Saint John Kickoff - Please Read!

[EDIT 2:]

When? Thursday, November 1st at 7pm.
Where? Pizza Hut, Brunswick Square uptown

Come one, come all!

==

[EDIT:]

OKAY! The date is set! We'll be getting together on November 1st.

If you have a preference of time (right now it'll either start at 6pm or later), please let me know ASAP.
Also, if you have a preference of venue (or area of the city - ie: uptown), let me know.

I will keep this thread updated as details are confirmed.

Also: WOOHOO, IT'S ALMOST NOVEMBER!

==

Okay people - we need to figure out when to have our kick-off event.

Two dates that we're kicking around are:

Friday October 26th
Thursday, November 1st

General evening-type times for both, I think. Depending on the kind of response we get (and Mary's availability, since she's the other ML), I think we might have to try to do two small get-togethers.

This is where we need your help! Tell us (here or via email - st_john_nb@nanowrimo.org) if you'd like to meet up with us, and let us know what days/times are best for you. And if you can't make the kick-off, don't worry, we'll try to shake things up a bit so you can get to at least a gathering or two.

It should be noted that there will be A SPECIAL GIFT for all of you who can make it - but please RSVP so Mary and I can make enough for everybody.
<0> Fredericton: A year-round writing group!

Hi everybody! I hope you're recovering from November (and the holidays!) quite nicely and are getting back into the writing groove.

I just wanted to post here to let the Fredericton Wrimos know that there's a great year-round writing group here called Freddy Words. We've got a Facebook group and a posting board (links at the bottom), so please check them out and sign up if you're interested!

Our next meeting is this Friday night (Feb. 15) from 7-8 p.m. We have a writing assignment if you want to participate, reflecting on "Winter in Fredericton" (any style of writing; one page in length).

Afterward we'll have a meet-n-greet/party. Guests welcome, just please RSVP with numbers (which you have to do anyway to get the address!) BYOB and bring a snack to share! You can also bring a one-page writing sample if you want, which will be displayed at the party and will hopefully spark discussion and act as an ice-breaker! RSVP to soleta@thecatsweb.com. I hope to see you there!

If you can't attend the party but want to officially join the group (and be informed of future meetings), please let me know at soleta@thecatsweb.com and I'll hook you up! Membership is completely free, of course.

Freddy Words Facebook group: http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=7913111597
Saint John - TGI-so-totally-O party?

Hi folks!

I apologize for basically dropping off the face of the earth this end-of-November and beginning-of-December. A swath of papers and essays and general woe-is-me-type gloom devoured me. Today I am crawling out from underneath my rock and trying to remember how to perform basic functions like eating and wiggling my eyebrows one at a time.

Anyway! I'm certain that I'm not alone in feeling overwhelmed, seeing as how it's That Time of Year. This is why I am proposing a general get-together some time in early January. Something relaxing so we can recuperate from the season and spark the imagination all at once.

If you are at all interested in this, please just reply and say, "yup!" I would love to see all of you again, and I think we will have a super-awesome time.

(And if you have a house or apartment where we could HOST this thing, email me. Please. I will love you forever, and absolutely offer myself up as your personal house-cleaning slave for the day, including after-party clean-up.)

Happy End of December, Novelists!

Saint John - Checking in & TGIO party

Howdy doody folks!

It's been a couple of weeks since I last emailed with y'all. How are you? How are those pesky novels coming (unless, like the less sane among us, you've already finished)?

I will admit, I crossed the finish line about a week ago - though the race is far from over for me, let me tell you. I have about 10K of polished, well-written ESSAYS to write before the month is out. EEK. As a matter of fact, as soon as this email is finished I'm putting my nose to the grindstone again. So while the novel is done, I am still wholly with you in the deadline-ridden spirit of the NaNo season.

It may be a little late to have another "write in," but how about a TGIO party? And don't you dare think that NOT hitting 50K is any excuse not to go. If you wrote ONE SINGLE SOLITARY WORD in the course of this month, you are welcomed - nay, implored to come.

So let me know what days and times in early December are good for you. Mary, my co-ML, will probably only be available on weekends, so a Saturday night or Sunday afternoon might be a good option. If this works for you, great; if not, tell me when you can make it, and I'll do my best to work around you.

Take heart, fellow NaNoWri-mians! The end is near - and I mean that in as non-apocalyptic a way as possible.

- Cass, off to write about gender-switching, Frankenstein, and Shakespearean royalty
250,000 words from Moncton... and counting?

Once again the Gracie family has committed to writing five 50,000 word novels in November.

We were all successful last year. Will any Monctonians join us to make this a half a million word year?

A million word year?

We could sure use the company. :-)

I hope your month is off to a flying start, and that the sweet, sweet muses are whispering delectable nothings in your ears. If you haven't gotten off to a great start, however, I have these words of advice for you:

DON'T PANIC.

The month is young yet, and your imagination is a hearty breeding ground for amazing, fun, and mercifully long-winded passages about whatever your heart desires. If you find yourself stuck, drop the scene where it stands and start with something else. Noodle for a paragraph or two about a minor character's troubled relationship with his hamster, Percival. Have the power go out wherever your characters are. (Or have your Fantasy characters' fire go out mysteriously or something.) The weather is yours to command: use it to your god-like advantage.

