Maybe that's why I'm only at 9k words and there's less than 10 days to go! O_o
Eeek, I'd better get to writing! I wish writing was as much fun as making promotional material for my non-existent novel. I already have a shirt, a banner, an author interview, and a fake book cover. :D
