Are you listening to any particular music to inspire you while you write? Or is the sound of clacking keys enough? What are you using as your inspiration as you weave your novel this year?

As for me, I've found that bands such as Dead Can Dance, Enigma, and Eyna are doing well to inspire my scenes about my protagonist who has run away with a unique but sort of scary freakshow circus. Dead Can Dance even has a song on Labyrinth called "The Carnival is Over" which is perfect to set the mood.

I like to go to http://www.pandora.com , type in a good techno band, and let it find me some random electric motivational music.
Seems to work pretty well. =-P

I have started listening to Ambient and Chillout internet stations. The haunting music goes well with a 200 years post nuclear apocalypse forest.

Emo music. Most specifically, high energy emo music - The Spill Canvas, Jack's Mannequin, Chiodos, PARAMORE, and ENVY ON THE COAST! (Chiodos and Jack's Mannequin are almost opposites...hahaha!)

Ooo, Regina Spektor would be good for my plot.

When I'm being a good girl and writing without the internet on, I listen to the soundtracks from Stardust and Batman Begins. Lots of variety for slow stuff and action.

When I have the internet on, I get into Pandora and listen to Eva Cassidy, Within Temptation, Evanescence, and other stuff. And sometimes I listen to country because my story takes place in Kansas, and every other radio station in Kansas is a country station.

Normally I don't listen to anything except the clacking of the keys as I type (I love that sound!)- not to mention I have a weird obsession with silence- it helps me listen better to the story. Or maybe it lets me get out of the way. When I listen to music, I focus on that.

But last night, in order to drowned out the sounds of "Blazing Saddles" from my brother upstairs, I ended up listening to some great Japanese flute music played by James Galway (The Enchanted Forest). Sometimes haunting and sometimes playful, the instrumental music is a great backdrop for my fantasy setting!

I'm also writing fantasy, so I listen to Lord of the Rings, Enya, and a couple Japanese Pop songs for added flavor.

Music is, for me, a sort of barrier to the external world. I don't always listen to the words or even the music sometimes. But it helps create a metal wall around me so that I don't get distracted.

I actually find it more difficult if I'm listening to something specific. I like the TV in the background, but I have a problem on Sundays and Mondays. When football is on, I tend to push the chair back and peek at the game. Then I find myself talking, cheering and yelling at the TV, regardless of the teams. Then I find myself apologising to my hubby for sounding like I know what I'm talking about (he always laughs at that point and says I understand more than he does!) then I meekly return to the computer.

I listen to stuff i cant really sing along with...like Japanese rock, scream, grindcore, etc. But then i feel like dancing haha =P. But if i have complete silence it's impossible for me to write. My mind wanders in different directions if it's too quiet.

I've been listening to a variety of music from the iPod and last FM, but my two favorites this month have been In Rainbows by Radiohead and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga by Spoon. Both have been great background for me.

I tried something new...my son listens to what he calls 'J-Urban', which to me sounds like a combination of jazz, hip-hop, swing and rock. The artist (group) he listens to is called M-Flo? I listened to their Cosmicolor CD and their Beat Space Nine CD. Really liked the Beat Space Nine, Cosmicolor was a little distracting.

I have been listening to Elvis Greatest Hits as my story is set in the 1950's Memphis Time frame.

I have to add to this forum once again, because the soundtrack of my second novel greatly differred from that of my first novel (at least, mostly).

I listened to AFI, Evanescence, and Chiodos. And that was about it. It was all dark, angsty type stuff, and it REALLY helped my creative juices flow out to be listening to some things so fitting. I seriously could not have written this one half as fast if I'd been listening to Jack's Mannequin, though I love the music.