Now, on to business.

This Wednesday, November 14th, at 6pm, there will be a write-in and games night for Saint John wrimos. Let's get together at Tim Horton's on King Street. THE VENUE MAY CHANGE, so please RSVP if you'd like to attend. I will send out another email closer to the date to remind everyone, and let y'all know of any changes.

I will probably be able to pick some people up if transportation is an issue, so don't be shy.

I hope to see lots of you there. Take care, and write on!

- Cass
ML, Saint John; Destroyer of worlds, Wearer of pants.
Let's get this started!

Until the regular boards are back up and running, some questions for our very big and varied region to discuss:

- Is this your first year doing NaNoWriMo? If not, how many years have you participated/won?
- How did you first hear about NaNoWriMo?
- Where are you located? Do you plan to attend any in-person events (kick-off party, write-ins)?
- Do you have a story idea yet? What genre does it fall under?
- Will you write an outline (or do any other prep work) for your story, or will you figure out the plot as you write?
- Do you write regularly in months other than November?
- Do you have any questions or concerns about NaNoWriMo?

For me: I'm Soleta, co-ML for Fredericton. It's my second year doing NaNoWriMo, and I won last year. I have been trying to get into a regular habit of writing, and last year NaNoWriMo was a great way to kickstart a manuscript. I haven't kept up the writing as much as I'd hoped, but my aim this year with NaNo is going to be to try to integrate writing more into my life on a regular basis. I have a story idea for this year, and hope to take some time this month to work on an outline.

My biggest frustration last year was that, while I wrote a lot of words (100k, actually), I didn't finish the story - and it remains unfinished. So my aim this year is to finish my story in 50k (even if that means skimming over scenes or outlining chapters). As Chris Baty says in No Plot, No Problem: it's much easier to go back and fill in holes than it is to finish a story! My genre would be "other genres", as it's a melange of things, including memoir. (My topic last year was memoir.)

I hope to hear from you guys! This board has been a little quiet. Us East Coasters need to represent! XD
Halfway point!

The ends of my fingers feel kinda numb from hitting keys for so long, but I made it to the halfway point today!

Now I have plenty of time to slack off and watch some TV and make Christmas and Yule presents without worrying about falling behind the way I've done just about every other year I've done NaNo.

Anyone else at that delicious halfway point yet?

It's almost that time again! I love October. October is almost November. I keep getting that tingling feeling in my fingers, and I'm pretty sure a swarm of butterflies are performing synchronized dance routines somewhere in my upper intestinal area.

Inspirational Quotes

I love collecting writing-related inspirational quotes. They're great for motivation when you start getting psyched out by your very challenging (but surmountable!) goal. I'll post new quotes in this thread regularly throughout the rest of October and November. Feel free to add your own, but remember to keep it clean (no curse words or sexual content), since this is an all-ages forum.

To start:

"A great deal of talent is lost to the world for want of a little courage. Every day sends to their graves obscure men whose timidity prevented them from making a first effort."

How & Why to Affiliate with Various Regions and set New Brunswick as your Home Region

If you haven't set New Brunswick as your 'home' region yet, or if you know any NB participants who haven't set NB as their home region, this tutorial will walk you through the process.

Teaser:

Why Affiliate? Why Do I Need a Nano Home?
Well, the absolute answer to both of these questions is that you don't. Honestly, you can join, write, and win without ever doing either of these things. But if you do, your region will thank you - your word count will be included in the total word count for your region and reflect the amazing productivity of your Home. Affiliating also helps your local Municipal Liaison locate and serve you better with assistance, encouragement, and companionship. Trust me, if you are going to write 50,000 words in thirty days, you will need healthy doses of all three!

Magna Carta II

Okay, now for the second part of our writing exercise, Magna Carta II!

Now we need to make a list of all the things we hate in a novel.

My list:
- graphic and explicit sex scenes
- long essays describing social injustices (yes I'm looking at you Victor Hugo!)
- pages and pages of intricate and detailed description (that's you Tolkien!)
- bad guys that have no reason behind what they're doing
- stories that don't really come to a conclusion

I have a stack of posters provided by the lovely Solita to give out to people to put up around Fredericton. If you would like any, even if they are just to put up in your room, please send me a note or leave me a message on this thread.

Organization

How much preplanning and outlining are you "Oldtimers" doing? How much is ok?

Does anyone have a favourite way to organize their work? (ie. Snowflake, index cards etc.?)

I am curious how many are planners and how many are seat-of-your-pants writers?

Magna Carta I

Hi guys and girls. It's time to get warmed up for our challenge next month.

Let's start things off with our Magna Carta.

Create a list of all the things you like and enjoy in a novel. We will be making another list of things you don't like in our next exercise.

For example, things that I like in a novel are:
- cats cats and more cats
- high adventure and fairy tales.
- Magic that takes place in every day worlds
- sensible people.
- Plot driven stories.
- Airplane novels.

Feel free to post your list here.

Susan
